Dr. Cox provided the answers to my questions and the care for my knee condition. The office is busy but fairly organized and I was seen pretty much on time at my appointment time, first by a nurse and then by Dr. Cox. Overall, a good experience. read more

My 82 yo mom had her second knee replacement. The other knee was also done by Dr. Cox in the past, so my mom only wants the absolute best and was willing to drive to SF to go back to him. He is an excellent doctor and he and his practice has an impressive gallery of ballet dancers, stars and football players and other athletes with signed pictures thanking Dr. Cox and his colleagues. So you know you are in good hands! Also great that there is a X-Ray room there to check patients right away to compare how it is before and after- all in one which is convenient for elderly patients especially! Parking lot is connected ( but 12.00 for the hour!). Plenty of street parking as well ( we parked in the lot- no, I didn't make her walk from the street!). Bedside manner is great, following up with family is also very good. Follow-up care is organized and wonderful. He obviously has been doing this long enough with much experience that he is excellent on all points. And those who want the best can be confident Dr. Cox is just that whether to famous individuals or just a regular elderly woman like my mom! We appreciate his care and kindness as well! read more

I have no comment on the quality of Dr. Cox putting my kneecap together in May of 2015 two weeks after it shattered from a fall, since I have no comparison knee surgery to relate it to. This review is about pain management, which was woefully inadequate for this type of surgery. I called Dr. Cox from home the morning after my surgery (after the surgery center administered anesthesia had worn off) to explain the pain to the knee was constantly excruciating despite taking his prescribed Oxycodone/Acetaminophen combination. His advice was that nothing further could be done for pain but recommended adding a higher-than-normal dose of Ibuprofen to the mix. This resulted in a severe stomach-ache because he had not warned me it had to be taken with food. So my knee pain was lessened somewhat while giving me a severe pain in another area. Let this be your warning if you don't like severe pain. read more

I was fortunate enough to get an excellent referral to Dr. Cox back in June of 2019 after learning that I had advanced avascular necrosis in my femoral head joint of my left hip. After visiting with three other specialists before meeting Chris, the instant that I sat down in his office and started to talk with him, I just "knew" (strong gut feeling) he was going to be the right person to perform my hip replacement surgery. He was that and much more. The preparation before surgery went very smooth with good communication from his office. The surgery on 10/2/19, went quite well and all of the hospital staff who took care of me while I was there post surgery were absolutely above & beyond. He connected me to a great PT concierge service in my area (Sonoma County) and I was blessed to have a most wonderful PT who came to my house 2x/week for about 3 months. Her care was exceptional and I firmly believe that the high quality PT care coupled with the super surgery, along with my dedicated intention to really do my PT work, combined to provide me with the solid recovery I experienced. I do have some avascular necrosis in my rip hip. If it were to ever advance to a point where I would need to get it replaced, in a heartbeat I would contact Dr. Cox's office to do the surgery. I sought out Dr. Christopher Cox because I was experiencing considerable pain from arthritis in my hips and he was highly recommended. Dr. Cox felt hip replacement might be my best option, but recommended that I exhaust all alternatives to surgery first. I took his advice and tried specialized exercises, etc, which did not relieve my progressively painful symptoms. I concluded then that this operation was my best option for future wellness and to be able to return to pain-free activities. Two weeks later, I was admitted to the Mission Bernal Hospital, had my operation 2 hours later, and was practicing walking down the hall with a physical therapist by 9PM the same evening. Dr. Cox came by the next morning to check up that everything had gone as well as expected: His bedside manner was at the same time caring and optimistic: He answered my questions, confirmed and clarified my expectations, put me at ease, and said I would be ready to go home the next day, on Friday! In just over 2 weeks since my hip replacement, my recovery progress has been even better than Dr. Cox expected. I am 70+ years old, and I had no idea that such rapid relief from my "Stage 4" arthritis was available. Dr. Christopher Cox is a brilliant orthopedic surgeon and he did my knee replacement last month and has been my ortho doctor for the past few years. My knees have been giving me the blues and I love the fact that Dr. Cox exhausted all other remedies before suggesting surgery - his conservative approach makes me feel confident in his decisions and overall concern for my total health. I have chronic back pain and Dr. Cox is always thoughtful in regards to pain management for me. He doesn't make promises, but tells me the truth which allows me to make informed decisions. While in the hospital last month, I did have another surgeon check on me during the weekend and he made me realize in his rather abrasive manner that God had truly blessed me with a surgeon who is not only skilled, but caring, kind and compassionate. Dr. Cox has never made me feel that any of my concerns were insignificant - he has never minimized my pain. He is patient with me and always considers my overall health when he makes recommendations to me. Added value is Irma who is an absolute jewel - she is thoughtful, helpful and no matter how bad I feel - I always feel better after talking to her. I will never forget the first day I walked in to the Webster Street office, Irma asked how can I help you - I said, I have two bad knees and Irma replied with a smile - you are in the right place! Dr. Cox's entire team is excellent, if you go to the California Street Office you will interact with Gilma who is also very helpful and pleasant. Kim is Dr. Cox assistant and she has been a great deal of help to me - my back was hurting trying to do some of the exercises and Kim gave me some suggestions that really helped to minimize the back pain, but still allowed me to do what is necessary to strengthen my knee. My knee is healing - still stiff and achy, but I am looking forward to complete healing so I can have the other knee replaced by Dr. Cox. By this time next year I expect to be walking without chronic knee pain. I'm at day 17 after a total right knee revision and am amazed at how well all is going; walking without crutches after a week and about two months ahead of the artificial knee that failed after 11 years ago (not done by Dr. Cox). As good as it gets is really a euphemism for Dr. Cox and his great staff (PA Kim and assistant Gilma both terrific). Also the care I received at CPMC joint replacement center was truly kind and compassionate. Dr. Cox is a wonderful surgeon and has a terrific "bedside manner." October 14, 2014 Last night was the first time in the last year of my life that I have been able to move outdoors on the sidewalk without the aid of a wheelchair, walker or cane. What a joy to be able to walk on my own again. To sit down or stand up without pain. To stand tall again at full height and feel balanced and centered. Foot pain last November. Hip and thigh pain in March. Paralyzed and unable to walk by June. Aseptic necrosis of the hips was the diagnosis. My long-time primary physician recommended Dr. Christopher Cox as the surgeon to check out. I did. We met. X-rays were taken. We talked. This was all new to me never having had surgery before. Total hip replacement was recommended. One hip at a time. What he told and showed me made sense to me so I said, "Let's do it." Right hip replaced on June 11, left hip on September 4. It is now October 15 and I am walking on my own again. And I am free of the constant pain I felt all over my body due to my crumbled hips. Cox did it. He's a busy guy but he took the time to answer all my questions, to come see me the day after my surgery, and on the other few days I spent in hospital. He knows his stuff. I can recommend Dr. Cox without hesitation or qualification to anyone with joint problems. Now 4 months post surgery, I could not be happier with the results of my total knee replacement. I was lucky to have experienced the post-surgery pain for one day only, which I attribute in large part to Dr. Cox's precision surgical technique. Moreover, I have been walking pretty much since week 3 quite comfortably without any pain what so ever. Hip surgery gone very wrong: One year after receiving a hip resurfacing from Dr. Cox, the peroneal nerve damage that occurred during the surgery has not healed at all, leaving me partially crippled. The neuropathy caused the muscles in my foot and calf to not function... I now have what is called "foot drop". I cannot walk without a brace; I find it difficult to dress, put on socks, etc. I have obtained a permanent disability status from the state. I declined to file a lawsuit because that action would not restore my leg function. I might have felt slightly better about the whole thing if the doctor had apologized and not given me that quizzical look that says: "Yeah, stuff happens." The specific risk of nerve damage was not included in any of the papers I signed or any of the available literature, or in the interviews with the doctor. I would recommend against this doctor for any surgery. I am aware of hundreds of hip replacement and resurfacing patients who have had entirely successful outcomes. Do I want to take a 50 minute trip on 2 buses to wait _another_ 50 minutes (after my scheduled 10:30 appointment time) to talk to Dr. Cox for literally 3 minutes? Heh, you tell me. Right before he came into the exam room, I overheard Gilma, his lovely assistant, outside the door, inform him that I have been waiting alone in the room for over 50 minutes and he couldn't have said that he didn't really give a sh*t any more clearly. "Does he expect to be seen before everyone else?" he replied. No, but I'd like to be seen around the time I've been scheduled to be seen. Is that really too high of an expectation? I'd also appreciate it if you guys didn't double/triple-book your time slots for the same doctor. How many times do I have to hear "I have a 10:30 with Dr. Cox" while sitting in the waiting room? At least organize it so that brief appointments are seen first--and yes, I was checked in early. Having to wait at a doctor's office is a given, but it'd be sort of, just sort of, nice to have a doctor with the common courtesy to apologize for having me wait for an hour to hear a 3-minute extended take of "Everything is ok." An hour late to the appointment and the first to leave, as well. Not even a verbal farewell or handshake. Quite amazing, I must say. Kudos, and well played, Dr. Cox. Other than my bad experience today and Dr. Cox' condescending attitude, Dr. Cox is a perfectly capable doctor and his assistant, Gilma, is amazing, as well. read more

I cannot say enough nice things about Dr. Cox. Not only does he have a delightful bedside manner, but he takes TIME with you to get to the bottom of your problem. In my case it turned out to be a torn meniscus. Of course I had NO IDEA what that meant, only that it was causing an enormous amount of discomfort at certain times (flap was getting caught between joint... ouch!!) without rhyme or reason. The staff saw to it that I got the proper tests to diagnose problem (x-ray showed nothing....MRI told the story). MRI machine is right on premise (as is x-ray) so it's a one stop shop. Once known Dr. Cox explained to me (drew it and everything!) what was happening. He was so patient and answered all of my questions and told me my options. Just a lovely man. I opted for surgery (outpatient) to remove flap and clean up meniscus. The whole surgical procedure was first rate!!!!! He used the Presidio Surgical Center (and I HIGHLY recommend them!) and the staff was so attentive. Dr. Cox came to see me before the surgery to tell me what to expect and came after to see how I was doing (which was fine!). From the beginning to end it was such a comforting and positive experience. Dr. Cox's surgical skills are second to none. I was literally able to walk the same day as surgery. Obviously, I took all the advice of icing, keeping leg up,keeping compression on it.............But, you know between the pain meds (yes, he chose one that does not make you sick to your stomach) and the great release instructions I had such an easy and quick recovery. I had the surgery on a Thursday and by Tuesday I was back at the dog park with my Rigby. I recommend Dr. Cox for ANY of your orthopedic issues. He is THE BEST!!! You will be in great hands! My surgery date with Dr. Cox was 6/26/10. I had limited movement and pain for about ten years and at 50+ I started researching bay area hip resurfacing surgeons and processes. I had a great experience with the surgery. Dr. Cox is a perfectionist. I know I had tons of questions and I researched everyone in the Bay Area and even looked around the county for the right person to do my surgery. After all my research I realized I wanted the BHR process ... best clinical data to date and I wanted Dr. Cox as my surgeon. I had the surgery ... I was standing up in 24 hours and off all pain meds in 48. Even the scar looked perfect. Each month was a progression and I saw improvement. I did the physical therapy but mostly just walk and healed. I never really rushed my recovery. Now at six months I just got back from my first weekend hitting the slopes at squaw and while sore from skiing hard ... no hip pain. Everything felt fine. I can't say enough about the care I received from Dr Cox. He did an excellent job. He has great communication skills. He is conservative in his approach and he is through. I recommend this procedure and Dr. Cox to anybody that is thinking about hip surgery. It is truly a phenomenal procedure. I am fully pain free. In fact I wake up no longer thinking about my hip or the limitations I used to have. Thank you Dr. Cox. I can highly recommend him to anyone. read more

Starting In November 2011, I began excellent physical therapy which helped alleviate the pain in my right hip, but it wasn't enough. In March 2013, at the recommendation of my internist, I first saw Dr. Cox. Dr. Cox recommended continuing with physical therapy, but eventually having hip replacement surgery. In June 2015, two months ago, I did have the surgery, and my last pain was climbing the steps to the hospital (California Pacific Medical Center) when arriving for surgery. Since the surgery there has been no pain, not even in the hours and days immediately following it. When I saw Dr. Cox last week during a follow-up visit, I asked him how to explain this. His answer was that in his career as an orthopedic surgeon, he has performed over 1,000 hip replacements, and this is reflected in the experience and skills that he brings to this surgery. Both the area of the surgery and the incision have had remarkable healing. It is impossible to give enough praise to reflect how delighted I am with the outcome of his surgery. I went to see Dr. Cox for a 2nd opinion regarding surgery on my hip. When I made the appt., I told them that I had an MRI that was 1-yr old and current x-rays. When I arrived at the appointment (on time) I was told that Dr. Cox was running 15 minutes late. 45 minutes later I was taken into an exam room. After waiting another 45 minutes, Dr. Cox sauntered into the room, and with no greeting -- not an introduction or even 'hello' he started to review my information. He then proceeded to ask me questions about my hip, pain, physical constraints, etc. After about 10 minutes of discussion he proclaimed that I needed another MRI in order for him to make a good assessment. When I started to ask questions, he told me to go get the MRI and make a follow-up appointment, then he walked out of the room as rudely as he entered. He never even gave me any kind of physical examination, but of course the bill arrived within days charging $312 for the 10-minute discussion (maybe they're charging me for my waiting time too). Dr.Cox is arrogant and rude. I have no idea what his surgical skills are, but I know that I want a doctor who listens to me, examines me thoughtfully and thoroughly and has some ability to communicate with me effectively. Cox demonstrated NONE of that. The practice is clearly focused on generating revenue. They (of course want you to use their referal to obtain MRI (I'm sure there is a financial incentive for them). They think nothing of making a patient wait 1-1/2 hours to see a doctor--not even the slightest apology was offered. I would strongly advise anyone against seeing Christopher Cox or using Pacific Orthopedics. read more

Dr. Cox performed a full hip replacement on me (right side only). The surgery went very well, they got my leg length as good as I could possibly hope for, and I'm well on my way to recovery. I was having terrible pain in my Rt knee for the longest time- I ended up having my knee replaced by Dr Cox and his assistant Kimberly and they do incredible work together. I have to say he is simply a brilliant orthopedic surgeon. They also took the time to close the incision with care and concern which made for rapid healing and minimal scarring Whenever I had any questions or problems, Gilma his office manager would get right on it for me. Dr. Cox and i are growing old together, me faster than he is. For almost 25 yard he has treated my arthritic hands, knees, two surgeries and currently a bad hip. I wouldn't see anyone else. He makes me laugh, rarely makes me wait and so far has made me better. I think he is outstanding and his assistant Gilma is a gem. I had a botched shoulder surgery by someone else only because he doesn't do shoulders so I am able to compare surgeons. He is the best in my book. read more

They have a self imposed rule that they do NOT treat any vehicle accident victims for fear of being call to court to give a truthful account that could help a victim. I've heard that this guy is a good surgeon, but the way I was treated by the incompetent staff, the fact that he triple books appointments so that I was waiting an hour and 15 mins past my appointment time...or hmmm..was it that the receptionist actually forgot that my chart was there and I was waiting? Either way, I was lied to from the outset. Add to that the fact that this doctor doesn't have the most basic of manners to say hello and introduce himself to me. I ended up having my surgery done by someone else - who was nice, polite, his staff was organized and efficient. If I'm going to spend thousands of dollars, experience a lot of pain and lose a lot of income to have a knee replaced, the least a surgeon and his staff can do is treat a patient with respect. Dr Cox has performed 2 total knee replacements on me and he is a super surgeon. My surgeries were 7 years apart and each time his staff and Dr. Cox were first rate. You want a surgeon with experience and good bedside manner is an additional plus. I always felt I was in good hands and the great result I got shows I was not wrong. Dr, Cox is probably a competent surgeon; however he and his staff fall short of follow up and care for anything that is out of the ordinary following knee surgery. The side effects from the pain meds prescribed for me to take at home were constant nausea and dizziness - so I couldn't take them. When I called the office, I was screened from talking to the surgeon, was told that everyone gets sick and another similar pain pill was suggested. I researched that pill and saw it had the same nausea side effects so I requested an anti nausea drug as well as a pill for sleep aid. This took three days of unreturned phone calls, very nasty VMs from me to get someone's attention and culminated in a pharmacy request being placed late Friday before a long holiday weekend. The new pain pill was OKd but the nausea med and the sleeping pill had insurance questions. My report of problems and the final filing of the requested pills took 7 days where I was forced to see what overthecounter meds I could use to combat pain nausea and now dizziness. With lack of results from Dr. Cox, I called my GI and GP doctor who responded to me over the holiday whereas there was no way to reach Dr. Cox. He misread two sleep meds suggested by the insurance co and didn't respond making me ultimately just pay out of pocket to get my prescriptions filled. So the pain management and side effects were handled by me and my other doctors. I lost early walking and pt time soley because of the side effects that were not resolved by the surgeon's office. There was a condescending air around all the requests to deal with my med issues rather than a calm, practical discussion of possible alternatives and the ability to have contact with my surgeon to address these ongoing issues. Update - the final insult. I had to cancel my post-op appointment due to lack of sleep and nausea. One week later, I hadn't heard from the doctor's office. When I called to reschedule (which could only be arranged by the medical assistant), I was advised that I would have to be squeezed in with other patients. What category had I joined - I wondered - other than patient. I was offered one time only for the whole week. That time conflicted with my physical therapy which is booked long in advance. So I was scheduled for the following week with the admonition that I was being squeezed in so it was better the earlier I arrived. What an interesting position for a post-surgery PATIENT. read more

I am writing to second all those who provided positive feedback on Dr. Cox. I think he is absolutely brilliant. About 17 years ago I went to see him because at the time he was the only Orthopedic Surgeon who would even consider replacing my hips due to my young age. He agreed to perform the surgeries although they were complicated because I've had several before and not much bone material left. To make a long story short, he did a fabulous job that allowed me to live virtually pain-free all these years. I found Dr. Cox to be very caring in the way that was important to me. Unlike every other surgeon I had seen, he understood that I wanted to live an active life and not remain immobilized by pain until I was an old woman. Back then everybody else recommended I wait until my mid-sixties. Whenever I saw Dr. Cox he was pleasant and had a great sense of humor. Nice and helpful staff, no long wait times, all my questions were answered professionally and to my satisfaction. When I asked how long I might enjoy my new hardware he gave me about 7 years. throughout the years after surgery I did not have any problems worth complaining about. I worked, walked, hiked, cycled, lifted weights - though not too heavy as per his recommendations back then. The only thing I could not do was run. I contacted Dr. Cox again a few months ago to let him know I got the 7 years and 10 more and to thank him for the gift he gave me. He remembered me right away and was happy to hear from me. He recommended I get some x-rays done soon to see whether the liners in the joints where still holding up. I followed his advice and will have to have them replaced soon.
