We rescued this big baby, Juice, about a year ago and while he has some excellent attributes we couldn't seem to really get him to listen or obey certain commands. We needed help! After several training inquiries with multiple companies, I immediately heard back from Karma, and a call with the owner was set up. He asked me all about Juice and explained the options he thought would be best. After deciding on "board and train" he said he thought he had the perfect person in mind and they would reach out soon. A couple days later I received correspondence from Sammye Darling, a trainer for Karma, who wanted to set up a call to talk about Juice. During our call she was very confident that she would be able to help with teaching him basic obedience and jumping. We settled on a 10 day timeframe with the expectation that it would be imperative to continue the training ourselves afterwards. (She would've preferred 14 days because that last few days is really when the training sinks in but I assured her we would stay on it) Scheduling was easy and convenient while we went out of town on vacation. Sammye was warm, gentle, and friendly upon dropping Juice off with her and I trusted her immediately. She stayed in constant communication with us, sending pictures, and updates on his progress. He took some time, he's stubborn, but eventually she saw the switch and said he was doing great! I missed him so much but knew he was in good hands with Sammye. Fast forward 10 days later and the day came to pick him up and I couldn't wait to see him. I'll spare you all the details of baby talk, kisses, hugs, etc. but it was a joyous reunion that had us in awe of the things he had learned. We spent about an hour there learning the commands, how to reward them, and practicing before heading home. She worked wonders and we were so excited to go home and continue the work. Before leaving we scheduled our follow up in person training session for a couple weeks out so Sammye could come see him in his own environment and see if we actually kept up with the training which we did! He is doing great! No, he's not perfect and we're still working on certain things but he's a different dog in many aspects. He has a "place" for when we're eating and now does it without asking and gets "off" the bed when it's time (he's too big to sleep with us) so he has his own. Those are two giant wins for us and we can't thank Sammye enough! He learned so much more and we continue to work with him everyday. Karma was professional and quick to respond which is always something I appreciate. The socialization helps our puppy meet other people and other dogs. With training they learned the basics and the instructor comes around to not only make sure the pups understands but the pawrents are getting tips and tricks to be successful. For the second pup, we started at the end of Feb so we were interrupted with COVID. Karma offered zoom classes to continue the training sessions. Although I like the in person class, I enjoyed the zoom classes because it felt personal and James (our trainer) made sure to address our training issues we were experiencing during the pandemic. We signed up our very newly adopted 4 month old puppy Breaux for Karma's puppy kindergarten and had a FANTASTIC experience! The class was held at Carlisle's on Sunday afternoons and was split into small, medium, and large dog sessions. They offer 1 free class, which was great for making sure the 7 week class is for you. Their focus is positive training, using treats and praise, and gentle (voice only) corrections. Side note: Before I found Karma, I called another daycare/boarding/training business, whose classes were significantly more expensive, and was told that 4 months was too old to start kindergarten, so choosing Karma was really easy. There were 2 trainers (Ashley and Brooke) for 2-7 puppies+owners, so there was lots of individual attention. Both trainers were welcoming, extremely knowledgeable, they clearly loved dogs, and all the puppies loved them. Each class felt casual but was structured with socialization/playtime, learning/practicing 1 new skill, and then downtime for petting/desensitizing paws. What I found most helpful was that Brooke and Ashley asked if we had questions throughout class and saved time for questions/discussions at the end of each class. I probably asked 5-10 random dog questions (usually unrelated to what we were doing that day) each class, and got a ton of great tips, as they were so willing to talk about any issue or question and share their knowledge/expertise. After completing all 7 sessions, our friends/family are super impressed with his good behavior, attention, and skills, I feel more confident with Breaux, and we've formed a great foundation of training. Our board & train situation was to have Moose stay overnight at James' house for the week. Moose came back a little rockstar. James sent us a training outline of what he was going to be working on each day, and created a schedule for Moose which is so nice because he didn't really have any structure before that and he does so well with some structure. We are super happy we found Karma dog training! We researched around and signed up for puppy classes even before we picked up Sansa. The puppy group session was perfect for her to learn something new each week and to have a little time to socialize with other puppies. If we happened to miss a class we were able to make it up since the lessons were on a 7 week rotation schedule. The facility itself is on the small side and I wished there was a patch of grass in the back for Sansa to pee on (we usually go across the street after class). All the trainers are amazing! We can tell they care a lot about the puppies and they're big on positive teaching methods. Throughout his time with Nala, James was sending me multiple video updates per day with training strategies personalized towards our specific goals - each of these videos were extremely helpful for future training at home. I originally had gone with another company/trainer in the Rice Military area as he was closer, however this man was extremely arrogant, overpriced, lacked professional courtesy of something as basic as returning email/calls in a timely manner and what he claimed was positive training equated to repeatedly yanking a choker collar, no treats, no toys, extremely harsh methods. Needless to say, I was a little nervous going forward with finding an appropriate organization to partner with me training my Labrador puppy. Absolutely life changing. I've had my rescue dog Leo for about 1.5 years, and there are a lot of issues I needed help with. Pilla is an amazing teacher and has given me tools to help manage Leo. I went from having massive anxiety whenever people came over due to Leo's behavior, to feeling confident about how to manage him when people come over. I know that my body language is an important factor in communicating with Leo now. Leo went to from sleeping on my bed (and subsequently becoming territorial over my bed), to sleeping in a crate. You will definitely have to put work in, but any responsible dog owner should know this. We had raved about Karma before and I kept meaning to update. Our actual board and train with Khala was great but the follow up training and customer service (seeminlgy disconnected from khala?) were not. We could not make some trainings due to scheduling and the office was unresponsive and unhelpful. They encouraged and requested a 5 star review to access additional free training sessions that again never came through. Also the training was short lived and though I put in the time and effort to keep our dog on track there has been serious regression. Our 5-month old puppy, Lily, had a great first meeting with James and we were quite comfortable leaving her in his care while we were out of the country for two weeks. They quickly bonded, socialized and became fast friends. James sent us video updates daily, training to-do lists and kept us well informed on Lily's progress. If you're up for a lifetime of carrying nasty high-value treats in your pocket at all times, then this purely positive training method is for you. If you want to have your dog know basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay in a controlled environment, only to have them completely ignore you when you're placed in a REAL WORLD distraction, this training is for you. If you want to have someone tell you that if you have a reactive dog, that avoidance techniques are the best you can ever expect from them, then this is for you. The problem with all-positive training is that there will come a time with every dog when the distractions that dog faces are more interesting to the dog than the high value reward you're carrying on you. All this method does is teach your dog that food is a BARTERING CHIP between you and them - this is ruining your relationship with your dog! I spent over $500 on private lessons where a dog "trainer" sat on my living room floor feeding my dog frozen lamb pieces, and then proceeded to act like she was actually training my dog. And that was after she showed up late (by hours), every single time. I'm sure this works for some dogs, but it certainly was not the right fit for mine. If you have a reactive, aggressive, or high drive dog, do NOT even waste your time here. Personally, I want my dogs to listen to me all the time - not just when I have raw meat in my hand. I only use RO for Doggy Day Camp (or day care as they call it). I absolutely love it and my Golden Doodle is nuts about it. She goes three days a week and has her own set of good buddies to play with. There are a lot to choose from since there are probably 50-60 there in a two acre Field with wading pools for when it is hot. The dogs have to pass a temperament test so they are all well behaved. There is a good number of people counselors to keep the dogs entertained. The really good part is that Bella gets exhausted and falls asleep 30 seconds after getting in the car. read more

Not only did she train my dog but also taught me how to continue the training for my puppy. We were looking to teach our energetic puppy Miso how to channel that energy and learn good manners and that's when we found karma dog training! We only had 5 weeks available before we moved out of Houston and Karma dog training was very accommodating in setting us up into a group class with Mayra. The class itself only consisted of 3 dogs so Miso was able to get the attention he needed to learn. Mayra definitely personalized the class by spending time with each student and teaching them the lesson based on what the personality of the dog was. For Miso, distraction was a big issue so Mayra made sure to treat him often so he would really enjoy making eye contact and actually focus. The classes also consisted of socialization which I thought was very important. Miso is a social butterfly but he needed to learn when it's appropriate and when it's not appropriate to greet other dogs so the class was key in allowing him to greet other dogs while still responding when called. In addition to the class, we did a private session with Mayra and all I can say is, we achieved SOO much in what seemed like a short period of time. She was able to address all of our concerns and we were able to practice the commands and exercises until Miso got it. One of our key focus was having Miso learn to greet guests in a calm and respectful manner and by the end of the session, Miso was able to greet each of us by remaining seated and allowing the "guest" to pet him without nibbling. I came to Karma Dog in Houston looking for training for my 5yo Belgian Malinois rescue, Happy, who had a number of problems. I worked with Sammye Darling who helped us work on leash manners, separation anxiety, and crate training to name a few! I initially started with one private session at my home and decided to do a short board and train with her, which was followed up by a few more one-on-one sessions. Throughout Happy's training Sammye has been very patient and caring towards Happy even with his high energy. Her knowledge about dog behavior and positive reinforced training techniques is superb. Karma has made the transition to owning a puppy the greatest experience ever! Before Remy came home, I was nervous about providing all the best for him and knowing what I needed to train him appropriately. We started attending Puppy Kindergarten classes and all my nerves were calmed. All of the trainers are so knowledgeable and provide individual attention that help each puppy acclimate and learn. But these classes are SO much more than just learning tricks and skills! The socialization aspect has helped Remy become comfortable around all type of animals and people so that I feel confident taking him with me anywhere he is welcome. Also, the handling exercises they introduced helped tremendously when Remy received his first hair cut. The groomers told me he was "the easiest puppy they've ever had!" I truly believe that these experiences would not have been the same without the help and training we received from Karma. In addition to Puppy Kindergarten classes, we also used Karma Dog Training for a Board and Train week when I had to go on vacation. Khala was the absolute best and I immediately felt comfortable leaving Remy under her care. I knew that he would not only be trained, but that he would be loved! I came back from vacation to the happiest, sweetest puppy ready and willing to show off all his new tricks. She sent me pictures throughout the week so I always knew what he was doing and what they were working on that day. That sense of security was unlike any other and well worth the money.
