If you need a total knee replacement, go to Dr Callander! An older family member I care for had been suffering for 1-1.5yrs from arthritis related degeneration. Other doctors just wanted to do the TKR based on imaging. Dr Callander takes into account actual patient pain and condition of the joint, to first suggest conservative treatments. He'll be the first to tell you not to get a joint replacement if it's not needed since it's a significant recovery. We went thru a multi-month process and all appointments have been great. Dr Callander is very busy but he is very much on top of your condition and treatment needed. The surgery was great, he had good communication/follow-up and the recovery is going on, steadily improving. His office staff - PA and assistant - are great too. They are all very busy, so for all the paperwork you will need for your work leave, disability, insurance etc, just make sure to give them multiple weeks of notice and call them with reminders so you get what you need in time. Dr. Peter W. Callander is a superb surgeon with exceptional skills. He performed a total knee replacement on my left knee in February 2025. The recovery was excellent and quick, and most importantly, very painless. Aside from taking Tylenol for two weeks, I didn't need any other painkillers, and I was able to drive two weeks after the surgery. Because of the positive results, at my request, Dr. Callander performed a partial knee replacement on my right knee in September. This recovery was even faster; the swelling and pain were significantly reduced compared to the previous surgery. I only took 500mg Tylenol twice a day for 10 days. I am a lifelong athlete, 54 yrs old when I had total hip replacement in my left hip, in Oct 2024. I was concerned about surgery, recovery, and long-term ability to continue sports (surfing, mountain biking, hiking). I had not enjoyed surfing for years due to pain. And prior to surgery could not even walk the dog any longer due to bone on bone. I had waited too long, just accepting the pain. 5 months post surgery, my new hip feels stronger than my original. I enjoy pain free surfing, unlimited walking/hiking, and mountain biking is equally enjoyable. My only regret is waiting so long to get the surgery done. He and his team did an outstanding job, They did the surgery in the morning and I was back on my feet and walking (with crutches) by the early afternoon. Stay away from California Pacific Orthopedics and all the doctors there. I was on the phone for more than 55 minutes. Finally I was given an appointment, the doctor spend 2 minutes with me and then got up and left. I didn't get a chance to ask any questions. He looked so upset and annoyed. He didn't make me feel comfortable to ask questions. Then, I emailed my questions, and I was ignored. Furthermore, they don't provide any assistance for people with walking issues. I was told by my chiropractor that I needed a hip replacement after seeing him for what I thought was a nagging pulled groin muscle. My DC had his hip replaced by Dr. Peter Callandar many years ago and was doing just fine. Being an obsessive runner for 32 years and a Shiatsu therapist for 39, I didn't even know I even had a problem with my hip. Shocked at the news and fearing the worst, I went to see Dr.Callandar for a consultation (and the hip surgery, if needed). The MRI did not look promising at all with spurs, impingements and the like but the conservative measures the doctor took with me knowing the nature of my massage work (which is done on the floor ...and also me not wanting to retire even though I am in my 70s) allowed me to AVOID the surgery altogether and live my life without any more hip pain. Its been a whole year now and I have been working, taking great walks where I use to run and even visited Nepal. I am able to resume my full and purposeful life (sans running) happily and pain free. Overview: Dr. Peter Callander's anterior (front) approach with no muscles, tendons, ligaments cut really shortened the recovery. I was able to tie my shoe laces 2-3 days after surgery and could put weight on the surgery side the day of. The pain of my osteoarthritis was gone on the surgery side. I need the right THR too and will go back to Dr. Callander without hesitation. It is now 10 weeks out from surgery, and I waited to make review after seeing it all through. Details: I sought out Dr. Callander because he does the most hip resurfacing surgeries of practically anybody else all along West coast (one other doctor in LA does as many). Since I'm only early 50s, I wanted to do the hip resurfacing surgery, in case I wore out the structure and needed another one later. Dr. Callander's prosthetic he uses can have the cup and ball replaced in a much simpler surgery than traditionally replacing the whole THR structure. I still recommend Dr. Callander for the resurfacing as that's also an option, but the choices I had I liked. Ultimately, I didn't qualify for resurfacing because of pelvic size cutoff. His mastery of anterior total hip replacement is excellent and I don't know how anybody could have done it better. The length match, the rotation angle, the structure sit in the femur sheath are all good. He used propofol and ketamine with spinal, which is safer than general anesthesia. (Good feeling too). The one criticism I have is that his support staff seems overworked and understaffed: it was difficult to contact to confirm appointment times, ask questions, and such. They got it done, but there were some close shaves and worries with timely replies. read more

I've been a very active and athletic person all my life. In recent years my main physical activities have been cycling, swimming, gym, hiking, and ice hockey. A few years ago I developed pain in one hip, then the other. I had to stop playing hockey; could do only limited hiking and only on painkillers; and had to stop certain gym exercises. Then it became very painful to even walk and then I had constant pain in any position. I was planning to do regular full hip replacement until I learned about Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR), which preserves almost all of your femur; is more ergonomically natural; and less prone to dislocation than total hip replacement. I looked for surgeons and was referred to Dr. Peter Callander at California Pacific Orthopedics in San Francisco. The person who referred me was also very active and said his hips were "100%" after his surgeries. I decided to have him do the surgery, and I am so glad I made that decision. I had my first BHR surgery in January 2024. The recovery is not a walk in the park, but after a few weeks my hip felt quite good. All the joint pain was gone. I am now about 10 weeks post-surgery and that hip feels just about normal. I still have a ways to go before resuming all the activities I want to do, but I can do a lot now. So I am thrilled with the result of the first surgery. Dr. Callander did the same BHR surgery on my other hip in March 2024. I am now 2-weeks after the second surgery, which seems like a miracle. I only had to use a crutch for a few days. I'm now walking almost completely normally with no crutch and no painkillers. I've been able to start gym exercises and cycling on a stationary bike, although I am very careful about stressing the hip joint. One difference between the recovery period for the two surgeries is that I iced all the time for about 5 days after the second surgery -- even when I went to bed. I iced a lot after the first surgery but did it even more after the second. I think that really helped my recovery. However, the important common denominator in both surgeries was the surgeon. Obviously the patient can't see what is done during surgery, but the my outcomes indicate that Dr. Callander is a fantastic surgeon. This is a very invasive surgery involving cutting a lot of muscle and ligaments; detaching your leg at the hip; and doing a bunch of carpentry, for lack of a better word, on the head of your femur and your hip socket. For me to come out of all that and have my hips feel this good after just a few weeks tells me that Dr. Callander is a very skilled surgeon. He has done many, many of these BHR surgeries -- I believe over a thousand. I would strongly urge anyone considering this surgery not to do it with someone who has not already done hundreds of these. I also encourage anyone who has hip arthritis and wants to be highly active to choose BHR surgery over standard total hip replacement, which involves removing a significant length of the femur and replacing it with a metal spike with a smaller head than the BHR surgery. And I highly recommend Dr. Callander. Skilled surgeon and a good guy. Dr. Callander's team was also great. Three people I will mention: Jada, his surgery scheduler; Johnna, his physician assistant, who is present during the surgery; and Irma, his medical assistant. They were all extremely helpful and efficient, without any of that fake "customer service" politeness that is so annoying to people who just want results instead of pandering. Some advice for people considering this surgery: 1. Be in the best physical condition you can before the surgery, meaning muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. All that will help your recovery. 2. Ice nearly constantly (meaning 20 minutes on; 20 minutes off) for 5 days or more after surgery. After that, ice several times a day, and always after therapy and/or exercise. Ice, ice, ice. It will greatly help your recovery. 3. Stay ahead of the pain. Right after the surgery, you will be full of strong painkillers that they give you during the surgery. (I'm not sure but I think they inject it in and around the joint.). So you may not have a lot of pain right after the surgery. But don't let that fool you. About a day after the surgery you will be hit with a lot of pain. Take the painkillers, including the heavy stuff, before that pain hits. I made the mistake of not doing that after my first surgery, and got into an awkward position getting out of a vehicle because the pain prevented me from supporting myself. I strained the repair a bit and was in a lot of pain over the next several days. So stay ahead of, and on top of the pain. It will prevent you from getting out of position and allow you to do the modest exercises in the days after the surgery, which help your recovery. read more

Dr. Callander performed anterior full-hip replacement early on in the pandemic. He is an exceptional surgeon. The moment I met him, I was at ease and knew I was in the right hands. The surgery went very well (although he said my hip was in worse condition than he expected from the xrays). I was securely walking on my own without crutches, up and down stairs within 10 days. All the pain is gone, the scar has almost disappeared, and I'm back doing yoga again after having to give it up for 3 years. Post op (hip replacement) I had spinal leakage which created headaches, vertigo - unsettling. Unfortunately, both Dr. Callander and his physician assistant (Jana Walker) left town for two weeks. This was never communicated and I had to fend for myself. Luckily the anaesthesiologist was available and took care of me. Since surgery (almost 6 months ago) I have had constant numbness in my leg and foot. Callander's response was to blame it on my back. I had multiple tests done on my back - negative. I had to remind Dr. Callander that these conditions never existed before surgery. Rather than accept responsibility and entertain the prospect that something with surgery didn't work (an impingement on a nerve, for example, which is not uncommon, unfortunately) he has continued to look for other excuses. I have been after him for weeks to please recommend some alternatives to alleviate this annoying, incessant tingling and pain in my new hip. Crickets. Nice guy. I am very pleased with the results obtained by Dr. Callander's hip resurfacing surgery on my right hip. Whereas, before, I couldn't walk 200 yards without pain in my right hip and was precluded from most all activities due to the pain involving hip joint motion, now, I am able to walk and hike long distances, run, golf, play Frisbee, and ride my Goldwing motorcycle without any pain. Let me tell you a little about my case. I am a 74 year old male. My right hip joint had developed osteoarthritis because of overuse from pitching for over 10 years and, subsequently, driving golf balls on driving ranges for another 20 years. The diagnosis of osteoarthritis of my hip was very surprising to me; I thought the pain on the front of my hip was probably muscular. I ceased driving golf balls and spent 17 years walking with a limp for 4 miles as my only form of exercise. However, as these 17 years progressed, I began to feel pain after shorter and shorter walking distances until I reached ~200 yards total distance. At this point, I figured it was finally time to try to get rid of the pain and try to resume normal activities. I consulted with three surgeons in the U.S. who are well-respected hip resurfacing surgeons and decided on Dr. Callander; Dr. Callander was very knowledgeable, confident, and personable. You will find him the same. After the surgery, I asked Johnna Walker, Dr. Callander's surgical assistant, what my hip joint looked like. Johnna said that it was in very bad shape; in fact, in the presurgical Xray, one could see that it was much deteriorated with many osteophytes on the periphery but that didn't faze Dr. Callander's confidence in his ability to provide me with a normal hip joint. Dr. Callander did an amazing job of resurrecting my right hip joint, and I am thankful to him for the awesome result. Post surgery I was surprised that there wasn't much pain. I took none of the Oxycodone that was prescribed and only took Tylenol for the first three days or so. Even when the nurses walked me up and down rehab stairs several hours after surgery in the Surgery Center, I felt that I could walk unaided. I thought that discretion was the better part of valor, however, and used a walker for the first several days. On the second day after surgery, I was imbued with confidence when walking up a grade with the walker to a park that I was going to walk around--my hip joint felt completely normal with no pain at all. The next day I was walking without a walker and within a week I was walking normally, and without pain, for 3 miles. The most pain that I felt was when I flexed my right hip in order to raise my leg and swing it into a car. For the first couple of weeks, I used a leg-lifter-strap to assist with this raising and swinging. Within three weeks, however, that particular stiffness and pain lessened so that I was able to drive a car. From there, my progress was steady and quick. One final thought is that you will want to perform your physical therapy religiously so that you reestablish the flexibility and strength for flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction in your new hip joint provided by Dr. Callander. read more

Kudos to Dr. Peter Callandar! Who would have thought that I would ever need hip surgery at 40 years old? Well, it so happens that I did, and I am so glad that I got it done! Dr. Callander performed a total hip replacement on my right hip. The entire process from first conslultation, to surgery, to follow up has been a pleasant experience. The wait time in the office can be long, but well worth the wait. His staff is very knowledgeable, attentative, and responsive to your needs. The facility that he operates in is top notch and cutting edge. His anterior approach was minimally evasive and fast healing. The scar is only 5 inches long. The surgery was performed in the morning, and I was scheduled to stay one night in the hospital after the surgery. However, after a couple of hours after waking up from the surgery, I was up and out of bed and walking around on crutches. I didn't even stay the night at the hospital, I left after a delicious dinner and went home, which is amazing! I felt no pain at all immidiately following the surgery. I felt some moderate pain for the next two days and very little pain for the first week. After the first week I experienced zero pain, but a little discomfort and soarness in my leg muscles. The entire recovery process has been pretty painless and fast. The physical therapist came to my house several times for a couple of weeks. I was able to walk with only one crutch by the second week and no crutches at all after three weeks. By the 4th week I was back on my motorcycle and doing my normal routines. Instead of getting extra physical therapy, I continued to do the excercises previously given to me and walk daily. After about 3 months I felt about 90% recovered and it has now been 4 months and I feel about 95% recovered. For the last 2 months I have been hiking almost 50 miles a week and it feels great to be back to my normal self! Dr. Callander's professionalism is top tier. His skill sets are beyond comprehension. I saw Dr. Callander after an MRI showed I had stress fractured my hip. He walked me through healing and taking a measured approach to getting back to a high level of sports activities with a non-surgical approach to try and postpone any need for surgery due to my age (55). We gave the hip every chance with anti-inflammatory, PT and rest. After raising activity levels slightly it fractured again confirming surgery was needed. I received an anterior approach, full hip replacement knowing I had tried the more conservative option. Dr. Callander made me feel 100% comfortable and confident in my choice and with the expected outcomes. The facility is incredible. Dr. Callander and the team were incredibly helpful throughout the process of my anterior hip replacement. I am a 45 year old former gymnast, so some combo of bad genetics (the hip joint was not well shaped) and wear and tear left me with constant hip pain. The anterior approach had me up and walking (with crutches for balance) the same day, and as Dr. Callander promised, I was home and sitting for dinner that same evening. I was walking easily without support within a few weeks and back at the gym in six weeks, but could have gone back sooner. Six months out, everything is working as it should and there is no pain. This is an overdue note of gratitude for Dr. Callander. For over three years my mom (her whole life fit and active) suffered from knee pain which multiple doctors and surgeons couldn't diagnose nor provide the solutions we were desperately seeking. It was incredibly sad seeing the toll it took on her lifestyle and mental health. Finally we made it to California Pacific Orthopaedics where Dr. Belzer immediately understood the cause (hip), confirmed it through X-rays (which no other doctor/surgeon bothered checking) and finally validated and humanized her pain. He immediately redirected my mom to Dr. Callander whose knowledge, professionalism and astuteness confirmed the situation. Two weeks later on the day of the surgery he was confident, comforting and fully enthusiastic to get my mom back on her feet. Her recovery was incredibly smooth and her scar nearly non existent. Dr. Callander's support was truly invaluable throughout this process. He is an outstanding surgeon and person and we are forever grateful to him for restoring my mom's wellbeing. In 2020 I had knee surgery by Dr. Callander. A week after the surgery my knee was infected. He had the audacity to blame me for the infection and said that I probably had an infected knee prior to surgery. During pre-op and the blood tests they should know that. Subsequently he prescribed Bactrim which didn't work. For months he refused to change the medication and my infection got worse. When I asked him what might happen if he can't control the infection he very bluntly said: we may have to amputate your leg if a temporary knee replacement with anti-biotics doesn't work. He put a temporary knee in and 3 months later a permanent one. What a horrific year, with 3 surgeries in 9 months. None of my friends would come see me because of Covid. When I went for my last visit I mentioned how swollen my knee still is and how painful and that I could barely make it to his office. He replied: well, you are here. I am speechless on all the good reviews he has gotten. I would never recommend him. He has ruined my quality of life, for sure. read more

I will always be grateful that my general M.D. referred me to Dr. Callander. I agree with every 5 Star review posted here. His work is perfection. His three coordinators are also wonderful to work with. Every aspect of the surgery is laid out in detail with clear instructions on who to deal with for all pre-op, surgery, and post-op preparations and self-care. Peter Callander has renewed my youth! After a partial knee replacement in 2009 on my left and a complete replacement on my right February of 2021, as a 66 year old female, I now have a pair of knees of a ten year old. He resolved all pain in both knees and has fully restored function in both. I can actually run again which I probably haven't been able to do for over 20 years! Plus he is a total pleasure to be with. Fabulous patience and bedside manner. I cannot recommend Dr Callander enough! read more
