My take home box with a variety of mochi's
    Dave H.

I was gifted a Mochi magic class for my 70th birthday.it was terrific! I'm so happy for learning that it's not hard making delicious Mochi. I'm half Japanese and remembered the seasonal festival where a village man would pound the Mochi with a huge wooden mallet as another man turned and moistened the mochi rice being pounded. I remember the charcoal hibachi with the metal grid that the Mochi was roasted on. I've had to rely on my Asian markets for processed Mochi balls. What you make and taste with your teacher, Yukiko-san and her associate Keiko-san in her home are so much more delicious. The table is setup with a wide variety of fillings, all the tools you need and aprons are provided to keep you clean. We learned 4 variations: microwave mochi with matcha & a rose water mochi. A pounded mochi, we used a variety of mallet pounding - very therapeutic. An ice cream mochi, and a fried mochi donut Our group of 7 had a terrific time! We learned how to make Mochi, learned about filling choices, and most importantly got to eat our creations! Itadakimasu! I heartily recommend that you book a lesson. I've since learned about other classes that interested us. Enjoy!!!

Fresh strawberry and red bean mochi

Sometimes I wonder if I'm adopted as I seem not to have inherited the gene for liking bouncy, chewy, rubbery foods....yup, I have a food texture aversion to things like gummy bears/worms, (disdain for) boba and most things made into a ball from rice flour dough (grimmacing)...hey, what can I say I have a refined palate for melt-in-your mouth chocolates! :P Moving onnnnn...sister placed an order online to share with the family as she loves mochi...even the non-asian family members get excited...Why does that need to be mentioned?!! Well most people not familiar with certain ingredients tend to develop a liking over time but they seem to have an innate taste for mochi! Who knew?! Peanut butter mochi with chocolate, red bean with fresh mango, and chocolate truffle with fresh strawberry... "peanut butter cup one was sooo good" "The chocolate truffle was like eating chocolate pudding inside, which was delicious" "wow fresh fruit" And yes I tried the filling of these wonderful treats but saved the rest for those who can appreciate mochi in its chewy, bouncy entirety! *** Support this local small business! *** Kaori's Kitchen offers a 5 star product (family consensus) along with wonderful customer service. Communication was good, delivery happened as promised and FREE! No mochi left behind! :)

Kaori's Kitchen is making mochi available for sale. the ones they make aren't the traditional Japanese ones. theirs have fresh fruit, peanut butter, nutella as well as red bean within. the outer texture mochi is the same. the fruits inside takes getting use to. what's the storage time for fresh fruit mochi? no idea. definitely not as long as the traditional ones. these mochi are better than the Taiwanese ones found in grocery stores. less sugar. they can be picked up at Eon with a $10 order or delivered gratis with a $18 order. check out what's available on their website!

Mochi in San Leandro??  Kaori and her mom Yukiko use to teach a mochi making class but with Covid, they have changed direction and now Yukiko makes them for pickup at Eon or delivery for a fee. For once I am glad I live in SL as right now it is free delivery with a $18 purchase. With fruit filled ones like strawberry and mango with the traditional red bean or with chocolate truffle and nutella, you are bound to find one or two or five that you will love so $18 really isn't too hard especially when they periodically add a new flavor like the newest matcha mochi with matcha truffle. My favorite so far is the mango and strawberry with red bean as it is reminiscent of Benkyodo's but without having to pay toll for it.

Highly recommend! Learn how to make Mochi, bring home about a dozen of your own creations, and enjoy fresh Mochi miso, Mochi ice cream and Mochi donuts during the class. Joined my cousin after she received the AirBnB experience as a bday gift. I believe it was about $60/pp, which is actually quite reasonable considering how much Mochi you take home. Plus I doubted some other Airbnb reviewers when they said they left the class "stuffed" but you really do!! The fresh, warm Mochi is so good it's easy to eat quite a few during the class plus our instructor, Yukiko (Kaori's Mom) and her lovely assistant fed us fresh Mochi miso soup, we made our own ice cream Mochi and, lastly, made fresh Mochi donuts at the end which you should definitely enjoy while hot out of the fryer. Yukiko provides three different recipes to make Mochi at home from the traditional way to a 3 minute microwave version, plus recipes for making a variety of flavors (rose, matcha and ratio guidance for pretty much any flavor you'd imagine). Who knew it could be so easy? There were only 10 people in the class which is held out of her home in San Leandro. It was a very fun and intimate atmosphere with some simple Japanese music in the background, and her granddaughter's toys in the background. It was a truly lovely way to spend a Sunday. Yukiko and her assistant were very kind, fun loving and helpful and our Mochi turned out surprisingly professional looking and tasting. I'll be looking forward to sharing Yukiko's techniques as an activity at a future baby shower or birthday. :) Thank you Yukiko and Kaori for sharing your home and Mochi expertise! Tip: Great gift or date for couples. Massage the warm Mochi dough, get a little messy and share some delicious treats.

Home made ramen noodle. Eating some and save the other half for later

Came here of my sister's bachelorette party over the weekend and it was super fun. We got to make ramen noodle and gyoza. Omg. Delicious!!! We went to her house and she had prepared everything for us. She had pre cooked the meat, broth, veggies, and eggs for the ramen. She had mixed the ground pork and ingredients for the gyoza. The ramen noodle wasn't as hard as I picture. It was super fun to make. I think the exciting part was watching the dough went to the machine and cutting the noodle. It was super cool. Gyoza can be a little difficult to fold. However since I used to be a waitress at the Chinese restaurant and we had to make pot stickers as one of side jobs, it had became my second nature. I had fun l even offered to help fold the rest of the meat too. Kaori was so happy and said. This gonna be my family's dinner. We got to cook and eat the gyoza and ramen after we finished. They were delicious!!! Kaori is very nice and informative and able to answer all the questions we asked. She's very patient and would show us the right way to do it if she saw us struggling. We found out she teaches mochi classes with her mom too. Definitely planning the next cooking classes soon.

Took the mochi making class with my girlfriends and I had the best time ever! I absolutely love mochi so I was so excited for this class. We got to enjoy fresh mochi, mochi donut, mochi ice cream throughout the class and we got to take about half a dozen mochis home! Yukiko was so attentive and she made the class super enjoyable. The class size can host up to about 8 people and we booked our reservation through Airbnb.

    Adorable Bear Mochi's

Found Kaori's Kitchen when searching for local bakeries since our favorite home baker abruptly closed shop. It's actually kind of rare to have a scratch mochi maker/teacher anywhere, and yet, I found Kaori's Kitchen here in Hayward! This was very lucky for us, a household of mochi lovers. I ordered a plethora of combination of flavors including the matcha red bean, mango red bean, chocolate truffle, and the uber cute collection of bear mochi's. Mochi is the best when fresh and wow were they good! I think it's too bad that pick up is Saturday only, which means if I want fresh mochi mid-week, I will have to eat slightly stale ones. Also, I would love to see them make a sesame filling. In any case, I highly recommend Kaori's Kitchen!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience learning how to make mochi with Yukiko. We made a pounded rice, rose, matcha, ice cream and fried mochi. Delicious!! Yukiko was warm, funny and a great teacher! I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in making mochi.

Baking macarons is a tricky thing and Damaris did such a good job breaking down all the steps. She gave us lots of tips and tricks for our home baking, and you can see her passion for what she does. That said, I have been to several of the cooking schools in Columbus and this was my least favorite overall attendee experience. It was more expensive, yet very "basic" for lack of a better word. All of the cooking classes I have attended come with some kind of amenities - a welcome cocktail, wine bar, cheese and crackers, hot coffee/tea, etc. Something. This class was three hours long and there was nothing offered but water and iced tea (on a 20 degree day). We also did not receive any kind of information prior to the class, so parking was like solving a mystery (hint: the parking lot is behind the house down a side alleyway)

So first off I want to say I am glad my husband purchased me this gift. In theory cooking with tea…read moresounded like the coolest thing ever and it was a very thoughtful gift, but the actual experience was a bit lackluster. The Seasoned Farmhouse is a beautiful space, but the cooking class was just okay. I unfortunately didn't learn any new skills and the main reason for this review being so low is because my husband and I got food poisoning at the event. I felt sick as soon as I ate the food and didn't feel better until 24 hours later. I have lots of thoughts on why this happened, that I will explain later. Class + Recipes: The recipes we tried were good. It was a class all about learning how to cook with tea. We made Shaoxing Wine Tea-Poached Chicken with Scallion Oil, Sweet Tea-Brined Roast Chicken, Salad Greens with Golden Raisin Vinaigrette, Tea-Poached Eggs, Black Tea Poppy Seed Muffins, Earl Grey Tea Cake with Chopped Chocolate and Tea-Infused Cream Cheese Frosting and Roasted Yukon Potato Wedges with Aioli Sauce. The food tasted good and I appreciated the amount of thought that Chef Cindy Ramsey put into creating them. However, I was severely disappointed with the set-up of the class. I've been to 6 cooking classes at other locations and always was assigned to a specific station where each participant would make each dish and learn new cooking skills. This class was set-up where we were given a 20 minute lecture and then told to wash our hands and disperse to focus on different aspects of the meal. For instance I mixed the aioli sauce, iced the cake and teared lettuce leaves. Though we were told to wash our hands, we didn't wear gloves and this is what I believe caused my husband and I to get sick. Cons: Lack of cleanliness. During the demonstrations sometimes the chef would touch raw ingredients like eggs and chicken and would then touch other ingredients that would not be cooked. This leads to cross contamination and should have been avoided on the chefs behalf. In addition, because 10 different people peeled eggs, and various people touched ingredient components that would not be cooked I believe this also may be the cause of getting sick. As a science nerd let me share that we all have a different skin microbiome. Sometimes people carry more of one bacteria on their skin than others. Also depending on the length and cleanliness of finger nails, this also could cause unwanted bacteria on food that was prepared without being cooked. If these bacteria get into the ingredients, some people can get ill from them. Net: PLEASE HAVE ALL PARTICIPANTS WEAR GLOVES WHEN PREPARING FOOD, ESPECIALLY ITEMS THAT WILL NOT BE COOKED. I feel like the price of the class was not cheap and hopefully could cover the cost of gloves in the future. Based on this experience, I would not come here again and do not recommend it to someone who is looking for a more traditional style cooking class.

Intrigued (I'm infatuated with places that offer quaint happy hour deals), I quickly bookmarked Quinci, and had been wanting to try their offerings ever since. I follow QE on Insta, and I was completely engulfed in a picture they posted of their current Spring Quiche ANNNNNND the Sicilian Lemon pie. I started salivating immediately, and knew I had the try it. Also, with it being Easter weekend, what better items to show up with at the family table. Yeah, go ahead, I scored on this find. Deborah looks to run the front of house, as she's the lady I kept contact with via the phone to place and pick up my order. She was so polite. She was running the show when I arrived to pick up my goodies and was very thankful for my business. So, Gwen, did you like the quiche and pie? Uhmmmm, let me think ab- YES!!! So fluffing good, both. The quiche was not hot, and Deborah gave verbal recommendations for how to serve it if we wanted it warm; we warmed it in the oven, dear me, it was SO GOOD! I forget the exact components of this pastry, but it had plenty of eeg, spring veggies, it was incredibly decadent! I highly recommend you pay attention to their Insta page for any and all seasonal offerings, then buy one for yourself, and one for me. Thank me later. The Sicilian Lemon pie was enveloped with a flaky, but solid pastry crust - a great dessert to end the meal. Fresh lemon and zest - I can totally tell the difference between the two, and this sweet sensation was for sure the real deal! Fair warning, this was quite rich, and one piece was plenty. Sharing it with the fam and friends was the perfect solution. I was told - a year or so back, they have a Friday happy hour special for $10 that involved a charcuterie board and wine, so damn straight I need to go back to QE and check this out!
