As a Yankee I have a certain fascination with the South on account of its being like a whole other country. Karocks Chik Ona Stik is just one example that underscores this feeling of foreigness. To begin our tale I must tell you that my friends and I were on an epic road trip from Santa Cruz, CA to New Orleans and beyond (the beyond in this case being Ellisville, MS). We hungered and lusted for those southern delicacies we always see on our Yankee TV sets in our Yankee western state. Suffice it to say we got our fill of such decadent fare. Indeed, I didn't eat, let alone see, a vegetable or anything that had once grown in the ground throughout the duration of my time in the South. The food at Karocks is, well, fried. My friends and I got the Big Kat Kombo, Karock's specialty, it consists of fried chicken tenders, french fries and a buttered breadstick. It was good, as most fried things are, and pretty cheap too considering the belt busting portions they give you. Moreover, they practically give you an oil drum for a drink cup meaning that you can drink that most quintessentially southern of drinks, sweet tea, by the gallon. The service was friendly too, I was enthralled by their accents. Most of the staff were younger college age kids who apparently attend the local junior college. I had to try super hard not to drawl along with them (it almost happened a few times). All in all Karocks is a place that you're only likely to see in the deepest, darkest, most Deliverance-like southern town. But then again, that is just what my friends and I wanted. read more

I'm driving from Louisiana to Massachusetts (again). My car was due for an oil change and I was due for a snack when I hit Ellisville Mississippi. The former I found easily enough, but since exciting the highway into this sweet little town I had been seeing signs encouraging me to go to "KaRocks" which promised to be just ahead. I'm allergic to gluten, but they were accommodating and fixed me a burger with leaves of lettuce in place of a bun. My traveling companion ordered fried pickles, which are growing in popularity these days, but are best below the Mason-Dixon, and a potatoe salad that hit the ball or of the park. I almost went back for another order before leaving the parking lot, but unfortunately my fragile boston constitution can only take so much rich southern food. The food here is great, and service is always fast! If you go here I definitely recommend the Kabob Kombo with rock sauce. It's so good! The chicken has a little spice to it but just the perfect amount. The fried bread is amazing, and the fries are pretty great too. read more

I've been going here for almost as long as they have opened. I started when I went to the local college to try the new place. They had some of the best chicken strips I ever had. The quality has been consistent over the years. I've been able to try new items as they expanded their menu over the years. I don't know anything on the menu that isn't good. Personally I prefer their chicken strips over Cane's. They are consistently juicer and mor plump. And if you like onion rings, their onion rings are hand made from scratch. Simply the best. The honey mustard is homemade with their recipe. I love it. If you like honey mustard it is much better than other restaurant's packaged stuff. If Cane's sauce is more of your taste, try the Rock sauce. It was designed to be similar, but with a KaRock's twist. It is very good on shrimp or other seafood. To get the best quality, lunch time is the best time to visit. Dinner time is slower, but the top cooks work the day shift for their busy times. Plus you are more likely to meet Rocky, the owner, during the day. Rocky is what makes this place. His friendly demeanor and welcoming attitude is sure to make you feel better. The overall staff is the same way. This is a family owned and run restaurant, and they make you feel like part of the family. I recommend anyone to stop by and try them. There is something you will find to your liking. From chicken strips, to wraps, salads, catfish, shrimp, even oysters, you will find a favorite or two. While driving North on I-59, my wife was hungry for a Shrimp Poor Boy. As luck would have it we took the exit for Ellisville, MS which led us to Karock's. What a wonderful experience! Traveling from Tennessee to Natchez Mississippi and got off on the Ellisville exit, almost pulled into fast food place and we saw a sign that read AMOST TO KAROCK's RESTAURANT" looked interesting so we kept going a few blocks, so glad we did it was a neat place and the best fried shrimp, homemade onion rings and fries we have ever had, and we have eaten a lot of shrimp. Will go back if ever in the area, nice people behind counter and waitresses so friendly, the walls are covered in newspaper articles about local athletes and achievements. read more
