I don't think a description of pizza does Le Monge justice, as the restaurant is much nicer than simply pizza, and they have lots of other options to try as well (including traditional French). For dinner I selected a small side salad and the campagna pizza which was delicious! It was larger than a lot of the portions I had seen in France before, and certainly large enough to share between two people. It had several kinds of cheese along with prosciutto. The combination of cheeses makes the pizza quite rich and creamy. My husband had the menu selection (which came with an appetizer of 6 escargot, beef bourguignon, and fruits for dessert). He enjoyed his selection as well. I would definitely stop in Le Monge for a meal and expect friendly servers, quick service and great food.

The internal mood is very casual, with a classical Napoli wood-fired pizza in the background, open bar and a large seating hall with regulars exchanging jokes with the staff and the owner, in a very relaxed Mediterranean fashion. The food follows suit. The pasta we ordered were extremely rich - to the point we actually needed bread to be able to eat the pasta, given how rich it ended up being - and in a good way. They also have an excellent wines selection - including from the surrounding Burgundy region, however we unfortunately did not have an opportunity to sample due to having to drive afterwards. Overall, it's an excellent spot I am looking forwards to have an occasion to return.

An excellent thing is that they had sandwiches outside usual dining hours, which we absolutely used. It's a nice and calm location with a terrace on the town square and just next to the Savigny-les-Beaune castle. The sandwitches were excellent, we could park our bikes just next to our table and the wines by the glass they had were an excellent discovery as well. Seriously, it was like a guy with a castle ran around to yard sales both expensive and cheap, bought all the offerings, and stuffed them in and around his domain. So, we walked here. It's about 40 feet from the chateau gates, so if you can't find it then you have a tremendous problem with navigation. We read the menu and it looked perfect, so I was prepared for them to tell me they weren't serving food. As any visitor to France soon learns, sometimes restaurants that are supposed to be open are closed. Or, sometimes restaurants that are open are indeed open but unwilling to serve you food for random French reasons. It's something you have to grudgingly accept if you want to enjoy your travels. Delightfully for us, the restaurant was actually open and receptive to the concept of seven humans, American and Irish, sitting down and eating their food. They have a lovely outdoor patio, but it was during a heat wave and there was not a chance in hell we'd be sitting outside. Indoors was quaint, comfortable, and didn't have the stupid sun beating down on us. If memory serves, we were limited to the pizza menu at that hour of the afternoon. Not a problem, as we were all quite hungry from walking around the chateau going, "What the hell is this?" for two hours. We ordered a variety of their pizzas -- from the traditional Margarita, to fancier types like my Paysanne (sauce, cheese, ham, bacon, onion, cream). You can see the full menu on their website, which was originally designed in 1999 (I checked the source code). I tried some of their local beers, which were quite nice, and a welcome break from the gallons of Burgundy we'd been consuming. Service was remarkably normal. We didn't feel rushed, but we also didn't feel like the waitress had boarded a boat for Antarctica. As a veteran of 3-hour French lunches, I appreciated this. All-in-all, a very nice experience, and definitely worth a try after you visit the castle that finally convinced my wife that she doesn't want to live in a castle.

Beware if you are not a French speaking local. Dp youself a favor and avoid the restaurant. While…read morethe host is very nice the entrees served to tourists differ from the same ones served to the locals. For example our fish of the day looked and tasted like scraps of fish left from the prior week's specials while quite a few tables around us were enjoying a perfectly done white fillets- of course all of them were local guests of the restaurant. So, if you dont want to feel that someone is taking advantage of you or mocking you for not speaking the language please avoid this restaurant. That said i do admit we dont speak French for which my sincerest apology- frankly it is quite hard but of course not entirely impossible to speak every language of every country one travels to. That, however, is no excuse for abuse.
