I can't overstate how awesome it is to have an eye exam that is separate to the sales process for lenses and glasses. It was such a breath of fresh air to get good advice from someone who is paid the same whether I just get the eye exam or decide to go on and buy lots of products - elsewhere. Most optometrists tell you that you need lenses, a pair of glasses for day use, one for driving, another for night use, and have you considered these expensive add ons, that we'll pitch as essential to you but they really make no difference except to our bottom line. Overall, great experience! It has been difficult for me to find an optometrist. Most places sell me what they want and get irritated because I take longer than usual for the exams. I've been to KDT optometry for the past few years now. I think Dr.Truong is great! You don't need a sams club card to see Dr.Truong. I made an appointment for myself and there was little wait time. It is a tiny office with one examination room. It's clean and well kept. The entire appointment took like 15-20mins. I got glasses and contacts and my interaction with Dr. Truong was great! You can also go outside to Sams optical to get glasses or contacts as well. You don't have to be a member either which is nice! I usually get my contacts there and order glasses elsewhere. Also, if you forget your prescription or lost it. You can call up Dr. Truong office and they can provide you with that information! I misplace my prescription paper before and I wanted to buy another pair of glasses online. I was able to call and got my prescription right away! I highly recommend Dr. Truong. Mr. Magoo doesn't have shit on me! Without contacts I'm about as useless as a no legged man in an ass kicking contest, so when I was down to my last pair of lenses an eye exam was needed stat. Dr. Truong was just the man to come to my rescue. Same day service I was able to get in 2 hours after I initially called, and an hour after that I had a fresh prescription that was a better fit than what I came in with. Sure it was in a Sam's Club and a little off the beaten path for me, but totally worth it in terms of price, quickness, and accessibility. Doc Truong pays it forward to his customers being able to charge less due to the fact that he leases a small office out of the warehouse. That paired with the fact that lenses are wholesale, and it was a much cheaper outing than any I've ever experienced. My vision insurance is not the greatest and it pisses me off to pay a lot out of pocket just to be able to see. If you feel my pain go to Dr. Truong and it will ease the blow a little bit. read more

I was a little hesitant on going since I was lectured by my last eye doctor. I almost felt like a child being scolded by my parents. I've been wearing glasses since the second grade when, upon being transferred to a new classroom, my teacher asked me if I could see the board. She consequently asked me that question and moved my seat up a row until, seated in the first row, I squinted and said I could make do. I went home with a note around my neck that day, alerting my Mum to the fact that I needed an eye exam, pronto. In the summer after sixth grade, my parents agreed to let me get contact lenses and I was liberated from the ginormous, round, plastic frames that made me look like a fugly Chicken Little throughout elementary school. Since then I don't think I've ever visited the same eye doctor twice. I have been completely apathetic about offices, my only consideration being cost. Previous optometrists comprise a sea of faceless folks in white lab coats who ask me, "Is 1 better? Or 2? 1? Or 2? The same?" End of story. Fast forward to the present. I'm a member of Sam's Club. I had been suffering more frequent headaches and knew that an eye exam was in order. I browsed the frames selection at a time when the optometry office and adjacent shop were closed. I was happily surprised by the perfect pair of red, Elizabeth Arden frames that I zeroed in on right away. (We've come a long way from 1984's tortoiseshell disaster.) I returned on a day when the doctor was in as a walk-in. The office's very sweet receptionist helped me to wheel my huge Sam's Club cart into the waiting area and assured me that it was okay. I waited very briefly and then - I encountered the optometry wonder that is Dr. Truong. As Sarah V. so rightly advised, he is FABULOUS. He was incredibly charming and friendly during my exam, playing very good music on his laptop - which led to our discovering a shared appreciation of The Cocteau Twins. When my insurance proved fussy, Dr. Truong personally checked several possibilities on the computer and via telephone before we concluded that there was a hang up on my insurer's end. I can't convey just how sweet, efficient and likable Dr. Truong is. Two weeks later, I had to visit an urgent care with a scratch on my eye (unrelated to my visit!!!). Following urgent care, I popped into KDT a few days later because I wanted his opinion re my eye. Dr. Truong took a quick look as a courtesy. He was once again so kind. Then one of my doxies struck like the small, short legged catastrophe she can sometimes be. She ate my dropper bottle of medication and the urgent care would not refill my prescription. They were really bad news and were advising that the doctor was not in but that regardless, I would have to visit them again and pay another co-pay before the doctor would re-issue my eye drop RX. I called Dr. Truong for help and because he had seen me post-urgent care, was willing to call a new RX into Rite Aid. Just like the Superman of Optometry, he saved the day. He's wonderful. If you are wondering about KDT or are interested in finding an eye doctor with whom you can begin a health partnership, do yourself a very big favor and make an appointment to see Dr. Truong. NO appointment or membership required!!! I'm the person who sleeps in my contacts for months at a time, and knew I was due to spend some time in glasses. Dr. Truong was able to see me the minute I walked in, and didn't lecture me about my poor contact conduct even though we BOTH KNEW what I'd been doing. I feel like I was in and out of there in less than an hour, and we were able to do all those handy little tests that measure eye pressue, peripheral, etc. He also gave me contact and glasses prescriptions, and kindly suggested I take a look at some glasses. This was my first eye doctor in San Diego. I was recommended through the San Diego Reader because they had a special for an eye exam and my company didn't offer vision insurance. It was really worth the drive to Lemon Grove because of the deal I was getting on the exam. Dr. Truong's office is inside the Sam's Club, but it's clean and equipped and he has everything a commercialized optometrist has. I live in PB and still drove out there because it was only $89 initially. They also use 1800 contacts so I just kept ordering my lenses online as needed. The second time I went I still didn't have insurance, but my appointment was only $114 and I always leave with samples. I would recommend visiting Dr. Truong. He's nice and honest. read more

Simply amazing. Dr. Truong was great and very helpful with my first experience of getting contacts. He was very detailed and explained the ins and outs of contacts. For example, did you know some people have different powers for their glasses and contacts? It's because of the vertex distance. I never knew that, and I appreciate Dr. Truong for explaining it to me. Because Dr. Truong is located in Sam's Club, he is able to get his customer's great prices and deals on contact lenses. So if you are a student, definitely check him out. Also, if you are worried about whether or not your insurance is covered, give him a call! I wasn't too sure, but after calling Dr. Truong, he listed the information I'd need to provide him in order for him to check whether or not my insurance would cover the tests. He is very knowledgeable and talkative and its a nice change from the boring random optometrists I would use in the past. He always makes an extra effort to ensure every patient gets the services they want at the lowest price possible, through their insurance or otherwise. Although the office has never been crowded (typically just one or two other patients), I have seen him connect with every person who comes in, whether they are a parent, child, senior citizen, college student, etc. I appreciate that he is always up-to-date on new developments in the field of optometry, which really shows his passion for the profession and care for his patients' health. Lastly, scheduling is always easy because he welcomes walk-ins and same-day appointments, and is open altered hours from typical medical offices. I came into this office letting Dr.Khoa know my major concerns about a possible change in my prescription for my eyesight and scarring in my eyes. My sight believe it or not has not changed and the scars in my eyes are pretty bad but as long as I wear sunglasses when I go outside or drive it should be fine. I am very satisfied with my doctors visit today and would recommend this location to everyone. He is very affordable and informative! I had my first eye doctor appt in many moons last week with Dr. T who is located right there in Sam's Club, and when I was done he walked me over to the optometry dept right next door. Since I didn't want to go the lame eye doctor that my husband was stuck doing business with, I naturally yelped and found the wonderful Dr. Troung. He is a young, cool dude with a friendly, customer service oriented attitude and he is def a one many show, so come with a bit of time to spare. The first time I came in, I wasn't able to see him because of a snafu with my insurance but he kindly told me to please come back once I had everything straightened out. A few days after the first visit, I called, got another appt that week and in I went. He is thorough, professional and just generally a nice guy who happens to be super educated (UC Berkley.) I posted my experience on facebook and I hope my SD friends and family will take advantage of the good doctor and his awesome prices. After my eye exam was done he walked me over to the eyeglass dept next door and left me in the very capable hands of Miss Josie. Miss Josie has very obviously been trained in customer service. She was beyond friendly and helpful and this will be the ONLY place I ever go to get my glasses. Btw, the prices are beyond crazy good and the selection is more than adequate. In a stretch of two months Khoa and I put together two huge events for the community, a Blood Drive in Fashion Valley, and a Vision Care event at Bayside Community Center. First Yelp review. First time seeing an optometrist. He was friendly and high energy yes. However, I felt the whole procedure was very rushed. He was actually TELLING me which lens should look better as he quickly flipped through different ones on the machine. I had to ask him to slow down so i could try to focus on them and tell him if it was really more clearer than the last lens or not. He was also pretty quick to cut off my questions and move on to the next thing, not a very good listener, but ok, there were a few people in the office waiting and he was trying to get to everybody quickly, still... these are my eyes we're talking about and i'd like to make sure we're doing it right, ok? And yes, i can confirm with the previous poster Ka S. that he does indeed promote this Protandim drug. Had a video on his laptop we all had to watch in the waiting room. An obvious up-sell side business, but i agree with Ka, that was not what we were here for. I heard him spend more time with the patient before me on that drug than he did with my eyes.. NOT cool. Not a bad guy, not exactly "sleazy" as Ka put it, but i don't even know what the hell my vision is? He never told me or wrote it down, or told me if one eye is worse than the other... am i 20/40? 20/60? 20/80? 40/40? I mean, i went to an eye doctor to get a prescription for glasses cuz i know my vision is blurry, yet i left not knowing how blurry, but i know about his miracle drug.... again, not cool. I have been visiting optometrists for over 15 years and I have never had such a great experience. Dr. Truong is young, passionate, professional and full of energy. The moment I walked into his office I felt welcomed and privileged to be there. I could tell Dr. Truong truly cared not only about my eyes, but my entire experience. To top it off, the prices are unbeatable. This office is located inside of a Sam's Club, but you are NOT required to have a Sam's Club membership.
