    Alii Lock & Key

I had a very unique situation with our Ohana Volvo XC70. It only came with one key, no spare, and a…read morecouple of problems. My main concern was making a duplicate key for peace of mind. Unfortunately, Volvo (like many European cars) has created an overly complicated system of acquiring a duplicate key. For 3 reasons: 1 there is no Volvo dealership on the Big Island, 2 keys are extremely expensive, and 3 they are complicated to duplicate. I called a few good locksmiths on the Big Island and both veered away from the problem explaining to me the complications of owning a Volvo. I finally ventured into a well-established Locksmith as my last resort and their guidance led me to contact ALI'I LOCK and KEY. I was told if anyone on this island would consider my request it would be Mr. DuFour. Having been prewarned about my Volvo conundrum, I called Mr. DuFour explaining thoroughly my situation and that I would accept my losses if it didn't work. Mr. DuFour took the challenge full-on and within an hour, he had created a duplicate "dummy" key and further educated me on the next steps in order to program a couple of new keys-fobs. The fact that I have a "dummy" key to unlock the car in case I locked myself out is priceless. The fact that I have to still deal with Volvo, well that's another story. In the meantime, if you are looking for someone who would consider a "challenge" that is worth every "lucky" penny, well it's worth every cent and in the long run, it makes common sense too. ALI'I LOCK and KEY is uniquely busy within their craft and is a very well-respected Locksmith with an impressive curriculum vitae. Mahalo, Sir.

In honesty, through out the whole project i could not predict when he would be there or not. The day he was scheduled to show up and do work he said he would be there in the morning. I assumed this meant 8 or 9 am but he came nearly at noon. Later that day he said he would return after a lunch break but did not with out sending any word. This was fine as i was working on other projects at the location and his disappearance and untimeliness was acceptable. He did it again the following day and on a separate occasion for a smaller job. If you have the time or luxury to be around you will probably endure, if you have places to be or are bothered by his vague schedule this will definitely be a problem for you. The quality of the work. The front 2 doors of the office were done satisfactorily. But the 3 in the back had problems. One of the doors had to be re-set as it would not open completely. To his credit, he stated that he rarely hung doors but was willing to do it. He also fixed the problem free of charge and offered to fix a molding that cracked while he was repairing the door. He is honest and reputable but the work quality is lacking in some areas. The other 2 doors must be held shut or the keys don't work. The door to my section of the office must be slammed in order for it to shut. He does clean up his work place and discards scrap material and packaging on his own which is nice. Many construction types leave a mess especially if the site has other forms of renovation or construction. At our site there were piles of removed flooring, sawdust and other various debris strewn about, but the area Haraga was working in was was clean and swept after his work was done. He also installed a lock on a desk during a separate occasion. The lock may be bypassed if pulled on sharply rendering the lock moderately useless. This also causes damage to the desk as he did not install some sort of grommit into the wood to prevent splintering. There is also a dent in the desk door which he must have overlooked. He is honest and I am certain if he had noticed it he would have said something. The price. Almost would have garnered a third star in my book but i have seen better prices in more competitive environments such as Oahu. Just because locksmiths are rare in Hilo doesn't mean the price should rise and the quality drop. I feel quality and competitiveness should carry through just for good businesses sake. His prices are fairly competitive and are among the best in Hilo. I cannot guarantee this as their were some locksmiths we have called that didn't even respond back. The one thing you can count on with Haraga is he will respond. Whilst on the job he answered calls and assured customers he would get back to them. This can be taken many ways: one may assume he is rude as he is answering calls while you are with him but this is acceptable to me as I understand the challenges one faces as a small business owner. Not every business can afford a private office and the services of a secretary. I find it more assuring that he makes an effort to keep in touch with his clientel. As ive mentioned before. MOST other locksmiths we have contacted were either booked for some unreasonable amount of time (6+months) or did not even answer the phone on repeated occasions.
