What at first I feared was an assembly line approach in this practice to the high demand for hip surgery in my generation, turned out to be an efficient and educational administration - with little left to chance - in Dr. Mayle's practice. Despite a heavy patient load, he was available as needed from my first pre-surgical inquiries through surgery and post-op a year later. Dr. Mayle inspires confidence and is extremely knowledgeable, precise and personable. He fields all questions respectfully, calms fears, is candid and has a nice bedside manner that one wonders why more surgeons can't have. The process itself is well-orchestrated with patient videos by Dr. Mayle, pre-habilitation (do it; it makes a difference after), a bedside consult immediately before and after surgery, post-op calls by the knowledgeable PA and Dr. Mayle, on line physical therapy tracking. a 3-week post-op PA visit, a 3 month post-op doctor visit, and finally a year later check. The at home PT (Sutter) and (although difficult to reserve), outpatient PT (Presidio) were excellent. This ortho practice understands the connection between psychological and physical health and healing, by being supportive and providing perspective on the healing process. And did I forget to say that, despite the protracted healing process, it is very nice to have mobility, less pain and resumption of pre-deterioration activities with a new state of the art hip. read more

Hip Replacement Walk, don't run (of course, you probably can't since you probably need a new hip or knee) to get an appointment with Dr. Mayle (and his PA, Sally Liu). I "left" UCSF and had my total hip replacement with Dr. Mayle. He is a rock star! From the first appointment w/Sally to surgery with Dr. Mayle (Oct. 5, 2023), every single person in his sphere was amazing. He replaced my very compromised hip as outpatient surgery at the Presidio Surgery Center (which was also awesome) and all went very well. The surgery was a complete success and my recovery is going so well--almost no pain and every day I am recovering mobility that eluded me for almost a year. I had my right hip replaced by Dr. Mayle in November, 2021, using the anterior approach, which I highly recommend. By February I was skiing in Utah, although not at my full potential because my left hip was deteriorating. In March 2022 I had my left hip replaced. Both procedures went super smoothly and I was out of the hospital after 1 overnight stay. I'm so much more mobile and active now and looking forward to the next ski season! I've had both hips replaced by Dr. Mayle and both are doing great. The first was done about a year and a half ago, 4 1/2 weeks before a trip to Milan. I healed so well, and found myself dancing at a private event with no pain, no meds and had a blast. I'm now healing from the second one and have been walking over 4 miles with no pain and no meds. Dr. Mayle has the process "down". I found his bedside manner to be just perfect. He listens, is very upbeat and answers all questions thoroughly. He's a nice guy and I highly recommend him. Awesome Doctor for Hip replacements. He does Anterior approach. I've had both done - posterior approach on the left side; then anterior approach by Dr Mayle on the right side. Anterior to was half the pain and half the healing time Never ler one of the many outdated Ortho surgeons recommend and do a posterior hip replacement. Dr. Mayle is my hero! I lived in pain for so many years, afraid of surgery. I knew that I couldn't handle out patient surgery. He does both outpatient in Marin and inpatient too, if you feel that you need the support of a hospital stay, as I did. Most surgeons lead with their ego. They are cold and not known for their bedside manner. I really needed a caring person to guide me through this process. Dr. Mayle is kind and concerned every step of the way. He assured me that he would take care of me and help me. And he did! I don't even know how to rate a surgeon. It is an inconceivable profession to me. Here do I start Prior to meeting with Dr Mayle, I spent nearly two years in agony trying to determine the source of my serve groin pain. I had seen countless doctors at the so-called world class medical facilities the San Francisco Bay I even flew out to Philadelphia to see a groin specialist. They all said that I was not a textbook case hip replacement candidate no total bone on bone arthritis. OK was what is the problem why can't I walk without serious pain? They had no answers after two years? I was hopeless, lost nearly everything tens of thousands of doctors' bills needless hernia surgery, injections, Mris no walking no barefoot waterskiing etc had to sell my home to live on the equity I was beyond depressed. Screw it I thought, why not just get this thing cut off. So, I consulted with Dr Mayle in the hopes that he might do a hip replacement. Prior to coming in the examination room Dr Mayle had already reviewed my x-rays and Mris. He then proceeded to do a physical examination to check the range of motion of the hip. There was just something about the way he truly listened and could see it in his eyes that he and he alone was the first doctor got what I was going through. He went on the explain that while am not your typical hip replacement candidate he could help. I mean, ever see a grown man weep? We scheduled to have the hip replacement on November the 8th2021 6 months ago tomorrow. The surgery that day was a breeze, if I remember right about 1 hour. They were nice enough to let me spend the night as I had no one at the house. But believe I could have easily gone home the same day, they instead had me stay and order up all the fancy dinners that you can order. Once home, I was getting around the house on crutches making my own meals, showering etc. There was a bit of pain only took the narcos for three days. By day four was just taking Tylenol and some other pills to prevent blot clots etc. They had a nurse come out to check on me and do light physical therapy she was in awe that I did not have any nasty bruising or swelling. I had my follow up, I believe like two weeks later I saw Dr Mayle's (PA) Ruth Kernshaw she noted that I was no longer hobbling around still on crutches but pain free at last. I told her that getting a root canal in my case was tougher. I could not believe I really had a hip replacement done, I mean, I only have a three inch scar, Oh the nurse that came out could not believe how nicely and a quickly that healed up. I think it was about three months post operation I went back in again to see Dr Mayle for follow-up I walked in no limp, no pain no limp. Dr Mayle again with the nice caring eyes listened to how happy I was, I asked when you think I might be able to barefoot waterski again he said lets wait for 12 months. Today am walking as far I want, five-mile hikes uphill are not a problem am back to gym do my leg exercises with moderate weight. I don't even think about the hip anymore. He saved my life because of him I am happy today living life. He is truly a kind, skillful surgeon. I have shown my scar to friends and family and they are in awe??? how is it possible he was able to get the implant into such a small incision? I'm nearly 3 weeks post-op for full right knee replacement and could not be more pleased with Dr. Mayle's surgical abilities, as well as his caring & kindness. I would be stretching to say I ever experienced pain at a '5' on a scale of 10, post-op. I'd describe my post-op pain as the dull ache type, possibly about a '3', but even that has been fleeting. I moved from a walker to a cane by Day 6, was on a stationary bike by Day 7, and at about 2-1/2 weeks post-op felt like I'd moved from being an invalid to considerably less impaired. I'm still using the cane as insurance, but feel strong and balanced. I can tell the operation is going to be a great success -- that my previously tortured knee (which was -10 degrees of extension, and was 5 degrees bow-legged) will once again allow me to hike and do yard work pain free. My other great source of satisfaction concerning Dr. Mayle has been finding out how highly regarded he is by those he works with -- nurses, in-home physical therapists and out-patient physical therapists. I know a fair number of nurses and PT's who complain about the arrogance of many doctors with whom they work. It corroborated my own sense of Dr. Mayle's kindness and caring to hear others (particularly women) express their appreciation and high regard for him. I can't say enough good things about the treatment I have received from Dr Mayle and his staff. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with moderate arthritis in both hips, and 2 orthopedic doctors immediately recommended hip replacement surgeries. Dr Mayle was open to exploring other options first, and after a couple of cortisone shots and some Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, I have been able to play tennis 3-4x a week. I feel so fortunate that I found Dr. Robert Mayle. Due to two separate injuries in the past, both of my hips were bone-on-bone and showed severe osteoarthritis. One or two months before surgery I could barely walk without heavy pain medications and I was extremely desperate. When I had my first appointment with him, I immediately felt comfortable to choose him as my surgeon. He is personable, focused, professional and caring! Despite his young age, he is a star at CPMC and he is known for his exquisite and impeccable work with the minimally invasive anterior hip replacement technique. It is a new, advanced approach which reduces the recuperation time to 1/3. No muscles are cut or detached and the risk of dislocation for the rest of your life is practically zero (as opposed to the posterior approach). In February 2018 he replaced both of my hips at the same time and I stayed at the hospital for 4 nights. After about 1 1/2 weeks, I already walked without any assistive devices and after 3 weeks I already did 1 hour walks in the park with my Nordic Walking sticks. I had had a leg-length discrepancy and he elongated my shorter leg so that I would be perfectly symmetric. Being a Rolfer, I could only assume what perfect alignment might feel like and in the past I knew how to cue someone theoretically, but I never felt it kinesthetically myself. When I stood up for the first time after surgery - it felt like a miracle!!! I really have to say that if I ever need my knees replaced, Dr. Mayle would DEFINITELY will be my surgeon. I trust him completely! Also, the staff at CPMC is outstanding and during my entire time there I felt that I was in competent, caring hands. Five stars to the surgeon as well as the entire staff! Dr. Mayle and his team performed anterior bilateral hip replacement. Basically he replaced both of my within two days of each other. Three weeks later I was back at work. I was in tremendous pain prior to that. I had no idea how much longer I could stand the pain even while being on pain meds. I credit him and his staff with saving my life. I switched to Dr. Robert Mayle from Dr. Nicholas Mast who had done my right hip in 2014 because of several very important reasons: Dr. Mayle is engaging from the get go! He listens, discusses, asks questions, remembers what you tell him and what your concerns are. Dr. Mayle is like no other surgeon I have worked with, he is so present in the process that I was at ease. I had some trouble with the first hip replacement by Dr. Mast and was hoping to avoid having the same issues with the second replacement. Dr. Mayle listened and discussed with me the issues with the first replacement...then he used the word "geometry" --- I was sold. I am now 8 weeks out from the surgery and am doing really well with my progress. If Dr. Mayle is wrong about something he will tell you immediately, and apologize. He appears to be fascinated with new things and new answers --- he has no trouble at all letting go of any preconceived notions he might have had. 6. Dr. Mayle has done hip replace surgery on three people I know all of them are very pleased with the results. This doctor cares about his patients. He works hard to figure out how best to help them, and he talks about everything he observes, considers, and figures out, plus his thoughts and proposals about what to do about the problems, with the patient, asking the patient for input all along the way. Dr. Mayle performed anterior hip surgery on my right hip. I'm a 70 year old woman in ok good shape and weight. I was in excruciating pain before the surgery. Could barely walk without the aid of crutches. I was scared about the surgery and the recovery time it included. Dr. Mayle is very talented and everything he explained to me about the surgery was spot on. Within one week I went from walker to cane and by the second week I didn't need anything although the PT said I should still use a cane when I went out but I really didn't need it. I went to see him after having a hip replacement performed by another surgeon, which resulted in my muscles being terribly inflamed. Dr. Mayle gave me a prednisone injection to try and calm the muscles down, which unfortunately didn't work. (It doesn't always). But I appreciated his kindness and understanding, as I have a horror of needles, and he handled the whole thing in such a way that I didn't even know he had given me the injection until after it was over. Full marks for that! Though Dr. Mayle told me it would probably take time (perhaps an entire year) for my condition to improve, I feel that he is someone I can trust and whose opinion and advice I can rely on. read more

Just a little update: My dad, who was actually the one who pushed me to get my hip replaced two years ago after his own was such a success, has now gone back to Dr. Mayle for a knee replacement. Everything good and positive that you have heard or read about Dr. Mahle is 100% true. Professionally his skills are exceptional - I was only under for approx. 90 minutes for a hip replacement using the anterior approach. Every a.m. he visits his post op patients starting at 6:00 a.m. He and his staff employ the use of an app where he/they keep in touch with you and give admonitions. When you - the patient - types in comments re: questions/concerns they go straight to his phone. He responds almost immediately. I am 64 years old. I used a walker for one week. Second week I used a cane. Third week I was walking unassisted inside my house. I did work diligently at PT.
