18 Piece Chuchvara, Beef Stroganoff, and Uzbek Plov
    Courtney P.

What a unique and interesting culinary experience! While visiting Pittsburgh, my dad, my husband, and I stumbled upon Kavaar for dinner one evening. Be sure to double check their hours because there are only certain evenings where dine in is an option. We made that mistake and showed up the night before and rather than do takeout decided to wait and come back the following evening. Once we were able to dine in, we let the waitress guide us in terms of what to order and how much. We ended up having an absolute feast, but the food was phenomenal. For our dishes, we ordered the carrot salad, dumplings, bread with cheese and potatoes, samsa, beef stroganoff, and Uzbek Plov. Each and every dish was so unique but packed full of flavor. I really loved them all but the dish that surprised me the most and kept me wanting more was the carrot salad. It seemed so simple in its ingredients and construction, but it was so flavorful and unlike anything I have ever tried before. This is definitely a cuisine I am not as familiar with, but after this experience, I would undoubtedly be a regular customer here if I lived in the area.

Like many others here, Kavsar was my first experience with authentic Uzbek cuisine and they didn't disappoint. Service was a touch on the slower side, but nothing that ruined my meal and it certainly ended up being worth the wait. I couldn't decide between the Nuhot Shurak (chickpeas, beef, and onions) and Uzbek Plov (sort of the closest Uzbek equivalent to a biryani dish, from what I gather) and ended up going with the former; it was great and I'd love to try the Plov the next time I'm here. All in all, a solid experience and a great hidden gem in the area, plus it's not too far away from the Mon Incline.

I got the Uzbek Plov and split the Chicken Boat. The Uzbek Plov is good (4/5), but the portion was a little smaller than I was hoping for, especially the amount of meat. The chicken boat was all right but very overpriced (2/5); it was $20 for nothing special. It tasted just like normal cheesy bread you can make at home. Service was all right (3/5). We had to ring a bell to get someone to come up and seat us. They also don't do tap water, so they charge you for bottled water. The restaurant was pretty quiet when we arrived but was filling in when we were leaving. Nothing out of the ordinary for the ambiance.

Outstanding meal- enjoyed the Kavsar chicken boat, homemade bread, Uzbek plav with beef, lagman, homemade cutlets and homemade dumplings- everything was delicious. Excellent service, beautiful little restaurant- nice ambiance. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Phenomenal. This is a great restaurant hidden in a somewhat hard-to-access part of town, but it's certainly worth the trip. The ordering process is a little unclear, so calling the restaurant to place an order is probably your best bet. In terms of the food, everything was great. We were especially pleased with the vegetarian friendly sections of the menu. The carrot salad was simple, but well seasoned and delicious. The atlas salad (tomato) was refreshing and crisp: not the world's greatest tomatoes, but the overall spread was created to account for that. The stuffed tomatoes were exceptionally well balanced with just enough tomato and just enough cheese filling. They felt somewhere between refreshing and somewhat heavy: exactly the right balance. The Uzbek bread was very clearly fresh with an excellent texture and nice fermented flavor. The vegetable lagman featured very fresh noodles with a decent amount of vegetables. The vegetable (potato and mushroom) hanum was nicely balanced by the tomato pepper sauce (though it's still a bit heavy). Definitely order an extra portion of the sauce: it's a complex and delicious addition to the meal. All told, this place is well worth a visit. Ordering mid-day is a little awkward given the focus on takeout at that time, but you just need to be prepared for calling the restaurant when you show up. You'll be greatly rewarded with an excellent overall experience.

I have incredible memories of this place! I came here with my girlfriend who is from Russia to explore some of the cuisine that's part of their culture. The server was super kind. We came here when it was freezing outside in February, and the server let us wait in the restaurant for our bus to come. They brought us tea in a fancy teapot, and it was so much fun!! The food was incredible, my first experience with this cuisine. Awesome awesome awesome. For sure, you need to go here. By the way, I'm vegetarian, so I can assert the vegetarian options are great! Mushroom and potatoes, my beloved.

I've been wanting to try plov for a long time. Since they're takeout only, we decided we would eat in our car and then walk along Grandview avenue and enjoy the views. I got the plov and my companion got the Manti, plus we got the large bread. We shared. Our favorite turned out to be the Manti. It had a distinctive flavor we liked and felt light. The beef in the plov was very good but I was underwhelmed with the rice. Perhaps because of how many times over the years I've heard praise about plov. I really thought it was going to knock my socks off. I'm looking forward to trying other items. I wish the dining room was open, the pictures of it look beautiful and intimate. They have a private parking lot which is an important feature in this area. The service was interesting:) Takeout is one thing, but here I have to call when I get there. The doors are locked. So I call and say I am here. And a lady says ok few minutes. And that's it. 5 or so minutes later a lady stealthily comes out of the secret passage and hands me a bag. Then disappears. I literally did not see her come or leave! We chuckled walking back to our car.

I chose the restaurant for lunch while we were in Mt. Lebanon. The Elite reviews said all good…read morethings and the ratings were all 5s. We sat down and reviewed the menu and found some cuisine that was very unique to Uzbek to share and our server informed us most of our selections were not available. That took a bit of wind out of our sails for a moment until we regrouped. We decided to start with a sampler of samsa- beef, chicken, pumpkin with tomato garlic sauce. We were all very surprised that the pumpkin was everyone's favorite with the chicken as the 2nd most flavorful. We followed that with baba ganoush with pitas. Everyone enjoyed the unique flavor of the tahini and lemon in the dip. For our main course we ordered beef shish kabobs with rice, salad and fried sliced potatoes. The beef was flavored with cumin and chili spices which worked well. I would have thought it would have a sauce but surprisingly to me, the dried spices on the fried beef were outstanding! The dressing on the salad with the rice and beef was a great combo. The decor of the dining was amazing. One wall has the name of the restaurant and holes molded out of clay or plaster with lights and clay vases on each opening. See photo. The opposite wall had plates with names of prominent cities in Uzbekistan. This place will be a hit for a long time with the attention to detail and the unique cuisine. Looking forward to my next visit when I am in Pittsburgh!
