We've come here to eat a few times now and it's always been a wonderful experience. The atmosphere is absolutely delightful. But it was not smoked in a smoker. The meat had an artificial smoke taste to it, which was fine but we were looking for smoked meat smoked in an actual smoker. The brisket and short ribs seemed to be baked in an oven to a well done, a tiny bit dry. They were still a bit moist but a lot of that comes from the fat. The seasoning didn't seem to be there. I'm not sure why other reviewers are not catching the artificial smoke, but it was basically "liquid smoke". Which is fine, if you're into that, but I want the real deal. There was no bark. The meats and rice tasted as they should but didn't have anything special to it. Nothing from Pakistan was added. The 4 sauces on the side seemed to be from a grocery store, the BBQ sauce tasted like "old baby rays" and the buffalo sauce tasted like "franks red hot" sauce. We tried very hard to find what everyone was raving about, but we didn't seem to find that. Ambiance 10/10 Customer Service 10/10 (the staff was truly amazing. Superb find during our trip to Northern Virginia - we got smoked beef short rib with side of bulgur and mixed grill with side of smoked rice. For good measure, we got hummus and fries too. The result - two very well fed people and plenty of leftovers. The mixed grill (platter of different chicken/beef/lamb meats) was delectable, the short ribs were very tender, the bulgur went nicely with the meat dishes, hummus was very creamy, and the fries were nice and crisp. Family was in town over the weekend and we feasted. Well you can see for yourself the amount of food given was more than we had imagined. It's said the kabob platter here is for 6 people, but we fed almost double and had left overs! Of course the ribs accounted for some of that also, but it is certainly a mountain of meat! However, the onion rings came out undercooked and still had raw flour on them (see picture). When we mentioned this, the waiter simply said, "I suggest not to eat it and I'll bring you another one," with no apology, which felt dismissive. Highway robbery! I really wanted to like this place, especially because I try to support Muslim-owned businesses whenever I can. Unfortunately, Kanoon ended up being one of the most uncomfortable and unnecessarily expensive dining experiences I've had in a very long time. I had just picked up my wife from the airport, and this was her first restaurant experience in the U.S., at a halal spot. I was hoping for something warm, welcoming, and representative of good hospitality. What we got was the opposite. From the moment we walked in, the service set the tone. Our waiter--a teenage girl who appeared to be related to the owner--was rude, dismissive, and shockingly arrogant. When we asked to sit at a different table, she refused, insisting we sit near the only two occupied tables. One of them was a large family with kids, and I politely explained that we'd prefer a quieter table elsewhere in the restaurant. She ignored our request entirely. The food itself was okay, nothing more. We shared a one-pound short beef rib, which was about a 6/10 at best. Not bad, but definitely not memorable or worth the price. What made it worse was discovering that every side dish was charged separately, without this being clearly explained upfront. What we assumed were standard sides turned out to be add-ons. Then came the bill. An 18% gratuity was already included, which is fine--but on top of that, the server came back with a credit card reader pushed into my face, prompting me to select an additional 10%, 15%, or 20% tip. When I asked her to clarify, she confirmed the 18% gratuity was already included. I asked why I was being prompted for more. Her answer? "Extra." At that point, it genuinely felt like we were being taken advantage of. The attitude, the lack of transparency, and the pressure for more money--especially in front of my wife, on her very first day in the U.S.--was embarrassing and infuriating. When I declined the extra tip, she rolled her eyes and walked away. I almost asked for the manager, but the damage was already done. I truly want to support Muslim businesses, but Kanoon made that incredibly difficult. Between the poor service, hidden charges, forced gratuity, and awkward tip pressure, this experience felt less like dining out and more like highway robbery. As someone who eats Halal, it's really hard to find a good steakhouse. Although I've only ever ordered through UberEats each aspect has been exquisite. The meat is so juicy and tender, and they cook so quickly. It is great to experience this while still eating Halal. It is a little pricy, but comparatively it's pretty good.
