What a fantastic decision! We were in a bit of a rush to get to our next adventure, and with long lines at other restaurants in Buena Vista, we decided to give Kawa a try. The food is absolutely terrific--fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. We had the chicken tikka masala, and I can honestly say it might be the best I've ever had. (Be sure to order the naan, too!) This place deserves a line out the door! Don't make our mistake and pass this one by--Kawa is a must-visit for anyone looking for incredible food in Buena Vista.

Vindalo and the korma. Birani rice was excellent.

Pretty good Indian food! The guy working was super nice and had a good vibe. I'd recommend it.

An empty dining area on a Friday night!

We ordered the samosas, naan, chicken tikka masala, and lamb vindaloo -- all of it was extraordinary.

This is about as good as it gets in Gunnison, and that's saying quite a bit because there are…read moreseveral very nice restaurants here. The wine list is very nice, and you won't break the bank -- especially at happy hour, with two dollars off each glass of wine between 5 and 7 PM. We had the House Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina, and it had a delicious flavor and aroma. It was a full bodied and smooth, dark red offering. For an appetizer, we had the Shishati grilled peppers with pesto/cilantro sauce, and they were just fantastic. They are mild, nicely grilled, and beautifully presented. It is served as an appetizer, but please be warned, one out of every nine peppers is exceedingly hot. We had about 12 peppers, and all of them were mild, so we beat the odds! I've had hamburgers all over the world, and I can honestly say I have not had a better cheeseburger than I got right here from the menu at Blackstock. It's in a traditional bun, lightly toasted, with tempura, onion, cracked pepper, mayo, Tabasco, candied and smoked bacon, and it is served with Hand-cut fries. You can add guacamole for a dollar, or blue cheese or Gruyere cheese for another dollar. But I did not add a thing; it was perfect as it came out of the kitchen for me! You will be asked how you want your hamburger cooked, and I chose medium. It could not have been better! It's on the menu at a very fair $21 including your hand-cut fries. My lovely dinner-date had the petite filet mignon, a 5-ounce offering of spectacular steak, served with goat cheese, potato croquettes, asparagus, stewed shallots, served with a Cabernet Demi glaze at $45. It was a large serving, I believe bigger than 5 ounces, because we are taking half of it home in a to-go box! Again, the food was spectacular... really good. We will finish with the flourless chocolate torte, serve with whipped cream and Amarina dark cherries at $11. If I was a betting man, I'd say you're gonna love this place! Take a few pictures, do what I did, and leave a review, because more people need to know the quality of food coming out of this little storefront on a busy street in Gunnison! And if you ask for Danielle, be advised, he's a great server and you will get exactly what you need! He's very attentive, and charming.

The wine is surprisingly great! This is a house, Malbec, dark, full body, excellent bouquet, and nice finish!

We had read some reviews that the ramen was a small portion, so I was surprised to see the good sized portion that they served us! My son got the Katsu Chicken with the avocado salad. He loved both. The husband ordered the bento box which was perfect because he couldn't decide what to get, so it was a little bit of everything. The food was great! The service was a little rushed because they were busy, but our server was personable and friendly. There was a birthday at another table, and it was fun to have the entire restaurant join in on singing. They also had a fun animal headband for the birthday girl. It was a little pricey and cost us about $120 for 4 people (not including tax) but it was good, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

We ordered a few sushi rolls, a bento dinner box, and a Thai iced tea. When everything arrived, all of the sushi had been packed together and was completely smushed, so instead of everyone enjoying their own rolls, we had to pick through each other's food. It wasn't presented well at all. The sushi itself was about a 2/10. The cuts of fish weren't very good, the rolls were falling apart, and the quality just wasn't there. The bento dinner was honestly disappointing. The salmon was very dry, and the vegetable spring roll was undercooked and inedible. Just look at the picture, that is not $21 worth of food, so disappointed! Even the Thai iced tea wasn't sweet. We spent close to $200, so we expected much better quality and care. We hate leaving negative reviews, but this meal simply wasn't worth the price. Unfortunately, we wouldn't order again.

However, it is a shame to find only a single server on duty, a familiar face who has been here for years, or at least as long as I can remember. She works tirelessly and remains polite to a fault, yet she is visibly struggling to keep pace with bagging to-go orders, waiting tables, clearing dishes, and seating new guests. Miyako, I love your establishment and have been a loyal patron since 2016, but please hire another server to give her some much-needed help.

The cheese tan tan was good, probably just a bit too much on the cheese so I would stick with more of a classical ramen if I were to go back. The one thing that caught my eye that I wasn't a fan of was the pricing. I looked at a standard tonkatsu which is kind of my baseline when I'm looking at different ramens. If I wanted to add in all the vegetables that are normally standard and an egg it would go from the $17 base to almost $26 or $9 more when compared to a very comparable competitor nearby that has it priced at $17.50 for a tonkatsu with all the same base, vegetables, egg, etc. That was the reason for the option on our side to stick with the pre-selected specialties so we didn't have to jump through hoops pricing wise. Which takes me to service normally. I like to get three adult meals and split one of the adult size portion between my 4 and 6-year-old. Some places are very accommodating and will go out of their way to split it in the back kitchen so we aren't making a mess at the table. Others are kind of like, Yeah, we'll give you an extra bowl and you do you... Normally I'm not picky and I wouldn't care one way or the other, but since I was already irked by the pricing when I asked if they could do that for me in the kitchen they said " that wouldn't be very easy for the chef so I'll just bring you the bowls".. I'm glad we're doing what's easy for the chef and not for me the customer.
