Wow! Absolutely fabulous. The regular Afghan restaurant we go to changed their hours and are no longer open for lunch on the weekends. Such a shame. Oh well, ever onward! It gave us the opportunity to try a new place... which is actually closer to home. Our first time here, we picked up a takeaway. The presentation wasn't much to look at but based on the taste, I knew I would be back. We ordered Chicken Breast Kebab, Barg Kebab and Herati Kebab, all from their Keto menu. The next time we dined in. If you want to get your money's worth, this is definitely the way to go. (I don't know if it was a one-off but we got half the food when we ordered the takeaway.) This time we ordered Sardari Kebab and the Lamb Chops. We also ordered the Lamb Shank with the Kabuli rice to take home for dinner. Their lamb is really tender and flavourful. The lamb shank was a little fatty but that what you get sometimes with lamb shank. The Kabuli rice is phenomenal and will be included in every order going forward! Oh, and their naan is really good too. Today I found myself there yet again. Continuing to work my way through their menu, I opted for their Beef Kofta Kebab and my friend ordered their Chicken Breast Kebab. We both had the Kabuli rice. Everything was delicious. The restaurant is spacious and nicely structured for a good flow. The staff are very pleasant and there's just an overall great vibe here. I love the flavours of all the Afghan food I've had in the past so I was looking forward to the opening of Kandahar Kabab in Pickering, close to home. They have a fairly big menu to choose from, including chicken, beef, veal, lamb, fish, and vegetarian dishes. I decided on the Chaplie Kabab, which was two ground beef patties, rice, salad, and naan. At only $12.50, it was a great deal for the generous portion size. It was spicier than I had anticipated but the flavour was good. This was a good meal. Unfortunately, the rest of my experience at Kandahar Kabab left a lot to be desired. Upon walking in, one of the first things I noticed was trays and litter on a lot of the tables. They hadn't been cleared. I later saw a young girl clearing and sanitizing tables while frequently checking her phone. Their order/pickup counter is located across the back of the restaurant, with the menu displayed on a cluster of six TVs. It looked attractive until I tried to read it. The fonts were so small, I was squinting. To make things worse, the screens kept changing content. The people behind me had the same problem. Luckily, I spotted a page taped to the counter which had a QR Code that I scanned to access the menu on my phone. I placed and paid for my order and joined the other people waiting around at the counter. Apparently, some of them were getting frustrated with the wait time. It was easy to see in their expressions. The wait turned out to be 25 minutes for me. Yes, they were busy, but they also didn't seem to know what they were doing. Some of the staff seemed to be standing around waiting for instructions. The noise level was fairly high, with a lot of echoes, due mainly to the hard wall and ceiling surfaces. This could easily be fixed with sound absorbing panels. The counter staff shouting out pickup numbers didn't help. I finally got my food and found a clean table near the entrance. While eating, I noticed a man and woman kinda wandering around the restaurant, occasionally puttering around with taping up signs and then sitting and eating. I assume they were managers. She was nicely dressed while he was very casual in sweatpants, running shoes, and baseball cap. Neither was wearing a mask. Am I being too harsh? Were these issues the result of new inexperienced staff? Maybe some of it, but with the experience of their other locations, they could/should have been better prepared. Ordered pickup from Kandahar. The food is always good but the service is pathetic. The servers are super rude. Uber eats said food was ready for pickup but we had to wait for 20min to actually pick up food. This has happened multiple times when we order food for pickup and it is never ready on time. We come back only because food is good but if I can find same food elsewhere, I will stop coming here. The staff is the absolute worst. Kandahar Kabab had been listed as a coming restaurant for a bit. I saw it on the way to the LCBO quite often. I was rather interested in trying to place because I like kabab. One day while at the plaza I saw it was finally open so I decided to check it out. It is set up as a fast-casual type dining experience. You order at the front at the counter and then find yourself a seat. They give you a little page which goes off once the food is ready. We ordered a lamb kabob and a sardari kabab. The menu was pretty expansive and had many difference choices for us to choose from. The food was about 16 dollars a plate plus 5 dollars for mango lassi. The meal ended up being about 45 dollars with tax for two people, which isn't a cheap meal by any means. They do have about six screens which have the menu, but the menu on the screens are not designed well. The fonts are too hard to read. I ended up using the QR code. The restaurant seemed busy, almost all the tables were taken. The wait was about 20 minutes for food. If you want a comprehensive review of Kandahar Kabab (Pickering) then check my earlier review. This is just an update. My husband, daughter and I ordered from Kandahar Kebab. We are all on Keto right now (my husband made the decision to do this, and since I pay for the groceries, my bill is rising constantly to meet (or, shall we say, meat) the protein demands of this diet). The cooking, along with a full time job, can get fatiguing, and I can't just fall back on noodles, pasta, rice, grilled cheese, or even cheese and bread, any more. No carbs. On a recent Friday night, I really did not have the spirit to cook. So we ordered from Kandahar. This is a VERY KETO FRIENDLY place. Sorry to shout with those caps, but if you are on Keto and ordering from Kandahar, all you have to do is say the word 'KETO" and they know what to do. We went with lamb. I had a cheat night (I didn't need to lose any weight) and ordered the signature Kandhari Lamb Shank with the special Kabuli Palow, which I adore. I was fairly faithful to the diet, just a few bites of that wonderful rice, studded with carrots and raisins, elegantly and discreetly spiced, and froze the rest. Righteous!! I loved the tender lamb shank so much. My daughter had lamb chops and my husband my husband had lamb chops with a Beef Kabab. Neither of these was on Kandahar Kabab's official Keto menu, but Kandahar Kabab knew just what to do to adapt the sides to suit Keto, and we had our perfect dinner. I absolutely love their food. The servings are well worth the $$. I go there at least once a week. However, the staff has something to be desired. Many times I have been there always around dinner time. These employees are on their phones, talking amongst each other, kitchen staff one day were even playing flip cup, totally ignoring the line that was forming. I have heard other customers complaining as well. You have an amazing product. It sells itself. Now, if you found the proper people to execute that, you would be sitting on a gold mine. I am writing to discuss a very a disappointing experience that we had on October 7th, 2022 at the restaurant on Brock Road, Pickering. We have enjoyed their excellent food in the past and we have always been very satisfied with the service. We have eaten at this restaurant, as well as other Kandahar Kabab locations. The one on Brock Road is especially convenient because we use the car charger at this location. On October 7th, we arrived home after a trip and we were making our way back to Millbrook, where we live. We decided to stop to get food for ourselves and also for our son who was at home. We arrived at the restaurant at approximately 9:45pm and ordered two shawarma sandwiches and a kabab plate. The difficulty began with the debit purchase. The young lady at the till was distracted and she was not paying attention as I tried to pay. The order came to $41.13. I was not sure she had heard the order properly as she was waving and yelling to a food delivery person in the line behind me. She was laughing and not looking at the ATM. She said the order did not go through and I believed that this was correct. We had a problem with this debit card earlier so I switched to my other card and the employee set up the purchase again. I completed the transaction and handed back the debit machine. She was laughing with the young male behind me again. He was standing back a bit and she had to lean and yell to converse with him. It was quite unprofessional, but I was not yet concerned. The cashier now told me that this second attempt was declined and that I needed to pay again. I asked if she was sure and she was abrupt, telling me to pay again. I did so but told her that the debit machine had told me it went through successfully. I asked her to check the printouts. She looked at them and told me that both attempts were unsuccessful. The third was successful. I saw the look on her face and did not think it seemed right. I asked to see the printout and she told me it was ok on the third attempt only. I asked again to see the record and she told me only then that the second was also successful, so I needed a refund. I was very concerned that she had deliberately misled me. Without another word to me, she began speaking to another employee in a language that I did not understand. I had no issue with that but it's important to note that I was completely unaware of all that was taking place. She handed me $41.13 cash without any apology or explanation and continued speaking with the male standing back behind me, and to the other employee. I made no comment or complaint, but the cashier was not friendly at this point. There were a total of four front employees, all being young females. They were laughing with each other and with the staff in the cooking area, through the window. The young lady who had served me was looking at her social media on her phone and showing the others. The fourth employee seemed to be getting ready to leave. She put on a coat and left the store. The remaining three appeared to be joking and socializing. The store was not busy and there were very few, if any customers after us. We saw the two sandwiches appear promptly but we waited for the kabab plate. A styrofoam container was handed through the kitchen window and it sat on the counter by the window. Another bagged order appeared on the counter by the till. We waited as the employees laughed and looked at the phone. We wondered if the container was our food but we assumed that it could not be. The girls all left the front and went to the back of the store. I had tried to get their attention but they did not appear to notice. I went over to look at the doorway and I could see them in the back, joking with a male at what appeared to be a doorway into a fridge. I could not get their attention. I went back to the till and looked at the bag on the counter to see if it was my food. It was not. When the girls returned, my wife asked if the Styrofoam container was ours. It had been sitting for 5-10 minutes in front of them. It was my kabab plate. The girl put it in a bag with salad that was in a pile, already prepared. She could have done this long ago. The cashier seemed annoyed with me for having caught her error, or her attempted deception, and we were unsure of how this delay could have been unintentional. It's possible that they were distracted but it's also possible that they were laughing at us and the delay that we were experiencing. My wife commented that the food had been sitting for more than five minutes. The cashier said nothing but she smirked at my wife. The two other employees came closer and all three seemed to be smirking. I asked for the contact information for the manager or owner. I was told to Google it as she laughed.
