We have been there several times. I doubt many other people in the country have gone to a larger number of Asian buffets than I have, lol. This one is definitely in the upper 50 percentile in food variety and quality. Not the best but not at all bad. Price is reasonable. Seating comfort acceptable. Bathrooms unimpressive. The serving staff tends to be inattentive, unambitious and imbued with 'attitude'. I have not dropped by a few times lately simply because I am weary of the servers. I almost gave a 1-star for how bad it was. Upon entering you are greeted with, "what's their ages" rather than welcome to Katana. The pay screen is embarrassing with no custom tipping options only 15%, 18%, 20%, and no tip. The hibachi bar had a decent selection of options. Sadly, the steak was tough and the hibachi overall had lack of flavor. Practically everything on the buffet appeared to be dried out especially the fried chicken. This was our 2nd visit in some time. The first visit most of the food was cold, so most of it got pitched. Today we thought we'd give it another try, again all the food was cold, neither my husband or I could stomach the cold stuff. On top of that the room temperature was cold. We won't be giving them a third time. So sad especially since they charge $36. For 2 seniors to eat, and they can't eat it because it's too cold. We told the waitress twice about the cold food. I like going there. That being said, they don't always have everything. Sometimes the food is cold and stale on the edges, sometimes overcooked and chewy. The waitresses are not familiar with American customs of service in restaurants. For these and other reasons, my wife doesn't like going. For starters I spotted a table close to the hot food and started to go to that one.The waitress so"No, that table for 5" but there were only 3 chairs and it was the same size table as where we were seated. Cold or lukewarm food for the most part with little or no flavor. The noodles were cold and sticking together. I had to flag down a waitress to get salt & pepper. Our waitress was good at cleaning the plates but not in asking if we wanted more coffee (never filled a second cup) . Tips are almost demanded as the fortune cookies are on a tray with the waitress name and "Thanks for the tip" written in magic marker. We were here for our yearly trip to Amish country last October, and needed someplace to eat on Sunday. We came here our first night here and loved it so much, we came back at the end of the week. This year, we came back again on Sunday night. Now, it is a little pricey, but no more so than any other place I've been. The place was busy and they seated us immediately. First off they have a sign that reads, If you do not finish your plate we will charge you for wasting. Second if you pay with a credit card the servers get very nasty if you don't leave a tip. I watch workers chase a lady down bc she only tip 15 dollars for a group party. They paid the price. Tips are not a must people. So disappointed in the service staff here tonight. I watched as a couple got up to get some food and their table was immediately cleared and someone else seated there when they returned with their food. Same happened to the couple next to us and when they came back to people in their seats, they said they were sitting there, the server who had stuck her hands in their cups to carry both away with one hand, brought them back. The same drinks she had her fingers in. Another server couldn't get off her phone long enough to seat people. I was shocked. This used to be one of the best asian buffet's in NE Ohio. A lot has changed, sadly. They don't have some really basic asian dishes like rice noodles and other dishes have really odd flavors like shrimp with some sort of fake butter taste. The sushi is also unappealing except for traditional california roll. about the only good thing is the hibachi/mongolian grill where you can pick your raw items and they cook it for you. Otherwise, a lot of dishes did not seem fresh and weren't even very warm. I would recommend that your first go around the buffet to just take small amounts of each item to sample it--even if you've been to Katana before. Don't assume something will be what you think it is. Made the mistake with certain dishes like the shrimp and chicken wings which weren't any good. Also, their in-your-face tip situation is a tip off that their staff is likely not paid or underpaid that they are so desperate for tips. I did see another customer had left a $2 tip on a $50 tab...not sure how you can do that in good conscience. I would recommend paying tip (in cash) after your meal and not when you pay at the front desk--in the past, it seemed like the staff did not trust management to given them their due tip. I have been going here for years. I don't understand the negative reviews as my experience has been very good. You won't find a greater choice of dishes in N.E. Ohio. It's about what you'd expect from a buffet. There are a ton of food options - some good and some bad, and you're inevitably going to find some cold food out of all the various options. The thing that threw me for a loop is that they don't have pricing on their website (which isn't mobile-friendly either), and there's no pricing posted at the restaurant either. If I could give them less than one star I would! My husband and I used to go here back in the day and the food was good and service was pretty good. Well with inflation and rising prices the buffet was no longer in our reach to go as much as we used to. It had been 2 years since we went but we decided to take my grandmother out for her 85th birthday there and spend the money we didn't really have much of. Well anyways, we brought my 4 year old daughter who got worn out from playing and NEVER eats anything at buffets, she will only eat food at home (she has a sensory processing disorder so she's a bit different). Well when we came in we told the lady for 4.. me, my husband, grandma, and my mom. We knew my daughter would sleep through the entire thing and never would touch any food anyways... the lady STILL charged us for my daughter... 5.99! Well I didn't say much really.... it is what it is... tried to let that go. Then the lady told us to seat ourselves.. so we did but then another lady made us not 2 but 3 times til it was seen fit for her where we sat... still didnt say much... but she ended up sitting us by 3 very rude men who kept talking crap about my 4 year old daughter who mind you WAS SLEEPING. Well I bit my tongue on that I dont really like conflict and it was my grandmas birthday. Well... ate the food which has went DOWNHILL since the last time we came a few years ago but didn't complain much. My husband left to take my daughter out to the car because like I said she was tired and me my mom and grandma began to leave, mind you we didn't even have time for my mom to get her purse out to leave a few dollar tip which she always does until TWO ladies that worked there (one who which on filled my water once and no one else needed a refill) started TAPPING on a tray that had fortune cookies on it DEMANDING a tip REALLY LOUD in front of EVERYONE, before we even had time to leave a tip! I arrived in Canton yesterday to do missionary work here. On my way to Panera Bread this morning to have coffee, I noticed Katana Buffet and Grill nearby. Eventually, I opted to have lunch there. They had a good assortment of food. Three things I particularly desire in an Asian buffet: sushi, a hibachi grill, and many ice cream flavors. Katana had all of them with eight choices for the latter. I would give them a higher rating if it weren't for how they handle money. While paying for my meal in advance, I noticed a tip jar on the counter. I gave the cashier a $20 bill. She gave me $6.15 in change (not the $6.16 I should have received). I didn't say anything about that. Still, a cashier should be mindful to give customers all the change due to them regardless of the amount. Then I noticed my receipt suggested gratuities ranging from 18-22%. Usually, I don't tip at buffets because I'm dishing up my own food. Sometimes I'll give a dollar or two if I receive exceptional service from the server who takes my dirty dishes and brings me glasses of water. Mine at Katana did an okay job. But before I got ice cream for dessert, the server brought me a tray with a fortune cookie on it. The tray had "TIPS" written on it. Just as I don't like preachers pressuring me for offerings at church meetings, I'm turned off when restaurants get pushy about tips. Instead of taking the fortune cookie, I placed it back on the tray before walking out. UPDATE (10/31/24): I ate at Katana again since I couldn't find another Asian buffet in Canton. This time I got a discount. I wasn't aware they had a senior rate until the customer ahead of me in line asked for it. Once again, the cashier didn't give all the change due to me. I politely asked for the three cents that should have been included. She took them from the tip jar on the counter. Then, I requested a booth to sit in. Not counting a whole section that was empty, the employees refused to let me sit in a booth that remained unoccupied the whole time I was there. I use to really like this place but some of the waitresses are rude. They have also got rid of many sauces (red hot and others), the ice cream toppings, as well as the coupons they use to run locally. It's basically got more expensive, while cutting corners. The rudeness I experienced last time was about the last straw. To their car!! !!!!! The girls thought the tip was paid in the beginning when they paid. You pay up front there. To have a stranger come to their car demanding a tip is ridiculous. Chasing them. My grandson wanted to go to this restaurant after his high school graduation. The server came to fill our drink orders. She immediately very loudly started questioning the number of people that had been paid for. At this point, everyone seated around us is looking. So, we are going back and forth about the number of people on the receipt and the number of people seated at the table. It is finally established that the number of people on the receipt match the number of people at the table. The only reason I did not walk out is because it was too late to find another restaurant and I did not want to ruin my grandson's big night. She then started yelling that we didn't pay for the toddler in a highchair. My granddaughter is disabled, and I explained to the cashier that she wouldn't be eating. (already fed prior to coming because of medical issues.) The cashier said OK to my not paying for her. I told the server, yet she continued to get loud. She then stormed off with the receipt. She came back with the receipt and drinks and did not say another word. We did not see the server again until we were finished and the table was piled with plates. She offered me, and only me, a drink refill as if that would earn her a tip. No tip after getting loud and trying to embarrass me and I will definitely never go there again! read more
