The Wolverine roll was astonishing, the ambiance was spot on. Kazumi has an extensive menu with ample options for hibachi or a more traditional restaurant setting. It was Mother's Day for our visit. Reservations were made well in advance. We were promptly seated when we arrived and request for drinks and appetizers was made quickly. We were given enough time to enjoy our appetizers and first course before the hibachi chef arrived and went over all of our orders. From there it is hard to describe. The chef was knowledgeable and engaging, but he was in a hurry. We are long term patrons of Kazumi and we were disappointed a bit. The food was good, but the experience we anticipated was lacking. There was little of the usual enthusiasm we were used to, very little interaction with the guests and the chef appeared to be in a big rush to be done; so much so that the chicken I had ordered as part of my meal was missed. The chef got a little panicked, ran to the kitchen for an order of raw chicken and threw it on the grill, chopped the already coned click into tiny piecesput a bowl over it to speed the process. read more

This was definitely an experience. I love hibachi and this was near my hotel on a recent business trip. I met up with several colleagues for a late dinner at Kazumi and thought we could all find something we liked. The restaurant was pretty clean and your average hibachi setup. Our waiter was a younger guy who was a bit snarky and quick witted, but we all had fun with him. He got all our drinks and hibachi order taken. I opted for the steak and chicken combo, but with no rice or noodles and extra veggies. When the hibachi chef came out, it was the usually flinging food and big flames. One of my coworkers had never been before and looked a bit horrified, but we all had fun. The hibachi was pretty decent, I wish I had a little more veggies, since I skipped the other sides. I visited Kazumi's for the first time and enjoyed my experience. When you walk in you will notice there are two sides to the restaurant. One side is for regular dining and the other side is for hibachi dining. We sat on the hibachi side and it was such a unique way to dine. I have never had hibachi before so this was super cool to me. Our waitress came to our table right away to take our drink and food order. She was very kind. Once we put in our order, we had to wait for a chef to be available. We waited about 15 minutes I would say which wasn't terrible. But while you wait you are served soup and salad, if you order it with your meal. (It came with each meal we ordered). It was nice to munch on something while we waited. Once the chef got to our grill, he was on a roll. He threw the tongs around with such great talent keeping us entertained while he cooked our meal right in front of us. He made sure that our meat was cooked to our liking. He was talkative and seemed to really enjoy his job. The food was excellent and you get so much food for less than $30 an entree. We had shrimp hibachi and salmon hibachi. Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. I had a lot of food to take home there was much food! They do have a bar area too if you wanted to have a drink before dinner or at your table. Note that it does get very busy during peak dinner hours and there will be longer wait times due to the nature of hibachi style dining. Decent hibachi... we love the fried rice and the pink colored sauce on it! Basic sushi... the rice doesn't taste as seasoned as it should. This last time I went, on Sunday, the online Sunday menu says any 3 rolls for $15.95 and then has a list of rolls under it. We went for this because it was my daughter's birthday, she wanted sushi, and that seemed like a great deal. We got there and they said those rolls are not included in the pick any three. Just the basic rolls are for the pick three. The Sunday menu doesn't show those rolls. The management would not honor the prices for the pick three with the rolls on the Sunday menu. We spend $250 when we go there and we will not be back for some time. They would have given us around a $40 discount because of their mistake but ended up losing probably $1,000 in revenue from the time we will not be going because of this. The waiter double checked ingredients and talked to chefs about which options he could have being fish sauce is still a primary ingredient in their main courses. I appreciated the time and seriousness he took. Our food was great. We had edamame, dumplings, sushi, veggie roll sushi, crab ragoons, miso soup + house salad and chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki would probably be the only thing we wouldn't re-order. The sauce had a very mild, and only 2 pieces of broccoli for the veggie. Another great meal at Kazumi! We had our usual - crab rangoons for an appetizer and filet and chicken for our entrees - oh, and I ordered extra noodles because that's the highlight of the meal for me. To drink I had the pear saketini (or two) and Jeff had a glass of Bell's Two Hearted. The filet was delicious! I don't know how they make it so good! Chicken, veggies and rice were REAL good, but those noodles! I could have just those for a meal! (Wait, can I actually just have those for a meal?) The little cup of salad with the creamy ginger dressing, is so good we joke about asking for a straw to get the last little bits sucked up. And the miso soup is so tasty! The food here is actually really good and the yum yum sauce is delicious. Our waitress was a little busy so she wasn't as attentive as she would be if they weren't but she tried her best and got us what we needed. The chef did a little show work at the beginning with his spatulas but that was like it. Other than that it was just cooking. The one we usually go to at home has more showmanship. Typical of your everyday hibachi experience, Kazumi delivers a solid dining and entertainment experience. There wasn't really anything different about the menu or the type of gimmicks that Kazumi does different from literally every other place like this that I've been. The nice thing.. there aren't many restaurants like this in the area, so knowing the experience is the same as other cities across the US is a little comforting. The environment, menu and prices are almost the exact same everywhere and this wasn't any different. I came in with a group of 6 friends and we had the table to ourselves, which was really nice. The server was prompt with our drink order and refills of soda, and the chef was friendly and made us feel welcome and entertained. We were originally headed to Wok and Roll in Spring Lake but they were closed! So after much sadness, Yelp showed us there was nothing to fear with Kazumi reasonably close by to fulfill our sushi wants. For a Saturday night they weren't terribly busy, we were seated right away and the dining space is nicely separated from the hibachi so you are insulated from most of the noise. Our server was friendly and attentive, plenty of refills and we needed a few things like extra chopsticks. We ordered some sushi and chicken teriyaki. All of our food was very good. Presentation was nice and we didn't wait long for our food. I tried the Sweetheart roll and a California roll. The California was pretty standard and tasty, the Sweetheart roll was amazing and I loved how the sushi melted in your mouth. I was a little nervous considering the star rating and reviews but I was pleasantly surprised! If we are in the area and hungry for sushi we'll make sure to stop in! read more

I have been to many sushi restaurants. This one didn't feel right to me. I get the feeling that sashimi is not popular here. I ordered the sushi roll and sashimi combo. Sashimi was a little on the dry side. I decided to give them another try and went back couple days later. This time I ordered spicy roll and phat Thai. This was better. My husband and I head to Kazumi anytime we are in Montague, since it is the closest place to get sushi. We are sushi obsessed! I grew up eating authentic sushi in Hawaii and California, and I'm so thankful we now have options in west Michigan. The quality is good, not the best, but definitely good enough...prices are not bad, service was mediocre (fast but just not super friendly). The sushi chef who made some of our rolls was a very friendly guy and left a better impression than the hostess and waitress. We find that dinner sushi is best ordered with a party platter...more bang for your buck!
