They hold against the teeth the way good noodles should. The broth comes through, then the pork, and then the marinated egg with its dark, quiet flavor. It is more authentic than the ramen you buy at the Asian grocer and take home to make yourself. There is something different about a bowl made by someone who knows what the bowl is supposed to be. The room was not what you might imagine when you think of ramen. It was somewhere between a teriyaki place and a sandwich shop. The building was full of businesses and the room belonged to the building. There was nothing wrong with that. A man does not need much from a room when he has a good bowl in front of him. The waitresses understand this. They come by often. They look at the table and see what is needed. Water. Another thing. Anything that is not quite right. They take care of it. That matters. It is a good bowl of ramen, and they take good care of you while you eat it.

We're down the street from Zen and decided to give their ramen a try. Parking is easy to locate but can be a bit crowded since it's in the same lot as Dutch Bros and a couple other shops. When we first entered, we were greeted by an employee (and the Naruto statue at the front hehe). It was fairly empty when we arrived since it was on a Friday around 4ish in the afternoon. You have to pay first when you order. You'll be provided a number placard to place at a table of your choose when you dine in, and your food will be brought to you when it is ready. Drinks are also self-serve (for soda). We decided upon water cups but it's at the same station as the sodas. There is a menu at the cash register for quick ordering if you know what you want (when you walk in, it's on the left). The employee also directed us to a menu with pictures and descriptions of each item (when you walk in, it's on the right). The place definitely has Japanese vibes for the interior decor with its oaky/wooden furniture and warm lighting. Our ramen arrived shortly after we seated ourselves. We both ordered similar spicy ramen, which ended up tasting fairly good. My son really enjoyed his ramen since he liked the level of spiciness and taste of the broth (spicy enough to taste the flavors and feel the heat but not enough to hurt). He also liked that the ingredients were balanced (not an overabundance of just ramen noodles). I did enjoy my ramen as well and shared similar views. My only criticism would be that the ramen options seemed very simplistic and many ingredients were similar, so it didn't feel like much variety. My son and I actually ordered two different kinds of ramen, believe it or not, but from the photos, they look almost identical. There's also only the option of tonkatsu or shoyu broth, regular or spicy. The soft boiled egg was delicious but it would have been nice to receive a full egg instead of just half. They are generous with their chasu portions at least, with its big slices. Not as tender compared to other places I've been to, though, but still tastes good. We enjoyed our experience here though so I can at least say that it's worth trying out the ramen. Not so sure about the sushi burritos but maybe we will consider for next time.

I wouldn't call it cheap, but it's definitely not outrageously expensive either, especially for the quality. We usually spend around $100 for two orders of takoyaki and three sushi rolls. I came for the sushi, but apparently I'm staying for the takoyaki and the fantastic service. Seriously, the takoyaki here might be the best I've ever had. They're served at just the right temperature, crispy on the outside, savory, and actually have a good amount of octopus in each ball. My husband agrees, which is why we always end up ordering TWO orders. We can't help ourselves. The sushi itself is delicious and really well balanced. I don't feel like the rolls are overloaded with rice, and every roll we've tried has had a good balance between the fish, sauces, and other ingredients. Nothing feels like it's drowning out everything else. Both times we've visited, the service has also been wonderful. The servers are attentive and friendly, and good service is one of the reasons I enjoy coming back. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, especially around the entrance where you're practically passing right by the chefs. But I actually like the lowkey, humble atmosphere. During the day, it's fairly dim inside with just a sliver of sunlight peeking through, and the neutral tones make it feel cozy without trying too hard to be fancy. My only gripe has nothing to do with the restaurant itself: PARKING. Downtown Olympia parking is such a pain in the neck. You might find yourself circling a few blocks looking for street parking, but Asahi is one of those places where I'll deal with it because the food and service are worth the trip. I've been to plenty of sushi places in California, so after moving to Washington a few months ago, I've been hoping to find a sushi spot here that could compare and that I would actually want to return to. Asahi is definitely that place. It's officially my go-to sushi spot in the area whenever I can afford to treat myself, because if I'm coming here, I'm budgeting enough to try and tip the servers well too. The chicken was much thicker than the chicken teriyaki you'd get at Panda Express and while the teriyaki sauce tasted a bit different, I enjoyed it. The meat was moist and tender and so delicious. And the portions were big too. I ended up taking about half of each entree and 3/4 of my steamed veggies and put them in a separate bowl to eat and saved the rest for dinner the following night. While this place might be a little more expensive than Panda, I think the higher quality of the chicken absolutely makes it worth it! I got here around 5pm on a Monday and I ordered right away and they had the food out in about 10 minutes. If I eat here again I'd probably ask for the sauce on the side so I could choose how much to put on it but I was thoroughly impressed and I enjoyed my meal a lot. And I was really glad I could sub out the white rice for steamed veggies. Next time I've got a craving for chicken teriyaki I'd definitely choose this spot over Panda. For the first time in I don't even know how long, I took myself out to dinner instead of ordering DoorDash from one of my favorite restaurants. I was excited. I was looking forward to sitting down, relaxing, and enjoying a meal. The hostess was absolutely wonderful. She was warm, kind, and attentive from the moment I walked in. Because the ramen menu doesn't list the ingredients, I specifically asked what was in it before ordering. I was told about the noodles, meat, egg, bamboo shoots, and green onions. Corn was never mentioned. When my ramen arrived, I stirred it and noticed corn throughout the bowl. I don't like corn, but I tried to make it work because I didn't want to be difficult. I tried it with the meat. I tried it with the egg. I tried just the broth. Everything tasted like corn, and I simply couldn't eat it. When the hostess came by, I explained what had happened. She looked genuinely upset for me and tried to help. She took it back, but came back to tell me the only option was to pick the corn out because they couldn't remake it. I explained that removing the corn wouldn't help because the broth itself tasted like corn. A manager came over and, after we looked at the menu together, acknowledged that corn wasn't listed. She refunded the ramen, which I appreciate but I really wanted the food, and that was the end of the conversation. By then I was sitting there trying not to cry. I know it may sound silly to some people, but this wasn't just about corn. I had finally done something for myself after a long time. I was so excited to enjoy a meal in one of my favorite restaurants, and instead I left feeling embarrassed, disappointed, and honestly heartbroken. I wasn't looking for free food. I wasn't trying to complain. I just hoped someone would say, "We're so sorry. Let's make you something you can actually enjoy." Instead, I paid for my salad, fighting back tears of embarrassment and sadness got in my car and drove home. The hostess showed genuine compassion, and I'll always remember how hard she tried to help. I only wish the same level of care had come from management. I truly hope the restaurant updates its menu to include all of the ingredients in its ramen and empowers its staff to remake a dish when a customer specifically asked about the ingredients before ordering. If I had an allergy, it would have been an extremely even more horrendous outcome. It would have turned a heartbreaking experience into one where I felt cared for. I wanted a comforting dinner. Instead, I went home in tears.

I informed her of my phone order and she brought out the food and rang me up for around $55? I was thinking, yikes, that's a steep price for a spicy tofu soup and a lunch special of the galbi and mentioned it to her. She told me that the portion made is not the lunch special and next time, make sure to specify that over the phone if I want the Lunch special or dinner portion. She clarified, while acting out the mannerisms, of customers that would complain about the Lunch special, because they would want a dinner portion instead, so she just places general orders as the dinner portion. (I can already imagine the Karens she must have received for her reaction, which is understandable, but at the time, I was just slightly irritated since I was hoping to pay a cheaper price.) I am assuming after this experience, there is a difference in portion size for the lunch and dinner pricing.. Besides the miscommunication, I can at least say that the food was prepared quickly since it was ready by the time I arrived at the restaurant (about 15 mins after I placed the order?). With the outcast weather, I was craving some soondubu, and Seoul Garden definitely delivered! The tofu portions were generous and the broth was the right amount of spicy where you can taste the flavor but it is not overwhelming. I was not expecting so many complementary sides either! They paired very well with the rice and galbi, which was thoroughly marinated in a delectable glaze. Even though I was initially frustrated that I received the dinner portion, I calmed down after eating the galbi. My son and I actually ended up devouring it.. the food was so good, I totally forgot about the pricing at the moment. Just keep in mind though, this place is not advertised as KBBQ, so you're paying for individual plates/dishes/orders that should already be cooked. I would only recommend this restaurant if there are certain staples you really enjoy (i.e. you're only craving bulgogi but don't want to go out to eat or grill it), because it is arguably just as expensive as KBBQ.
