Van Pelt Family Bakery - $70 Berry Chocolate Cake

Van Pelt Family Bakery

I was searching for a place in our little country town that would allow us to get a vegan cake…read more And that wouldn't taste like sand (and hold together as such). Well, we sure did! My request was fairly last-minute (3 or 4 days). The overall experience from initial contact to even after-party experience was very, very good. Maggie even helped guide my lost aunt to her location to pick up the cake. We ordered a cake for my wife's birth. It was a Berry Chocolate Cake. Not having been there before, I was flying a little blind but this looked good. It was not inexpensive but she can't do this for free. And it was worth it. The cake was quite large and easily fed way over 8 despite saying for 8 (this is certainly not a complaint). Now the cake...it is a cake so is going to be sweet but it wasn't over-the-top killer sweet. It was DELICIOUS. There were several unsuspecting participants who had the cake not knowing it was vegan and all very positive comments about how good it was. Maggie the Magician created something fantastic. Deeee-lish! I don't generally review after only 1 experience but she was so great (service + product + presentation) that I felt it only right to do so. Kudos, Maggie. Well done.

I have to say this is my best experience with a baker ever. I had an emergency situation where I…read moreneeded last minute treats for a baby shower, the day before the event. Maggie, the owner was extremely accommodating and kind. The gluten free donuts, gluten free cupcakes, and gluten free lemon lavender cookies were outstanding. The gluten free ginger molasses cookies were a massive hit at my event. The fact that all of her treats can be made vegan and gluten free, are an absolute win. They are better then any other treat you will find in town. Absolutely incredible service and product. I will be a regular customer.

Baker Baker - More pastries until they sell out!

This place has a really fun variety of pastries from different countries, which is a unique layout!…read moreI got here around 10am and they still had a decent selection left, though you could tell there had been a lot more earlier in the morning. I went with a lingonberry custard pastry (I forgot what the actual name was) and it was absolutely delicious! The tart lingonberries, creamy custard, flaky pastry, and sweet glaze all complemented each other so well. I do wish there was a lot more filling and that it was more evenly distributed, as I only got a few bites with the filling and the rest were just plain pastry with glaze (still yummy though). The service was very quick and the people behind the counter were helpful and friendly.

We got to Baker Baker around 8:10am on A Saturday and they were already sold out of most things,…read morewhich honestly just shows how loved they are. The lady at the front was so kind and welcoming, even though it was clear they'd had a rush (it was Easter weekend, so totally understandable that people came early and stocked up!). Everything is super reasonably priced, all items are $3, and you can get a half dozen for just $12. That's wild for the quality you're getting! They have an amazing variety: danishes, cookies, pound cakes, and more. We ended up with a vanilla glazed cinnamon bun, lemon pound cake, cinnamon danish crunch, almond cloud cookie, karma cookie, and a pecan pie bar to split with one of my close friends, and every single bite was absolutely delicious. I wish I had known there was a line forming right at 7am. I would've rolled out of bed sooner. Thankfully, they told us you can call ahead and reserve, which we might just do next time because I'm already thinking about going back. I highly recommend the danishes & vanilla cinnamon glaze glazed bun and the pecan pie bar! This place is one of those spots you'll want to visit again and again, just get there early or call ahead to snag the goods!

Upper Crust is such a cool little find! Fresh, flavorful, and totally worth it. They also have really fun merch -- cute t-shirts and hats that actually make you want to rep the place. Love a café with personality and good swag! Overall, I really enjoyed my time there. Relaxed vibe, quality coffee, and delicious bread -- I'll absolutely be back.

I cannot wait to go back up and purchase sourdough again! I am very particular about my sourdough bread and this one you can taste the sour. Fresh market is the only other place that I can taste the sour in the sourdough bread. They offer pastries as well and different coffees. In the same plaza, they have a fish market that has great fish dip that went perfectly with the sourdough. The service was great and friendly. There is a raised area on the floor where if you're not looking, you can trip easily. I recommended that they put a bright orange piece of tape on it to get people's eye to notice there's a ledge. The ambience of the place feels like a bakery with all the different selections that you would see in France. If you are in the area go check it out! Enjoy!
