Where do I even start!!!! Absolutely amazing locally ran business! We have done two trips with Kauai camper van and love everything they do! Two years ago we had Ginger (white) and this year we had Patsy. I believe there is no better way to see al Kauai has to offer then in a camper van from Kauai Camper! Pack super light because the van has everything. We paid an extra $7 for the week for a French press for coffee... worth it!!! A hammock rental was also awesome! We left a 4 star review a few months ago detailing all our pros and cons, truthfully this just isn't a 5 star company. We've rented campers in Oahu, Maui, Japan, New Zealand, etc and this was company is simply not a 5 star company. Very money oriented and a lot of rules/"don't do" list...which is fine of course but we've just had better experiences with camper companies elsewhere. Rented a rooftop camper that was filled with roaches. The roaches were in the bedding bin so I don't know if the bedding was washed between customers. They say "roaches are everywhere on the island" but other people we met who rented from other companies didn't have this issue. Also, the roaches were all different sizes/stages of life so there's a breeding ground somewhere where this business is located. And we did not take pictures of all the roaches crawling everywhere because we don't want that to be our memory of this beautiful island. What is making me make a new lower review is because of this scam: they promise a $20 credit if you leave a review. We leave an honest 4 star review. They call to ask us to change our review to a 5 star review and incentivize us with another $30. They don't follow up on their promise! Just finishing up a week rental of "Patsy" and had an incredible journey with her all around the island. I highly recommend it to adventurous people who don't mind roughing it a bit - the freedom the Campervan gives you is worth it. It is reasonably priced and has everything you need for campervan camping. I'm going to offer some advice on how to make the best out of the rental because I had to learn the hard way but then I became a master at how to make the most of Patsy and we had a really awesome journey together. First of all - DO YOUR RESEARCH! Tripadvisor has a lot of good forums on camping in Kauai. I did not do this research and I was not really prepared and had to learn as I went along. MOST IMPORTANTLY: there are no county or state parks in Kauai that allow you to sleep overnight in your campervan. So even though you may get a permit to camp, you are not legally allowed to sleep overnight in the van - you have to set up a tent and sleep in that which seems like eating the purpose of having the van. The first night I stayed in Anahola Park I didn't realize this and I was nonchalant about getting up and out before the Ranger came around. He informed me that it is illegal to sleep in the campervan. Josh said that it was very rare for this to happen - lucky me! I drove to the other side of the island to Saltpond where I had a permit for five nights but when I got there it was so crowded and hot and a police officer told me it wasn't safe to camp! I freaked out on poor Josh saying I had nowhere to stay and was homeless! I think it was because I was traveling alone and I was still uptight just arriving here. Josh was super patient and kind and helped me make a reservation at the private Kumu Campground at Anahola where they let you sleep in your van. Kumu is a great spot to make base camp for exploring the north side of the island. I recommend booking campsites as early as possible as they get booked up. The sites near the ocean are the best. Be prepared for locals at the beach having parties and making noise - this is their home and we are guests. Noise never lasted long and I slept really well there. Donna the camp hostess is super friendly and helpful and the hot showers are a great treat! I met a few locals at the great Tiki Iniki bar in Princeville one of whom said he had to live in his car for a few months when he first moved to the island. He said the trick to sleeping in your car at beach parks is "In at 10, up by 5" meaning - don't set up your van like you are going to sleep in it until 10 pm when the Rangers have gone home and get up early so if they come by you can just say you just got there. People get up really early in Hawaii and go to the beach so this is totally reasonable. Many other people I met camping in cars or vans confirmed this strategy but quite frankly I stayed at the Pine Trees Beach Park in Hanalei for several days with no problem and that was awesome! I went to sleep at dusk and was up at dawn and slept really well. One night there was a lough party with awful music so I moved down the road to another park. You can't do that with a hotel room! The advantage of staying at a beach park is that the bathrooms never shut down and they are services every day and pretty clean. There are only cold outside showers and that gets a little old because its hard to get all the sand off but again, totally worth it. Warning about Haena - word is that when they open the road you have to get a reservation ahead of time TO PARK and they will enforce that strictly as they are trying to keep traffic to a low to help maintain restoration of the area after the flood. I would do extensive research into that before coming but that is definitely worth the homework. Be prepared for change! I met several other Kauai Campervan renters on my journey who also loved their Campervans but one couple had booked a stay in Koke'e State Park but fire closed it down. The good news is that it is easy to find a place to park and camp. If you can park near a park with a bathroom - that is all the better. Finally, I LOVED driving Patsy around - she is a GREAT beast - so much more better than driving a rental car. People think you are a local and flash you a shaka when you cruise by! if you are surfer you can pile the boards on the top. The only problem I had with Patsy is that the locks on the back door and sliding door where funky and it was frustrating at times when I couldn't get them to lock. I recommend that they replace the locks before the next renter takes her out for a journey. Last Word: Learn the history of this island nation and the culture of the indigenous Hawaiian people BEFORE coming here. Hawaii is an illegally occupied sovereign nation that was stolen from the Kingdom of Hawaii. Get some EAducation and tread lightly on the island paradise! Aloha will enrich your trip and your life! This is by far the best way to experience Kauai! We had so much fun rolling around the island in our home-on-wheels (Kukui) for a week and didn't want to leave. The van was equipped with two beds, a stove, sink, and cooler, so we had everything we needed and never had to pack/unpack between our destinations since our rental vehicle doubled as a hotel room on wheels. We also loved how beautiful the van was (especially with the cool pop-top) for photos. It's hard to find these retro vans, especially in such good shape. Sarah and Josh were fantastic renters and gave us all the best tips for camping spots, markets (massive avocados!), snorkeling, and catching sunsets. We had a great trip. Sarah and Josh are great hosts and very responsive. While this may not be for everyone, it was perfect for our family of (2 adults and 2 kids ages 8 and 3). We started the trip in Janie and after 3 days, we had a minor electrical issue, Sarah and Josh drove to meet us and swapped her out for Kukui. We knew exactly what we signed up for when we jumped into this type of trip so this slight delay was nothing but that... a slight delay. Once swapped, we were on our way again. No problems! Our family just had a great time in Kauai traveling all over in "Ruby Tuesday!" Our family of 4 (2 parents/2 kids aged 7 and 9) fit great in the camper. We camped on the North, East, and South shores as well as hit the mountains for a couple of days at Koke'e State park! Josh and Sara were great to work with, super prompt, very communicative, and they take amazing care of their campers! We are travelers and have camped in just about any kind of camper and this was by far the easiest kind for take down/set up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! What a great experience! We rented one of Bob and Cheryl's vans for the last 2 days of our trip, after spending a week in a rental house. The van was delivered immaculately clean and fully stocked with everything you need to live in comfort at the beach... even beach chairs! It ran great and was a pleasure to drive around the island. They are professional, accommodating and know a lot about the island. What an amazing experience! Cheryl and Bob are top notch folks! From the very beginning of our inital contact to when she happily greeted us at the airport. Cheryl was exremely helpful, relaxed and a pleasure to meet. She and Bob went above and beyond by not only helping us get to our marriage license appointment in time but stocking our cooler with some amazing farmer's market produce and snacks. My fiance and I rented their Westfalia, Patsy, for the week for our honeymoon. We camped along the north shore right near the beach. Awesome! The VW camper van was the perfect way to see Kauai for the whole family. We have a 15 month old and almost 4 year old - who LOVED everything about the van. It was so nice to be able to pull over where ever to let the kids play, eat, nap or just relax. The van was clean, comfortable and stocked with everything imaginable to make the stay perfect. I love staying in resorts, but this was really unique and I feel it was easier to see more of the island at a relaxing pace when we didn't have to start from the same point each day. Also - Kauai's towns are all so close that we could still eat out conveniently so we didn't have to cook all the time if we didn't want to. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE! We have had our trip planned for the past month and talked with Bob yesterday about when we would be arriving tomorrow and when they would need to pick us up. We told him we had 4 people and a surfboard bag and that we would be arriving around 1:30. During this time, you can hear his wife in the background, "We have to be somewhere at 2!" Then this morning we received 3 emails in a row saying they had refunded our trip followed up by a rude, snotty call from Cheryl (the wife) saying, "There is no way you can fit 4 people and all that stuff legally in our van!" WOW. Would have been nice to get a phone call explaining all of this - in a nice way. She said she has been emailing and calling for weeks, which we have yet to see, and also nothing was mentioned from her husband who we spoke to YESTERDAY. So, we were left high and dry by them the day before we leave for Kauai. VERY PROFFESSIONAL, huh? This is Kauai, where some people go to surf. Buy a roof rack, it's not that hard.. or state on your website that surfboards will not fit. And stop being completely rude to the people who want to use your business. Firstly, the van we hired was fabulous, Cheryl has thought of everything you could need in a van and has even colour coded them. Everything was provided even maps with supermarkets highlighted on them. We rented our van for a week which was probably too long, 3 nights to just explore the north shore would have been perfect. In Kauai there's only one place you can actually sleep in your van (Haena), everywhere else you need to sleep in the tent (provided by Cheryl too). We'd put the tent up and then slept in the van. The parks along the north shore are great and felt safe, the ones on the east coast or south coast are a little more challenging with homeless locals living there and people coming and going through out the night. One night we had someone try to get into the van whilst we were asleep in it, it freaked me out so much we checked into hotel after that. The best places to camp are Haena, Anini and Kokee State Park (best ever! and soooo quiet). Hanalei would be great too but it's only open Fri & Sat nights. read more

My fiancee and I decided to rent from Cheryl and Bob for our vacation this last February and we were amazed at how awesome the vans were and how Cheryl and Bob conduct their business. Basically, if you dont want to have to worry about anything and want to see Kauai in a totally different way than anyone else, this is your ticket. We were picked up from the airport right on time and Cheryl gave us a quick run down on all the amenities and nuances of the van. Despite the fact that the vans are from the 70's they are in immaculate condition and stocked very, very well. The first day or two went like this: "Oh, I wish we had tupperware (open cabinet...) Oh look! Tupperware". There is literally everything you could possibly need in these vans; multiple sets of bedding, pillows, dishes, utensils for cooking, utensils for eating, large sharp knives, cup and cone coffee system, large cooler, lantern, grill, chairs, sand mats for the beach, umbrella, tent for camping outside the van, etc. They also have a number of other things you can rent for cheap rates (like an extra chair for $5 for the whole trip, regardless of length). The van allowed us to live and experience the island in a "local" way. We spent the majority of our time surfing and exploring Hanalei, going to local farmers markets, cooking great food in the van right on the beach, and basically having an awesome time never once being near a resort of any of the resortiness you can expect if you are staying in a hotel. Things to consider: as of now there are only two places on the island you can camp in the van overnight due to country restrictions. There are many other county campsites where you can camp outside the van, but we stayed at Ha'ena, near Hanalei, because we wanted to stay in the van. Keep in mind you will need permits for every night ($3 per person per night) and you can get them ahead of time (WHICH IS HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended). Bob and Cheryl will probably require they see your permits before you take off because their name is on the line due to the small and connected nature of the island community. As an example, we accidentally camped in the van at the wrong spot (Salt Pond Park) and got a visit from the county ranger that morning who kindly informed us we had to stay in a tent and not the van next time. The ranger then called Cheryl to let her know this had happened. So, long story short, follow the rules because you are being held accountable for you actions. Don't think you can just park the van at any random beach whenever you want wherever you want. There are rules and Kauai parks enforces them. All that being said, Cheryl and Bob are in the process of changing the regulations to allow camping in the vans at any county park, so things could change in the near future. Finally, if you are surfing keep in mind that due to insurance restrictions the vans cannot be equipped with racks which means you will need to put boards inside the van (which is fine with two people, we had two 10 foot boards). You could probably fit three if you had short boards, just something to consider. We will definitely be coming back to Kauai and renting a van again. It really cannot be beat. No rental car, no lame hotel room. Instead, you have the ultimate freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want for less money. It is awesome! read more

We recently spent a week in Kauai in a VW vanagon camper from Kauai Camper Rental. It was by far the best thing to do if you are planning on camping on the island. We were picked up at the airport by Cheryl in the van which was fully stocked with everything we needed for the week including a full sized cooler with ice and cold drinks for us on our arrival. Cheryl was our local guide to the island in addition to the Kauai guide book, and she had tons of information on the local things to do. If you want to see Kauai like a local and avoid the tourist scene, rent a van from Kauai Camper Rental. We stayed at a number of local beaches, went to the farmer's market, and got to the see the entire island on our own schedule. Plus it rains alot on the island, so having a camper van is a huge plus! Cheryl and Bob were extremely helpful and had everything taken care of for us. We had fresh clean hotel style bath towels, beach umbrella, all the cooking utensils you could ever need and more at our disposal. The van even had a 4 person tent with a queen sized air matress for us to use which was practically new. It was a great experience and definitely worth it. read more

My girlfriend and I decided to take a vacation to Kauai in September. After a previous trip to Molokai we decided we really wanted to camp in Kauai instead of staying at a hotel. At first we thought we would bring our own equipment until we found Bob from Kauai Camper Rental. They had everything we needed and more! Kauai Camper Rental had the newest and latest in items such as a Light Speed tent for sleeping in and the beach, an automatic air matress, along with like new bedding and food cooler. But more importantly Bob was excellent to work with and his knowledge of the island made us feel like we had been there before. On top of all this we were met at the Cosco parking lot to receive the equpment then Bob went out of his way to meet us on the south side of the island to take it back. My husband and I rent "Janie" from Cheryl and Bob, and what an amazing week we had! It was great to have our wheels and accommodation with us wherever we went, and made it easier and more enjoyable seeing the island, since we never had to drive back to a central location each night. We stayed at Anini, Ha'ena and Salt Pond beach parks. These county parks were great, but I would avoid Lucy Wright as well as Hanamaulu. It was great meeting other travelers and locals at these parks. Cheryl and Bob have great vans! "Janie" was in mint condition, with new canvas, new window screens, floor mats, new tires, etc. Really incredible for a girl her age. And they had thought of everything you might need, from ice already in the cooler when they picked us up, to a grill for "eating out", and everything in between. We will definitely be coming back to Kauai and when we do, we will be renting from Cheryl and Bob again! In the meantime, we'll be telling friends, and strangers, about this amazing opportunity. read more

THE GOOD.....well equipped vans THE BAD....be nice to know in advance that they don't allow their vans to go to one of the best spots on kauai. polihale. even when the roads are good. bob and cheryl are not good communicators. bob looks like he drinks too much and pretty unaware. slept in tent one night but air mattress had leak. sleepless night. pump on sink not working. THE ABSOLUTE UGLY....arranged for them to meet us at airport for our flight home. they showed up at park instead. cheryl tore a strip out of US for abandoning van in parking area cause we needed to catch flight. highly unprofessional. terrible communicators. SUMMARY...if you are not adventurous then these vans will likely work well for you but if you are....too many restrictions. campervans are for adventure are they not?. better to just car camp and save money if you are just gonna go where all the sheep go. sober up and grow up cheryl and bob. read more
