We go to Kats steakhouse twice a year only because it's one hour and 20 minutes away. The ribeye steak was great as usual. Tried the house potatoes with the tremendous salad to start. Wife had the steak kabobs with grilled carrots. We both had leftovers for at least another meal. The owner who also cooks the steaks stopped for a visit. We finish with the cherry cobbler which had ice cream. Everything was excellent. We love the restaurant because it looks classy and unlike other steakhouse is quite so you can talk. Kat's Steak House is a fabulous restaurant in the middle of nowhere... at least compared to Chicago and Cincinnati where I have lived. Lamont is a small town of 293 located about 30 minutes northeast of Enid. In the middle of this small town is an absolute gem of a steak house, widely known as the best steak house in NW Oklahoma. It is a true family run business with Kat herself bartending and waiting, her Dad at the grill and several aunts and friends serving. They are, to a person, thoughtful, friendly, attentive and professional. AND THE FOOD IS AMAZING... at least as good as anything I can get in the city!!! Lamont, Oklahoma, population 392. Why in the world would anyone want to go there looking for a place to eat, let alone a fabulous steak house on Main Street? We'll, I went there with my wife and friends, not knowing what to expect and enjoyed what has to be the best steak ever! The exterior looks run down and in need of a facelift like so many other business on the street. There must have been a dozen failed and shuttered businesses on Main Street and Kat's could be mistaken for one of those businesses. So I kept a positive attitude regardless of first appearances. When we walked inside, it was anything but run down. It Is a thriving restaurant that was nearly packed with few open tables remaining. The menu is simple with a large selection of beef steaks, some pork and some chicken. I ordered the Rib Eye rare +1 and a loaded baked potato. While waiting for my order to be prepared, I enjoyed a well-crafted Old Fashioned. When the meal came, it looked fabulous. Proper grill marks and a beautiful glaze. I cut into the steak and it melted like butter in my mouth. I have never had a better steakhouse steak than tonight. The loaded baked potato was delicious but the Rib Eye took the spotlight! Wow! So meeting people and establishing friendships is sort of like choosing restaurants. What a disappointment. We specifically sought this steakhouse out to celebrate a special occasion, and traveled a ways too. We arrived for our reservation and we had to wait. Once we were seated we found ourselves in a very tight/cramped table. The booth was relatively orthopedic and was difficult to negotiate our meal when the people behind would move as our seats would move up and down like we were on some kind of ride. The food itself was okay - expensive for the quality we received. The service was fine, yet the restaurant was so tightly packed it was difficult to hear people at our table, though we could have told you about the family's events and orders at a nearby table. We had heard so much about this little place that we had to drive an hour one way to check it out. And it is an interesting little place. It sits blended into Lamont's Main Street, north of the post office on the east side of HWY 60. But let me stress that you need to get a reservation. The place fills up very fast. This is not the place for a romantic date with pleasant conversation. Because it is so loud. The echoing noise from the horde mixed with the loud music was so uncomfortable. If you and your's idea of romance does not involve talking to each other then this might be your place. Yet, beyond the sound, it is clean and the interior is pleasant. It has almost a farmhouse kitchen or dining room feeling. And that is part of the sound issue. As we could hear everyone's conversations. From spouses arguing about money, to folks talking about the various games. The acrostics are horrible, period. It needs some sound-dampening elements add to the decor to subdue the sound a bit. The hostess (an older lady) who sort of greeted us was not the most pleasant. In fact, she seemed bothered by our arrival 10 minutes before our reservation. But our waiter was prompt and friendly. The issue with him was how he handled the drinks. He needs instruction on how to handle them to reduce cross-contamination. Never should a waiter or waitress handle the rim of the glass period. No appetizers on this one. From what we saw the onion rings can't make the rest of the meal that much better for the cost. We had a small sirloin steak meal and the kabobs meal. We went this route due to the cost of the steaks. Now, the sirloin steak at $36 dollars was a low-end piece of meat. I am glad that the $44 Rib-eye wasn't selected. Because the one I got was okay at best. They cooked it spot on at medium-rare and the flavor was not bad. But it was a bit tough and stringy. I would rate it at best as a $15-$18 steak. It did not justify their price. The salads with the ranch dressing were not bad. They were fresh with no wilted sections or nasty bits on the leaves. I bit more substance would have been nice. I ordered the Corporate potatoes. To which I will say don't order them. They were silly and bland. They needed help in a big way. The bland potatoes and sour cream with cornflakes on top were as unimpressive as the steaks. They needed some supportive spices, like chives, salt, and pepper. The creme brulee we selected for dessert was unimpressive as well. It lacked depth and flavor. Instead of giving one a rich decadent flavor to enjoy, it was mild and bland. Like a lukewarm vanilla box pudding with some toasted syrup on top. Would we go back? The answer is we don't know. We didn't hate it. But we were not blown away either. And for the price, we expected a little more bang for our buck. We felt that for a $136.00+ check for two without an appetizer or any liquor, lacked value. We actually felt we should have gotten something more. Other than a 2-hour round trip, rude reception, loud noise, and subpar food. It has a lot of potential, and we had heard a lot of folks raving about it. But folks are so used to mediocrity that anything above it seems awesome in their little minds. Kat's is not Awesome. But it is not horrible either. It could be incredible and it has a lot of potential. But, let's be clear, it is not worth the money. But it wouldn't take much to make this a damn fine destination experience. We may consider coming back some other time to give them another try. We wanted it to be super. We felt a significant event should be celebrated. We searched Yelp and saw the reviews for Kat's and were quite hoping the 40 minute drive was worth the effort. We made reservations through the app which was very convenient. We received updates and queries to remind and ensure we would still be honoring our reservations, again, convenient and helpful. We were greeted warmly and told they were getting a table ready for us. After a moderate wait we were seated in the main room which was quite.... we will say cozy....one could say cramped. Our booth was tight and we aren't large. The backs of both sides of our booth were in constant motion from the folks sitting in the booths on either side. A combination of back massage and roller coaster at times. Fun at Disney, not so much for enjoying a meal. Conversation was difficult due to the overall noise level in the room. Two large groups in the center provided the room with accounts of their recent experiences and grievances. The wait staff had to nearly shout over the conversation which added another element to the din. We ordered an appetizer and when the appetizer arrived ordered dinner. 1/2 way through our delicious onion rings came the salads. I'm sure it was not intentional but my salad arrived about four inches from my face while the table was queried as to who chose which dressing. With the salad bowl out of my face and the appetizer plates moved to the side we enjoyed our nice salads. One of our party got the balsamic dressing and coughed her way through dinner with the harsh vinegar providing the stimulus. There were no dinner rolls offered or provided but we just had onion rings so.... We had our salads and watched our companion choke her way through the balsamic rodeo. Entrees soon followed and here is where the train left the tracks for the last time. The side of Kat's Homestyle Potatoes were a meager portion that was not terribly hot. My steak was cooked well but very salty and,again, not hot. My baked potato was baked but not recently; the condiments were ice cold and the potato was room temp or slightly above. My wife and I ordered the same doneness but hers was quite rare as mine was cooked well. Her steak was tough and very salty along with being undercooked. Our son's steak missed the mark in cooking, quality and overly salted as well. The fourth of our party, now recovered from her battle with the balsamic, ordered a pasta chicken dish that was served warm-ish as well. We all shared a crème brûlée that was nice and a Bourbon Pecan pie that was the highlight of the meal. The evening was just a shattering disappointment from the cafe/diner atmosphere, the cramped booth with the bucking backrest and the food that, while it didn't all pass 4 inches from my nose, was passed to us quickly and without a lot of follow up. We didn't expect dark walls, red velvet carpet or tuxedo adorned hosts but we also didn't expect an atmosphere surpassed by Texas Roadhouse. We went to Kat's on the recommendation of a friend. Over the years, my enthusiasm for steaks out has waned - generally too much money for a steak that's just o.k. The steak I make at home is better and less expensive. So while I was cautiously optimistic, the thing that really intrigued me about Kat's was the photo of their onion rings. More about that in a minute. My wife and I split (as we often do) one meal - here, the 10 ounce sirloin. It was great: I think the best steak I've had out ever. Kinda funny, but true, every bite I took I was a little surprised at how good it was. Well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My wife liked her half, too. So why not 5 stars? Well, I'm frugal (think cheap), and the steak + house potatoes + salad was $28. The menu clearly states if you split an entree they will bring a second salad and add a $9 upcharge. So $18.50 (dividing in half) for a 5oz sirloin, about 7 thin slices of potato, and house salad is a bit much in my opinion. Really, I mean REALLY, I'm not complaining about you, Kat's. You're not out of the norm for pricing in my experience. But this is why we prefer to eat at home. Ok, onion rings: we got the half order, $9, and it was enough for 3, maybe 4, folks. That didn't stop my wife and me from cleaning the plate! In fact, I considered eating the plate. These are done exactly the way I wish I could do at home: thinly sliced, lightly dusted NOT battered, perfectly seasoned. Terrific! Kat's will be a special dine out destination for us, just not often because of the price. Again, best steak I've had out ever, and the onion rings... perfect! The folks were very nice, too. I had heard so many good things about this place. I've had such high hopes and expectations. Do you know what the saving grace is of this steakhouse? The beautiful amazing soul of Kats dad manning the grill. What a blessing he is. When we walked in for our 8pm reservation. We were greeted not by Kat but two atrociously loud groups of people competing to speak over the other. When we were shown our table, in the front next to these two groups I asked to be moved, she couldn't even hear me over them. I had to basically yell. How were my significant other and I supposed to enjoy an expensive date night out if we couldn't even converse? We were seated just on the other side of the doorway behind the obviously intoxicated group of the two. The entire time we were there neither groups volume was addressed so they just continued to get louder trying to talk over one another. Their appetizer section is wanting for more. There is no bread, no rolls like most steakhouses offer. The menu, expect your eyes to roll back and wallet to hurt. $44 for most steak options that come with a salad and 1 side. The salad is spring mix with shaved Parmesan, and 1 single cherry tomato, it was severely lacking for what we paid. We both got company potatoes because I had heard so many praising them, that you HAVE to get them. Don't. They're basic shredded frozen hash browns with zero flavor. Unless you like the sour cream taste with toasted corn flakes... I also got roasted carrots, those were okay. But again lacking a flavor. The kebab veggies were beautiful. Not over done. Lightly salted. The rice was more of a risotto consistency and lacked flavor. But again, I will state, the only saving grace here, is the beautiful man cooking the steaks who was genuinely excited and happy to be cooking them for us. Because while a little under seasoned, they were cooked absolutely beautiful. However, be warned, the filets are not real filet mignon. Ours had fat and inedible gristle. Real ones do not have that in them. The ribeye was to be expected however for a $44 steak I'd still expect a better cut. I had several patches of inedible gristle. As we were celebrating my spouses birthday we were asking about some desserts, he decided on the creme brûlée which they stuck a candle on for him. He thought he had ordered my apple pie as well when we got his, but it never came and I told him I didn't need it anyway. By this time I had developed a headache and desire to just get out of there because both tables in the adjoining room were still there and still at a decibel you'd expect at a bar and not a nice restaurant. The Rum cake is supposed to be homemade with real rum. We didn't have that but it sounded enticing. At the end of the night we still left a nice tip, because the dad deserved it and had earned it. He was beaming with pride in his work and his daughter. He was personable and friendly and kind. Not sure it would be worth a revisit for me as the price does not match the product. read more
