When I was starting to like R&B and Rap music KDON was my favorite radio station and almost every day I used to love hearing the new singles from my favorite artist's upcoming albums and learn when new albums would debut on the music store shelves back on the day and you could say that KDON made me choose to buy that new artist's album or buying the newest album from whatever artist KDON played. I'm surprised that KDON is still surviving and it still ranks as the #1 R&B radio station in Salinas and you can see why they still are #1. When Wild 94.9 or 106 KMEL gets too repetitive for you, 102.5 KDON is always a nice option to press on your radio presets. It actually plays a similar format as Wild, mostly mainstream hip hop and R&B, with a little Latin flair mixed in, but the DJ's seem less obnoxious, and you have more of the small town feel. It is less commercialized, and they don't repeat the same songs over and over again, throwing in a few old school classics here and there. The best thing is that signal carries on for miles and miles. As far as the Bay Area is concerned, it is obviously strongest in the South Bay, with its closer proximity to Salinas, but even up in the northern stretches of the East Bay, it is not unusual to be able to pick it up, especially in the evenings. Heck, I have even listened to the station in San Francisco on occasion. Anything north of that, the signal tends to switch off with 102.5 KSFM in Sacramento, which also plays the same type of music, so you might not know which is which! However, I really can't stand the DJ's on KSFM, so whenever I'm north of Oakland, I make sure not to select this preset button. My favorite DJ is Mary Jane, who plays the slow jams at night, ala Xavier the X Man on Wild, but it is always more sexy to hear a female voice. read more

Ups and downs. On the one hand, the variety of music is immensely better than 94.9 or 99.7 who play the same 5 sings over and over. 102.5 will play something from a couple years ago once in a while. It's reception is also surprisingly good, reaching large parts of the Bay Area. I would've given it a solid 4, however the ads have gotten to be way too much. They feel much longer than on either of the other 2 pop stations. PS. Am I the only one that feels 102.5 and 99.7 have the same pre recorded male announcer? Weird, cus you would think 102.5 would be closer to 94.9 since they're both owned by iHeart. read more

I'm not going to lie... I grew up on KDON and even though I dislike the Slow Jams Hour since I like everything fast, now and a lot of it... it kept me sane throughout middle school and jr. high. Garbage top 40 with a morning show that's laughable at best. Sam Diggidy makes a few good points about this and that from time to time but his sidekick Show Biz is an absolute tool. Boy Toy Bobby is an idiot as well (hence the name). Heavy Emphasis on commericals and playing the same 10 songs every morning. And the (phone jack at 50) is not funny. Never was. I feel bad for the touring comics that have to do a radio spot here with this bunch of burnouts. read more

The was the only one I grew up listening while in middle school and high school while in that whole trendwhore. I wisened up a bit became a metalhead and hated the commercials. They rotate the same song way too much. Just like how much CaCa Roach they play on the rock station. I stopped listening to that station about 17 years ago? It really sucks... read more

Kdon is horrible. In fairness the radio as a whole is very bad

the same 5 lame songs on repeat. Cheezy Whiney Disney Channel soundin music (Like Beiber, Mark Anthony, Mendes, soulja Boy ect.)

I grew up in the shadow of KDON's transmitter. They started out Rock like so many classic stations of the day - KOME, KSJO but sometime in the late 80's the format changed to top 40. KDON now sucks so bad they don't even play music I don't like. If there was a bigger insult to musicians who actually learned how to play their instruments then KDON is your station. If you enjoy the mindless drivel of another stupid "Dog house in the morning show" that seems so common in these corporate owned radio stations then tune on in. If you don't mind listening to repetitive modern top 40 crap written for no other purpose than to make a buck then look no further. If you love the mindless celebration of ignorant pop culture then by all means, find KDON on your dial. It's not hard to miss. Just tune your radio until you hear your speakers start to suck and you'll be on the money. read more
