At $4.50 a piece I consider this a luxury for us. I found a close stall in the parking structure. A very cheerful polite male employee took my order. I had seen two occupied tables as I walked into the shop. Both had matcha drinks. Why not? I asked the young man assisting me, what's the best matcha drink? He said his favorite was banana matcha with extra banana foam. Okay I'll try it. He repeated it to the cashier. So popular there was a wait for beverages to be prepared. Soon enough mine was ready. I think Doc would enjoy this drink. This shop is a working bakery. Many yummy pastries displayed. Menu is posted high up above to choose from. Rather tiny shop with room for customers to stand in line to order and wait for drinks. Clean, busy with a few tables and chairs outside but pretty much in direct sun.

It was crazy but the service was fairly quick (25 minutes), considering the crowd. The place is small and just for placing orders! There's no place to dine-in. Orders are placed inside and picked out outside from the pickup window.

There was a line but it moved quickly. The malasadas were fluffy and chewy with a slightly crisp exterior. They're about the size of your palm. Huge plus that they come out fresh and warm- definitely the best way to eat them!

I highly recommend this place. It was definitely worth the drive! Don't forget if you like the mustard dipping sauce you'll have to ask. Cost is .25 or .50 cents. I'm not sure exactly how this dipping sauce is made but it was a perfect mixture.

Since it was their anniversary on Sunday, also got their celebratory funfetti cupcake which also like their baked goods did not disappoint. The croissant base of many of their pastries is flaky. When fresh it crunches with every bite that you take. This time around we had the cinnamon roll, mango danish which had a chocolate mochi filling, and their char siu bun. It's such a neat take to have char siu in a croissant. We are used to having it in the doughy bao bread but in a croissant, savory with a crunchy outside tastes so much better. I love sweet but this one wasn't overly sweet, who would have thought that mango and chocolate pair so well together. It's the summer months, fresh mango on pastries. It was the perfect ripeness. For the cinnamon roll, you honestly cannot forget get their cinnamon roll...It's flaky and again the frosting is not overly sweet. Can't wait to get another box of their pastries again soon.

We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Throw some of the accompanying lilikoi jam on it, and you're set brah. Ordered the following: - Pork belly, fried rice and eggs - 7.5/10: bomb stuff, as expected. Heavy breakfast for sure. Pork belly strips are tender and very flavorful. They skimp out on the garlic fried rice though. Just one little scoop. And it wasn't too garlicky at all. They have a killer bakery too right up front, so make sure you check that out as well. A great time was had by all.

Green Tea Puff ($3.75) and Coco Puff ($3.69) - I didn't like these. The chantilly topping was way too sweet. Pudding filling tastes cheap.

I picked out two bags of cookies: Oatmeal Raisin ($11.50 per bag) and a bag of imperfect cookies which slightly less expensive ($8.50 per bag). The imperfect cookies were chocolate chip cookies. They are nice and crunchy, sweet and very small chocolate chips so you don't really taste them. The oatmeal cookies were thin, crunchy and sweet. I couldn't really taste the oatmeal. I liked the crunchiness and sweetness of both cookies. If you like thin and crunchy cookies, The Cookie Lady is definitely a cookie shop you will want to try.

These are packaged so nicely that I'm going to include them in the Christmas gift bags I give out for the holidays to some well deserving friends. Each bag was only $8 at their factory (was $8.50 at the center). I've seen them for sale at Don Quixote for $10.50 a bag, so I feel like I got a bargain. On top of that, they gave me a great little reuseable shopping bag in which to carry my purchase. At the factory, you can see them making batches of these wonderful treats. They were kind enough to let me take pictures of them at work. The yummy smells floated through the air. Along with the bags I purchased, the young lady threw in a bunch of different flavor sample packages, too. Maybe this will help me decide which flavors of these amazing semi-sweet snacks I'll purchase next time! Yummy!!

Instead of using yeast, this rice cake is made using a perpetual mother starter. Think sour dough bread or yogurt. Natural fermentation results in the honeycomb like structure, fermented umami notes and gentle sour taste that balances the sweetness. Even if you haven't had the rice cake here, chances are high you've eaten them. They are sold at a myriad of places most notably Chun Wah Kam. Don't believe? Go to Chinatown at 6am and watch cargo vans double park to pick up boxes of them. Excessive trivia - there was a Lin Fong Company founded in 1924 that lasted until the early 2000's on the next block. Part raw ingredient grocery store, part apothecary, part bakery. Upon their closure, the owners of New Lin Fong Bakery acquired the original recipe and continued making the authentic rice cakes. Yes, they still offer their outstanding, aromatic, crumbly lard based almond cookies and raw sugar flavored tea cookies. Unfortunately, they no longer make bao buns. Part of Hawaii's Chinese cultural culinary history. A must for seekers of the authentic.

The crust wasn't flaky enough, kinda dense. And the custard part should be smoother but it's quite thick and clumpy. Also didn't have much egg flavor. I was hoping to like it because I love Portuguese egg tart and grew up eating it in Macao but ended up disappointed especially for the price I paid. The folks were very nice though. The cashier was friendly and the guy grabbing the pastries for us took the time to explain the different flavors. Maybe their take on pastel de nata was just not quite what I expected.
