went here for a cheap wine tasting of $10 and it is nice that they waive this fee if you buy a bottle. but, the wine tasting was very underwhelming... could not sit down at the bar area because no chairs available. staff did a good job in memorizing the winery menu and seemed knowledgeable about the winemaking process, but the social cues and connection was lacking. felt no warmth in the conversation -- very robotic. This was our first stop wine tasting in the Yakima area. The tasting room has such a pleasant vibe. Tasting fee is $5 and you get to taste 7 wines (2 whites and 5 reds) Tasting fee is waived if you purchased a bottle. Suzanne poured the wines for us and she was the best! She explained all the wines, the labels are beautiful and are created by a local artist. She was so sweet to get pop corn for my kids. Kana does not grow its own grapes, but instead buys from vineyards like Champoux Vineyards which is ranked as one of the top ten vineyards in the nation. The downtown location is great for relaxing and enjoying a quiet afternoon of wine tasting. All the wines were robust and very high quality. There is a little something for everyone. I don't generally like Chardonnay, but this Chardonnay is created in steel barrels and is very smooth. The Tempranillo is very good and if you like Cab you will love this. The Dark Star is a meritage blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre that is very smooth. My personal favorite. read more

My husband and I stopped in here during our walking tour of the many downtown Yakima wineries and breweries. The staff greeted us with a warm welcome and promptly poured us each a tasting ($5/each). They explained each of their wines as we tasted them (their reds were my favorite) and gave us informative tips about where we should visit during our visit to Prosser and Zillah the next day. The First Friday of each month always features live music. Kana is a cozy place to have a glass (or bottle) of wine and enjoy a local band. This is my absolute favorite winery in Yakima! Great atmosphere, great people, and great music can be found here. The staff goes above and beyond in their customer service and makes everyone feel welcome whether they are regulars or new! I recently went back in after not visiting in a long while. I had left a coat of mine last winter when I had a bit too much wine, and never knew what happened to it. When I went in last night, Megan (the wonderful lady behind the counter) returned it to me. She remembered all those months ago that I was the one who had left it and kept it safe for me until my next visit! You cannot get more special service than that!! Life has been pretty busy which has been why I haven't made it back in a while, but I was reminded by this act that I need to make the time to go back in more often. I ended up getting 1 riesling, 2 Dark Star (which was my favorite because it is a syrah blend), and 3 Workingman's Red (my husband's fave). The pros of the winery include location, conveniently located in downtown Yakima within walking distance of other places. Live entertainment is here frequently which creates an atmospheric and cozy environment, and this is the primary reason to come here. Unfortunately the wine itself misses the mark. I've done a full tasting here and each red I tasted was assaulting in the acidity. It's unfortunate that the worker leading the tasting had limited knowledge and spoke heavily of how "beautifully acidic" each wine is. That's not a plus to me. read more

Where do I start with Kana Winery? They were our first stop on this past weekend's Wine Yakima Valley Spring Barrel Tasting. We bought our $35 PREMIER PASSES there. It's an in-town tasting room and, not knowing anything about the winery, I wasn't sure what to expect. There were two ladies behind the bar pouring tastes and the owner was roaming around and shmoozing with tasters. So, we bellied up to the bar and made our way through the wine tasting menu and...found Nirvana. It has been DECADES since my lovely wife and I tasted so many wines with flavor and richness and depth of character that fairly leaped out of the glass. These days you're lucky if you find even one varietal you like at a tasting room. The problem with most corporate and custom crush wines and just about every wine you find on the supermarket shelves is that most of them are insipid and lacking flavor. Sure, they're cleanly made wines, but mass market, no character and for many of them, barely any flavor. The ladies serving up the tastes were friendly, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. One of the requirements of the tastings was BYOG, as in glass. Oops! This being our first time attending this even we were so eager to hit the tasting rooms we forgot to bring our own wine glasses. Not to worry at Kana. They were happy to provide "loaners" as every wine tasting room I've ever been in (and the two I worked in) have provided. To the wines, dear friends! Just so you know, the owner and winemaker have Grateful Dead motif running through the wine names. They reds were all great but for me, there were two standouts. The first was the 2010 Workingman's Red, one of the best red blends I've ever tasted. And do you know how rare it is to not only taste but find a red wine with a vintage before 2015? This wine has stood the test of time. The second was the 2010 Scarlet Fire, their reserve red. The complexity and depth of the flavors blew us away. We finished the tasting with their slightly sweet 2013 Johannisberg Riesling, named Katie Mae. Now, 2013 is getting a bit old for a white wine, especially one on the sweet. Not the Katie Mae, She was still a youthful nymph dancing away at a Dead concert way back when. Totally delicious. Kana Winery, as I like to say, is the real stuff. There wasn't a clunker in the bunch. If you're looking for delicious wines of full blown flavor, depth, and character, please stop by. The tasting room staff will make you feel at home. We had an amazing evening at Kana winery! The staff (and owner) were incredibly friendly and the tasting included seven very generous pours. The wine was delicious and we even learned a bit about the grower/vinter relationship. Kana sources it's grapes from the best vineyards rather than growing their own. This way, the owner/vinter (Palmer) can focus on what he does best: creating Rhône style wines. Kana staff understand safe social distancing and sanitized the table prior to us sitting down. Since Yakima County is still in Phase I, we enjoyed our evening on the patio and had fun conversing with locals (from six feet away, of course). We loved the convenient location in downtown Yakima, as we were able to walk to dinner and our hotel following the tasting. Our visit was phenomenal. The daytime ambience is relaxed and the room is designed with character and interesting decor. They have low and high tables. There were EIGHT wines for the tasting, and our server even added another, different year of one of the same wines. Tasting fee is waived when you buy, and boy did we buy! It's not often I enjoy so many wines from one place, but Kana really delivered -- from whites to reds. And at great, low price points. Many award-winners and 90-point wines to enjoy. Located in the historic Larson Building, built in 1931, and tallest building in downtown Yakima. Kana's space restored to a 1930's dated charm (and almost bohemian), including its 20 ft. high windows and ceiling. Open mic last night was great, including a Nashville musician transplant to Yakima playing and singing solo. The owner, Palmer, was great on his acoustic guitar instrumentals. Excellent wine, especially DARK STAR red blend and a double gold medal scoring Chardonnay. For our annual college friends reunion we ended up in Yakima for some wine tasting and good food. After not having much of a plan we ended up at Kana Winery and I have truly never had a better time with a serving staff. Megan was a true gem who served our rowdy group and made the experience at Kana our favorite of the entire weekend. I seriously cannot say enough good things about Megan; she was HILARIOUS, so nice to everyone in my group, and seemed to genuinely love what she was doing. At the end of our trip we were all having a final breakfast together, reminiscing about the great weekend we had together and Megan was brought up as a highlight by multiple people. The wine was delicious but Megan's customer service was far beyond what we expected, especially for a larger group that could be seen as extra work. Granted it was 20 minutes to closing, Chris our wine server was not interested in hearing what we had to say. We were talking and he interrupted us with his presentations of the next wine. I get it, you want to go home. I worked food service for many years, and I would never think so highly of self that I had the right to interrupt my customers mid-sentence. Granted he knew his stuff, he even has a two year degree in wine, but really guy?? ... Learn some manners and suck it up and earn your tip... Even though we did anyways since we have manners. I'm not trying to be mean, but just honest coming from someone who lived off of tips for over five years. Not ussually ranty like this, but service makes or breaks you. I took my wife here for the Wine and Chocolate tour over Valentine's day weekend. This ranked as our favorite for several reasons. First, we were lucky enough to have met the Winemaker, Ben Grossman, and despite the crowd we basically had him to ourself during the visit. He shared his background and his vision of what he intends for Kana. It was exciting to hear the passion and experience in his telling of that vison. Second, their wines are fantastic! One of the whites was a bit complex and hard for our palette to understand, but overall the reds were a knockout and we left with several bottles including the Dark Star and Old Vines - although if we'd have been equipped to buy all of their Syrah we would have. I highly recommend Kana to anyone planning a tour to Yakima. read more
