    Walking along the shoreline
    Danielle R.

I came here with my oldest son who is 1 1/2 for a little change of scenery with hopes of being somewhere that I felt safe to be on my own with him near water and this was the absolute perfect spot. We came on a Monday morning and easily found street parking. Walking to the beach was easy as there are sidewalks and pathways in multiple spots that head right to the water. We got to the beach and I was happy to see that there weren't too many people there and the people who were, were families with their kids as well. I felt safe as a mom on my own here and I felt safe being here during COVID as everyone was able to be spaced out and safe. The beach is fairly small so it was nice that it wasn't packed. It also meant it was fairly quiet which was peaceful. The water in this area is very calm which makes me happy and I didn't have to worry as much about my son being at the shore. I was with him at all times but sometimes it only takes one wave to wipe you out and it can be quick so to be somewhere with calm water and a child under 2 is comforting. This is a very residential area and there are houses right on the beach so please be respectful!!! I did not see any restrooms in the area so if you are with a little who can't hold it or won't go in the water, I would think twice about this specific spot. To eat you would need to fully leave the beach and find a spot in Point Loma or pack a lunch. Overall, this is the perfect place for my family. I have 2 under 2 and would feel comfortable being here as the 4 of us and I feel comfortable being here on my own with my son. I look forward to another trip here.

Can't believe I've lived in SD my whole life and never knew about this beach. Cute (small) beach on the bay. I made the mistake of going on Labor Day weekend but still really enjoyed my time! Nice sand area to lay out, calm waters to float in. Beautiful view!! Great for small kiddos who aren't ready for the beach waves yet.

Great little beach! I love how empty it is during winter months and how the locals all bring their dogs and let them off leash. The vibes here are always friendly and kind! One of my favorite hidden gems in SD.

I am revising this because I can see locals are pissed things are getting crowded down here. What is worse? The derelicts of Ocean Beach have discovered it. Which means drunks, beer bottles on the sand, nasty chicks, loose dogs, dog poop and idiots galore. Yes it is scenic but parking is limited. Meter carts come around and ticket your car but they are mainly after scofflaws from the nearby sub base. Both my kids grew up playing and swimming down there. The water is usually a degree or two warmer than the ocean and waves gently lap at the shore. But be warned--no public restrooms! It is always a treat when a big cruise ship or Navy Aircraft Carrier goes sailing right by and the rocks and rip-rap are a discovery paradise with crabs, mussels, and the occasional octopus! Those rocks keep the kids entertained for hours and we always put back gently whatever creatures he was barely able to catch. But they can be slippery! Being that this is Point Loma, some locals are cool. But many nearby residents and property owners feel a desperate sense of entitlement to use this beach as their private dog run. There are pieces of feces around and all of a sudden loose dogs will appear out of nowhere---unleashed and running a muck. Parents of young children--BEWARE! These people pay a lot of taxes to live down here and they feel above the law--these no-clue dog owners are the worse. Now I have heard that Animal Control is cracking down due to many complaints about unleashed dogs & I say it's about time! Bring your loose dog down & even if you are rich, it's citation time. Also, don't expect the Harbor Police to help you out over here. Their time is better spent at the Airport and they tell you when you call for assistance, that they are always "under-staffed." They are pretty much useless most of the time. Keep that in mind, if you plan a day at the beach. The Harbor Police do not consider this area a high enforcement priority. You are on your own down here. All together I would ask that Yelpers not invite themselves down here if they plan to drink, cavort with loose dogs (canine or otherwise) or cause problems. Hello OB paddle-boarders: NO DRINKING BOOZE ON THE BEACH! Hello stripper from OB with big dog and rich residents: LEASH LAWS! It is a family environment and the locals and regulars are particularly territorial. If you are NOT an idiot and wish to check it out, come on down. It's really a wonderful and very relaxing place to unwind! Providing you are cool.

Beautiful place for a walk, especially at sunrise or sunset - I don't come here often enough, but whenever I do, I think - wow, this is gorgeous! Amazing views of the sailboats, downtown, Shelter Island, and Point Loma. Lots of teenagers taking a romantic walk w/ their special someone, older couples, people walking their dogs, and families w/ kids. I was with 2 kids and a puppy who were running on the beach, slipping in the mud, fetching balls in the water (the kids, not the puppy - he didn't want to get more than his paws wet). This has got to be one of the top 10 beautiful, quintessential San Diego spots.

This is my family go to beach. We have a toddlers that is very active and this beach is perfect for her. There aren't huge waves or crazy amounts of people. I love that it's dog friendly and there are always other children there. We spent last Fourth of July there and saw 4 different firework shows. You can't beat this beach.

This beach sucks. The sand is too hard and rocky and water is oily from all the boats, it's gross!

Small, crowded, no parking, lots of dog poop. If you're looking for a waveless beach, the Mission Bay beaches are much better.

That moment honestly made me decide the park was a must-visit. I ended up stopping by afterward just to walk around, release some stress, and enjoy the calm energy. I even found myself just sitting in a tree, hugging two or a few, and taking in the quiet; especially in the Trees for Health Garden, which felt fitting for the whole experience. It was a simple but meaningful stop that added a peaceful pause to the end of the trip before heading back to the airport. I even met a squirrel that I chat with; I named him James. While I was chatting with him, he even place his paw on his chest as if he was asking me "are you speaking to me?" It felt great speaking to my own little grandma Willow tree moment.

Now in my 50s, I go less now -- maybe once a year, but on a recent visit we enjoyed a nice long walk from end-to-end and back and were lucky enough to catch some spectacular marine life in the tide pools near the pier. LOTS TO EXPLORE On one end of the beach, you will find the Marine Room restaurant and La Jolla Beach and Tennis club, along with mansions on the cliff edge, while kayakers from nearby tour and rental shops get safety briefings and enter the water. At the other end, you'll find Scripps Pier, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and if you're there at the right time, numerous tide pools with bright orange starfish and sea anemone. In between, you'll find grassy Kellogg Park, a tot lot, showers and restrooms, sinks and hand dryers. LOCALS AND TOURISTS The beach is about a mile long and comfortably deep in low tide. It attracts an international crowd, families, couples, surfers, teenagers, lovers, sun-worshipers, surfers, joggers, strollers, you name it. WHAT WOULD MAKE IT 5 STARS? There's a limited parking lot immediately adjacent to the beachfront, but I usually have to find parking on the street, not an easy task in peak season. As with all beaches in San Diego, it lacks vendors along the beach, so if you need a shop or get hungry or thirsty, either bring your own or seek out one of the clothing stores, restaurants or cafes along nearby Avenida de la Playa. La Jolla Shores is one of San Diego's nicest beaches in my opinion. Helpful?

I wanted to be in this area but knew that the parking down by Torrey Pines Beach can sometimes be a hit or miss so I looked on the map and found Black's Beach trailhead and took a gamble. I had about 2 hours before it was going to rain, so this trail seemed doable in the time I had. I parked at the farther end of the gravel lot, not many cars parked here. And where I saw the danger sign, I started my hike down. It was a little steep going down, and if it was a wet day, I wouldn't venture down this path. Wear sturdy shoes, but I can tell you the views are so worth doing this short, steep hike down and back up. Once you get down to the beach, its just endless sand and beach and just gorgeous. I wish I had had more time to spend here, Ill definitely come back on a summer's day. I really enjoyed randomly discovering this trail, its about 45min down and up, definitely worth it for the views!
