Unfortunately not a good experience here. It was the equivalent of going to the DMV. Or worse. Total time to do this office visit was over 3 hours. HMO BCBSIL had him on a list. He was nice enough....but I did not have a good experience. Extremely long wait. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a doctors office. I'm sure the HMO's are paying up for the volume I saw going through here and other doctors won't take HMO's. I will just pony up the money next time. For the money and bad service... I lost at work regarding time...I would've broken out even. I left there with questions still. This all comes from being out of touch w simple business and healthcare IS A BUSINESS. No humanity here. Barely any of the staff smiled. This felt like I was in another country or free clinic. Not going back. They squeezed me in for a emergency appointment I was grateful..They almost scheduled me next month. If I would have waited a month to get this experience I would be really pissed. Someone needs to audit our medical system this is just nuts. I will now have to get another opinion because I just don't trust what just happened to here. Yesterday 1/26/23 I just had my second cataract surgery from Dr Kappil and as always it was a remarkable experience , he is kind, friendly and very professional in his duties , his staff is wonderful and pleasant. I also had some torn retinas that Dr Kappil fixed a few years back and he did a wonderful job. I highly recommend highly. read more

I've always read reviews with a grain of salt. I try to base my opinions on my personal experiences. In the case of Dr. Kappil, I would have to agree with the negative reviews on different websites. I had a cataract evaluation appointment on Feb 22, 2022 at the Algonquin office. What bothered me most during my visit was Dr. Kappil kept interrupting me before I could finish my questions. Yes, he does not explain things and was very dismissive. His response to many of my questions was "the surgery coordinator would contact me and go over all the details." My feeling is I would like to hear about the procedure from the doctor, not the coordinator. The coordinator is not doing my surgery, the doctor is. He made me feel that I was an inconvenience to his office by being there. He was uninformative and I did not feel he listened to my concerns. He basically "told" me what he was going to do without explaining my options or the benefits of his decision. Again, all my questions were answered with the statement "the coordinator would contact me with all the info." Nice when a doctor brushes you off to somebody else who's not even a doctor? Well it's been 3 weeks later and the coordinator has not contacted me. Since Dr. Kappil's office basically let me leave my appointment in limbo with no timeline on further appointments, I have found another ophthalmologist. My new doctor listened to my concerns, and answered all my questions. The staff was compassionate and kept asking me if I had any further questions. The doctor explained all my options, the benefits of those options and made me feel relaxed. Something that Dr. Kappil's office seemed not to care about. If you want to feel just like a number, Dr. Kappil's office is the place to go. Personally, I need a doctor who's going to make me feel taken care of when it comes to an eye surgery. Also I guess my over all health was not important since nobody from Dr. Kappil's office has reached out to me regarding scheduling my next appointment. read more

Dr. Kappil is a wonderful doctor. I had cataract surgery on both eyes. I am so amazed with my eyesight now. I can't say enough good things about things about the results of the surgeries. His staff was wonderful and very patient with me and explained everything that was going to be done. I would highly recommend him to everyone. read more

My son has been seeing Dr. Kappil for years. We have never had any issues. When my son lost his insurance and got out of network insurance we chose to continue to see him as private pay. I usually go to the McHenry location and recently he was seen in the Algonquin location which the office staff working that day were incredible. read more

Worst doctor even. No manners. Cocky. Uninformative. Can't multi task. All appointments take at least two hours plus. Ridiculous. GO ELSEWHERE!!! read more

Astonishing Lack of Caring and Respect. I became a patient of Dr. Kappil's a little over a year ago after moving out of Chicago. I have some rather challenging eye conditions: blind in left eye, acute angle glaucoma, and retinoschisis. These require the periodic attention variously of cornea, retina, and glaucoma specialists. I scheduled a follow up appt. w/his office a little over a month ago. On the day of the appointment I spoke w/his scheduler who essentially talked me out of coming in that day (my only guess is that it was late in the day and she wanted to leave early). Within a week I got a letter stating that I had missed an appt.! I called her back and we agreed that, while I needed to be seen by specialists periodically, it did indeed make sense for me to have a general opthalmologist to 'quarterback' my care. We rescheduled an appointment for today. When I arrived, I was initially told the appointment had been 'canceled.' Eventually, they said that the doctor would see me. When he did, he asked me "Did you receive my letter?" I said I had, thinking he was referring to the appt. cancellation notice. Then he said "No, I mean this letter." He showed me a letter stating he had decided not to be my ophthalmologist. I was quite taken aback. As the letter offered no explanation for his decision, I asked him why. He just stared at me blankly. I then asked him what I should do. More silence. At this point, I told him I was perplexed and even shocked as it seemed he was just cutting me loose with no explanation or suggestions. Finally he said "I am sensing you are not happy." I have been a health care consultant for 27 years, and have had a wide range of experiences with practitioners. The lack of caring demonstrated by this doctor is remarkable. I felt I owed it to anyone considering joining this practice to make them aware of my regrettable experience. read more

This is the guy! He took the time to see me in an emergency situation with a uveitis flare up. I was so scared and Dr Kappil put me at ease. His treatment and demeanor was incredible. I cannot say enough about him or his staff. read more

I was referred here by the ER after an injury to my eye and it was a terrible experience. I waited 2 1/2 hours before I even saw the doctor. (1 hour in the waiting room which was packed and another hour in the exam room) I was not provided with any information as to when I was going to be seen or even informed that he was running behind. When I asked at the front desk they just said "there are two more people in front of you. When I finally saw him I was told "sorry I was squeezed in as an emergency" even though I made the appointment 2 days ago and there were clearly other people waiting there as long as me. He did not listen to any of my concerns about my injury and just told me to come back in 4-6 weeks for a routine eye exam. Seriously?! I will never come back here again. Stay away unless you have 3 hours of time that you don't know what to do with! read more

The mchenry office is absolutely terrible. Walking in, the waiting room was totally packed, people's appointments were an hour or more behind, and when we asked the receptionist why they were so slammed, she said that "this is nothing, we were much worse earlier today". There is not even enough room to sit in the waiting room. This place dilates your eyes, then sends you back to the waiting room to wait even longer "up to an hour" we were told before bringing you back into the doctors office. They schedule appointments every 10 mins and people kept pouring in. Stay away from this place unless you have a lot (A LOT) of time to needlessly waste. read more
