Kauno is a fantastic PT option and the best in the city. They take a very active + encouraging approach to recovery. I had both hips replaced + Kauno has been the change agent + game changer. Other tradiationl PT shops are passive + feels like an impersonal assembly line. Kauno has incredibly deep bench of experienced PT professionals who customize your recovery plan. Everything is 1-on-1 and personalized with right balance of professionalism, empathy and push. Brian (owner) again runs the best PT shop in SF and big fan of his colleague Eric Lan as well! read more

Recovering from my injury was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but working with Eric Lin made all the difference. From day one, he was supportive, comforting, and incredibly skilled. He didn't just treat my injury, he helped me rebuild my confidence and my strength when I honestly thought I'd never get back to normal. He has a rare ability to balance deep knowledge with genuine human connection. Every session, he somehow knew exactly when to push me and when to pull back. He explained everything clearly, celebrated every bit of progress, and kept me focused even on the tough days. What stood out most was how much he cares. You can feel it in the way he listens, encourages, and makes you believe in your own recovery. I can't recommend Eric enough. If you're dealing with an injury and want someone who will not only heal your body but lift your spirits, he's the one you want in your corner. read more

I had Tiara as my physical therapist and she was fantastic! I had persistent shoulder pain for weeks that was not getting better and I could not get an appointment anywhere. I randomly found Kauno online and they could get me in the next day (and took my insurance). In one visit Tiara identified exactly what was wrong and gave me an exercise to do. After my appointment, my injury got better so quickly that I didn't even need to make a second appointment. Highly recommend! read more

I highly recommend Eric Lin and Kauno for PT! I herniated a disc in 2017 and worked with other PTs, acupuncturists, and chiropractors but had limited improvement. I decided to try working with Eric and Kauno but was skeptical things would improve much. Eric was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive to detail, patiently reassuring me whenever I had concerns about my progress and quickly responding whenever I had questions about properly doing exercises at home. The pain is much more manageable now and I am able to resume all my activities including full court basketball! read more

Professional care, knowledgeable, kind, respectful, immensely helpful. Tiara was my PT, but all the others are excellent as well.

Kauno is a great physical therapy practice. The facilities are modern and clean and the staff are great. I worked mostly with Tiara who is amazing, but a shout out to Eric too who worked with me on a couple of occasions. I highly recommend this facility - all the asmin is extremely streamlined. Parking is not too much of a problem and is usually available less than a block away read more

Kauno is super accessible and was able to see someone the very next day. Their physical therapists are friendly, caring, and dependable. Sooooo grateful I found them. Shout out Mica read more

Stay away from this PT if you want to keep your money. They charge a $100 late cancellation fee. They are the only PT I know who has ever done this. Even if you are a repeat customer they do NOT care. I had to take a break as I had re-occurent symptoms that would have made PT impossible, and they simply charged me the $100 late fee after I explained them to me what happened. Absolutely horrendous that this is what the state of health care is. read more

Highly recommend Kauno for physical therapy! The team, including Tiara Dunson, Brian King, Eric Lin, Mica Flores, and Allyson Fong, are extremely knowledgeable, patient/friendly and committed to supporting clients through the recovery process. They are focused on core mechanics and lasting/sustainable techniques to maintain physical health. The facility is awesome with great equipment including weightlifting and cardio machines. They also have convenient bike parking inside and a banging music playlist on their Sonos speakers. Finally, they take most insurance and have great appointment availability. Go check out Kauno! read more

I came to Kauno with shoulder pain and limited range of motion for over 6 weeks, that didn't seem to go away. Had two sessions with Mica Flores, did only a few of the exercises she sent me home with, and after a week, the pain was gone (!). This was really impressive, and I'm a skeptical type that's hard to impress. There's a change that my pain would've resolved on its own in about the same time, but the exercises did help in the moment - as in, after I performed them at Kauno, the pain did go away. Other than that, the place is clean, has a variety of equipment, and results-oriented: I never felt pushed to keep coming back. The exercises were sent via an app that helps you follow along. To clarify the scope - as with any PT service, they focus on restoring normal function, so if you need help with stretching or anything performance-related, you'll need to go elsewhere. But for physical therapy, Kauno was excellent! read more

Brian, you changed my life! This review is long overdue, as I've been able to fully recover from posterior tibial tendon dysfunction also known as PTTD, with the help and life long resources from Brian. As a previous dancer and flat shoe-wearer, my arches collapsed overnight, and I was in tremendous amounts of pain, forced to get around on crutches and a scooter on/off for 2 years. I met with doctors and PT's across California yet no one was able to provide long term help - only shots of cortisone for the pain and the frequent response, "stay off your feet." Brian set the expectation that we'll need to test out different methods to understand the root cause and how to build strength again. We succeeded in not only getting me walking without pain again, but now being able to jump, run, and exercise. He provided me with long term strengthening exercises that have become a small part of my daily routine. I can't thank you enough for helping me walk without pain again! Now, I'm back to running, pilates, and dancing like normal again - in proper footwear, too. :) read more

I needed to have PT on my messed up shoulder and wasn't having any luck getting a an appointment quickly. I had recently walked by Kauno on my way to an appointment up the block and decided to check them out. I was soon scheduled with Candice Lee and filled out the paperwork online. Candice Lee did a great job of both listening to my litany of issues and doing exploratory soft tissue work to determine where and how to approach the problem. Some practitioners just put you through a set of exercises without trying to find out what is going on, so I appreciate the thorough and meticulous approach. read more

I was referred to physical therapy by my podiatrist after healing from a significantly displaced fifth metatarsal fracture. Out of the referrals presented I chose Eric Lin, DPT @Kauno. Eric's bio resonated with me as did his 5 star reviews on Zocdoc, and I chose Kauno because it is in walking distance to my home and I like to support businesses in the neighborhood that I live in. Well, Eric deserves his 5 star reviews - after just three sessions with him the non-stop pain at my fracture site has ceased! I am now able to walk more comfortably, and am gaining back the strength, mobility, balance, and control lost through a long immobilization period. Further, Eric's passion for his work is clearly evident as is his expertise. And the icing on the cake is that he is super personable, patient and helpful with giving instructions and demonstrations, and very responsive. Highly recommend Eric Lin and Kauno! read more

I had two PT sessions with Tiara as part of my rehabilitation from rotator cuff surgery, and her directions with the new exercises she assigned me were crystal clear, thorough and easy to follow -- so much so that I barely even needed to consult the illustrated guide she emailed me for doing the exercises on my own! On top of that, it was incredibly easy to make an appointment at Kauno. I was seen on time for both of my sessions. The facility in SOMA is roomy and I never felt like I was tripping over other patients while going through my routine (I can't say the same for some other places I have done PT at). read more

I've worked with 8 different PTs due to a range of health issues over 7 years and 4 surgeries and Kauno is by far the best, no comparison. I worked with Brendan (no longer here, he moved) and Allyson Fong. I have been at Kauno for my last two surgeries (total time 2 years). I'm now moving out of state or I'd continue. The two critical differences are that Kauno is 1-1 PT with no aides during your whole session and they focus on strength once you're past the initial recovery. A lot of clinics have "aides" which mean the PT sees you at the table for 15 min, then gives you a list of exercises to basically do on your own while the PT sees another patient and occasionally checks up on you. Kauno is 1-1 the whole time, without double booking. The difference in care is huge. This really ensures you're doing the exercises correctly and that you feel safe post-op. Both Allyson and Brendan have been able to adjust the workout in response to any weird pangs/pains I felt post op. They also are strength focused in that its more than just some mobility exercises you probably aren't actually going to do at home. (Although these are really important early post op so do them). The issue with other clinics is that months after postop youre still doing mobility stuff when you really need to build strength back. Theyre great about working with me to get to where i want to be in confidence and strength, ie checking squat, deadlift and bench form. I recommend Allyson to all of my friends looking for PT. read more

I'm currently being treated at Kauno after a bike crash related injury and I'm very happy with my experience so far. The intake is quite simple - you submit your insurance info online and the third party billing specialist confirms whether you're in network and have PT on your insurance plan. After that you make an appointment for an evaluation and then start consequent treatments. I ended up with Candice as my therapist and I am so glad - she's fantastic! I am delighted with my rate of progress (huge shoutout to Candice for motivation and her recovery programming) and with the way this clinic runs therapy sessions. In my experience each appointment starts with 5-10 minutes of deep tissue / mobility work followed by 35 ish minutes of exercises. You have your therapists undivided attention for the entire time, which makes a big difference. All the exercises are legit and make a real, tangible difference. As someone with a high aversion towards pseudoscientific woo-woo that can sometimes be peddled at health centers, I am very happy to say that Kauno and Candice keep it real. There's no promise of magic recovery via ancient medicine etc - you have to work for it (can you tell that I've had negative experiences in the past yet? lol) but in the end, if you're motivated to get better, you get out exactly what you put in. All in all, if you're in the evidence based nutrition / exercise camp and got injured, Kauno is the place that will get you back out there the soonest. Side note - it's in a somewhat sketchy area (more so unpleasant than unsafe, but keep in mind that I am a large male so I may get hassled less), taking a walk from Muni/Bart here can sometimes be grimy. If you take a long way around, it's a lot more pleasant than walking by the Federal Building on 7th St. They do have secure bike parking inside the clinic too. read more

The physical treatment I received when I visited Kauno was actually pretty good. However, they completely messed up the billing and insurance and have caused me way too much paperwork and phone calls trying to resolve the issue. I clarified the billing before attending my appointment. After that, my insurance got notified of a patient responsibility far above what was previously discussed. I had to send multiple emails back and forth and follow up many times and the final answer I got was that they accidentally reported the incorrect amount to my insurer and to just ignore my insurer's explanation of benefits because they would sort it out. I still haven't heard back from Kauno, my insurance records are still affected by this "mistaken" extra charge, and I still have a few more phone calls before this is fully resolved. I don't know what kind of operation they have going on here but save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else. read more

I had the privilege of working with Tiara during the rehabilitation process for my back injury. From the initial meeting, she was always warm and engaging during our sessions. Tiara provided a comprehensive assessment for both my injury and my working capacity, and developed a plan which focused on gradual progress and improved flexibility. She was always quick to inquire about any pain or discomfort before we would begin the movement exercises, and if needed would adjust our planned workout with my best interest in mind. Tiara was very knowledgeable, extremely competent, and displayed a true passion for helping people return to optimal physical health. I feel extremely grateful to have found Kauno Physical Therapy as I had no prior knowledge of the facility or the employees. It was about a 40 minute drive to downtown SF from my house, but Tiara made it worth the commute. I would highly suggest Kauno PT for anyone rehabbing from an injury or just in the need of strength or mobility. And especially, I would highly recommend working with Tiara during the rehabilitation process. She was just an incredible asset in my rehabilitation, and I will always be tremendously grateful for her guidance, understanding, caring, and knowledge! Daniel Rock read more

Kauno really set a high standard for themselves. Highly recommend. Plus: 1) One on One time - The 45 minutes dedicated one on one time really makes a difference to have enough time to work with your PT to communicate progress/challenges, go through treatment, and get feedback on exercise forms. In my past experiences, it was either one person passing onto another or a documentation-heavy place. 2) Passionate PT doctors - You can observe the PT doctors at the Kauno are passionate about what they do and really care about patients. Saw Brian, who is an amazing person, knowledgeable, and focused in each session to walk you through each step of the way. I went to see for persistent lower back and neck/shoulder pain. Always leaving to have learned something new and post improvement. 3) Online appointment - it's just awesome! Tip: -Insurance. You can email to check qualifications and co-pay. -Plenty of meter parking. read more

Had such an amazing experience here that now, my immediate reaction when friends bring up a physical issue is to suggest Kauno and Andrew Collins! If you're looking for a physical therapist where: (1) you'll get seen by the actual therapist (not aides); (2) you'll have your whole session to yourself; (3) you'll make progress quickly (no unnecessary extra sessions); and (4) you'll be in modern, clean facilities; for (5) fair pricing (max $150 / session *before* insurance coverage discounts which further reduce the price), look no further! These were my selection criteria which led me to choose Kauno. Before working with Andrew, I'd been experiencing sporadic heel discomfort for 3+ months, including on shorter (less than 2 hour) hikes , and gotten diagnosed with achilles tendinitis. Over 1 month (5 sessions) at Kauno, Andrew Collins helped me fully recover from my achilles tendinitis through a set of ~5 exercises that strengthened not just the achilles but also all of the muscles in my legs. As a result, shortly after working with Andrew, I was able to go on a two week trek that involved 5+ hours of daily hiking with significant elevation gain, without ever feeling my heels! This was the best outcome I could have hoped for, and Kauno will now be my go-to! As a bonus, Andrew was great at educating me and explaining everything along the way and emailed me all of the exercises with instructional videos which made repeating the set at home super easy. read more

Reached out with an urgent request for a new patient. Their chat bot took down my info and I never heard back.

Kauno care is excellent care. The close attention given to the patient has been unmatched by any other PT providers I have experienced. The 45 minutes allotted are yours alone and may consist of hands on therapy as well as closely monitored exercises. It was refreshing to get consistent, continuous one-on-one care unlike the 'shared' situations that seem to be the norm. There are a variety of machines and other aids for use during therapy and everything is kept spotless at all times but especially at present. Both my husband and I have received stellar care from Allyson. She checks with us regarding progress or pitfalls before customizing the appointment. So happy to have found Kauno and we give it 4 thumbs up! read more

I am one of their longest-running patients on here. I have been here for a few different reasons. I just gotta say, I have a lot of fun when I go here. My most recent reason to go back to Kauno left me in a state where it was difficult for me to walk even a block. The holistic approach that Brendan and I did really helped me get to a baseline. Now I have even bigger goals to strive for, and I'm looking forward to continued recovery, healing, and strengthening. These people definitely will work with you and meet you halfway to figure out a plan that works for you. Humblebrag: From 2 minutes on the exercise machine, I am now up to 5 minutes and don't need to sit down right after! I am literally seeing results. Don't think it can get any better than that! read more

I came to Kauno after multiple knee injuries from overuse during marathon training. At the time it hurt to walk and I thought I was going to sit out the marathon for the second year in a row. Eric helped me with strength and mobility and coached me over the past 10 weeks. I ran the marathon and my knee felt strong. Thanks to Eric and Kauno for getting me back to running! read more

I came to Kauno to work on my shoulder instability after my third dislocation. After one surgery 4 years ago, I was hoping to avoid another and get back to climbing and swimming - goals that I acknowledge might not have been realistic given my history. Candice did a great job assessing my condition and understanding my goals. She provided just the right level of strengthening exercises and increased the intensity at just the right pace and the results were rapid improvement in my strength and range of motion. There was also a good amount of core and upper body strength improvement which was a nice side benefit. I have been really happy with the rate of progress. I have been able swim with no pain and am on track to get back climbing soon. Candice's treatment has given me a lot of confidence to get back to the activities that I enjoy. I highly recommend Candice and the Kauno team! read more

Background: I specifically switched my insurance to find a physical therapist that preformed "Active Release Technique" and was lucky to stumble onto Kauno and meeting Brian. Like many reviewers, I've been to other therapist, tried different exercises and didn't see huge improvements in my shoulder pain or flexibility which made it hard to hold myself accountable to the exercises. I feel compelled to write an review because of the drastic improvements I've seen in my overall health since finding Kauno. I am most amazed at how Brian can ask different questions to help a patient vocalize what's wrong especially when the location and type of pain can be difficult to describe. You just know that your body isn't working correctly but don't know why. He spends the entire session with you and uses some type of "magic" to manipulate and loosen limbs in very specific ways. At the end of each session, I walk out of the office feeling very pain free. It also helps that the entire office is super clean and the rest of the team are all super friendly. It's really wonderful to see a group of doctors that work so well together while really prioritizing the health of their patients. So lucky to have found Kauno. Call me a fan!! read more

I was anxious about doing physical therapy for some major should pain, after a really bad experience elsewhere in San Francisco. Luckily I found Kauno this time. Tiara at Kauno is great!! I came here for what I thought was carpel tunnel (I work in a restaurant and had numbness and pain in both my arms, wrists and shoulders) however Tiara helped me discover that my problem was in my nerves. She is extremely knowledgeable with how the body works, and was able to resolve my pain problems after only a couple of weeks. Kauno is a very clean facility and has all the equiu you would need for rehabilitation. Highly recommend! read more

Really great experience all around. I worked with Tiara on my chronic neck pain, low back and knee pain. I've gotten close to a full recovery in each each area, and I'm able to play basketball, run, and live an active lifestyle again. Each session, Tiara taught me new exercises and stretches that felt tailored to where I was at in my recovery. She challenged me to push myself to go beyond the therabands I had plateaued at for years and onto actual weights and cables to continue to build my body's ability to carry higher and higher loads. Super satisfied, would recommend to anyone! read more

Hahh, so I bumped my elbow half a year ago. I know, I'm usually pretty clumsy, but this bump led me to constantly experience pain when I was doing push-up and bench presses to the point where I straight-up stopped doing them. My trainers recommended Brian and after a short introduction, I booked an appointment at Kauno earlier this month! My initial fear was if my injury was even something I should come in for. Brian was very empathetic and made me feel comfortable talking about it. He said that any injury that does not leave normally (e.g. after a few weeks) would be a reason to see a physical therapist. Turns out I had a minor tricep tendonitis. Brian discovered it immediately and made some adjustments in the first appointment, along with a few exercises that I could do. He was also kind enough to email me videos of them! I'm only on the second appointment and I feel almost healed! My triceps have no pain. The best thing about Brian is he's really considerate and checks your insurance before your appointment so you don't have to worry about the bill coming up and he is the coolest guy to talk to. So don't think your injury is too silly like mine and come visit Brian! He's amazing and I highly recommend him. :) Update: my six-month elbow pain (elbow tendinitis) required ~3 sessions (1x/week), but we had four sessions just in case. It's been a week now and I've been able to do push exercises (pushups, yoga chaturangas) with no pain or scary popping noises! read more

I have been going to Brian for my PT sessions and my body has been consistently improving from the first session! I had a "bad" back injury from deadlifting years ago and I have been scared to use my back for the past years. The previous treatment I've been to were only focusing on massaging the back, stretching the hip-flexors... But those treatments were focusing on my localized areas instead of the whole body and I did not see very much improvement. Still very scared when it comes to bend down and pick any stuff up, let alone going back to the gym and deadlift. Brian's treatment has been different. In the first session, he quickly assessed that hip flexor was not the root cause, my tight hamstring is. He even went above and beyond to develop a program to help me tear down my fear of using my back. We are 10ish sessions in and my back has never been more flexible and I am even able to perform deadlift with a trap bar! More importantly, I'm not very scared of using my back anymore I can bend down with back rounded, pick stuff up like a normal person. All the credit goes to Brian and his knowledge base. Stick with the professional PTs guys they have been thru years of learning and can truly make a difference!! read more

I had suffered an ACL tear, and my doctor recommended that I needed PT before my surgery. I tried a few places, but Brendan at Kauno was quick to respond, knew everything about my injury, and within a few sessions had me back to walking normally again. I'm glad I went to see him. After my surgery, he has been constantly checking in on me, and I plan to continue working with him till I recover completely. He, along with the other team have experience with sports injuries. They know the hardships, and how to get the best recovery out of the patient. If you need PT (hopefully the injury/need isn't serious), I would highly recommend them. You will be in great hands! read more

Brian is taking great care to help me overcome some lower back issues. After seeing a different physical therapist last year as well as a few intense months of chiropractic work (not to mention the off-and-on attempts at chiropractic therapy over the past few years), I was once again looking for someone new. None of the prior treatments were helping. I was frustrated, to say the least. From the first time I came into Kauno, I was impressed by Brian's analysis and knowledge. Following Brian's treatment plan, and continuing to be diligent in @ home exercises, I have seen real improvements in my back. My issues aren't fully solved yet (yet have very clearly improved), and I know that within a few months I'll be better than I have been in many years. Thank you Brian! read more

I avoided PT for years after I had a poor experience after a bad back injury several years ago. I simply didn't think PT was relevant for me but when an ankle injury presented me with PT as an option again, I decided to give it another shot. Thankfully, I happened upon Brian and Brendan at Kauno and I am now a big believer of PT! It really matters who your PT is. After recovering from my ankle injury in record time (even my doctor was surprised), Brian has been helping me with this age-old back pain I've had since that first injury. He's thoughtful with his body work, analysis and the exercises he assigns me (which I am frankly terrible at keeping up with - my bad). He also makes each visit fun. I've recommended them to my sister and friends, and now to all you! read more

Tried out a few PT clinics in the Bay and this one has been the best by far. Brendan is very knowledgeable and skilled - he takes the time to explain his methods and craft a personalized routine to help you recover. I was looking to fix chronic hip pain so I could get back to competitive sports. At other PT clinics, I did generic strengthening and mobility routines that didn't really improve things. Brendan's exercises were much more targeted and functional. I saw a big improvement after just a few sessions. Furthermore, the clinic is very clean with high-quality equipment. I highly recommend Kauno to anyone. read more

As Tina Turner put it, "Simply the best, better than all the rest" - last I checked they haven't mastered the "Rollin" shimmy of dear Aunt Tina... but that's about the only quasi-negative thing a person could say about the team over at Kauno. Long story short, these guys are extremely knowledgeable but approach each session without ego. Instead of simply blazing through a quick checklist of yes/no questions, they take the time to unravel what root causes could be in play, what lifestyle factors could influence the issue at hand and create a customized regimen to help you with the specific problems you walk into their office with. (FWIW this is coming from a skeptic who has had mixed results with PT at other locations) Now don't think you're going to simply get handed a regimen of exercises to try out at home and dismissed out the door that easily. (Basically the opposite of a dentist who throws floss at you and hopes for the best ;) These DPTs (Doctors of Physical Therapy) mean business and they're going to get on the floor with you to have you give things a test drive and provide corrections to form so you're attacking things the right way once you're home (there is a gym training space built into their center, wear your workout clothes as they will have you move around while dialing into those root causes). Rather than spending 15 minutes checking in and filling out paperwork and then the same amount of time with your DPT, you'll spend most all of your appointment with the person you've booked your appointment with while at Kauno and if you get stuck with a quick question once you're back in the wild they're happy to answer questions via email or text in between appointments. One of the things that really sets their approach apart is the fact that they are actively invested in seeing you get better and want to get you back up and going on your own ASAP instead of seeing you come through the door each and every week. When I was facing having to cancel a dream trip after severely hurting my back and being unable to walk properly for weeks, it was working with Brendan that got me back on my feet and onto the plane! A few days after we landed Brendan even took the time to follow up and see how things were going and if we needed to make any mini adjustments to my routine to make sure the trip went as smoothly as possible. Any person would be lucky to work with Brendan, Brian or their team (I haven't gotten to know Tiara, but trust anyone they bring in is excellent). I've already had a family member who was having back pain head over to Kuano and will continue to wholeheartedly refer them when friends and family are dealing with any physical issues. Carrying on with dearest Tina (Turner) theme, the team at Kuano is "Better than anyone, anyone I ever met [at my large healthcare provider]" read more
