Tucked away in downtown Elmhurst, is Kan Ya. It's always very quiet inside, dinner crowd doesn't really come in till after 6pm- weekday and weekends! I've been here twice now and both times the ramen did not disappoint! However, I hate that you have to pay $1-3 for additional toppings. The first time I got the Spicy Chicken Ramen which wasn't super spicy but still very good! Recently, I went again and got the crispy chicken ramen. It was pretty good, however the chicken is hard to cut into pieces while eating. Wish it was cut up for you because there just huge chunks of it! Overall, it's a clean restaurant, the ramen is good, and the service is quick.
We did not eat lunch and were out shopping when we started craving ramen. We decided to come here at around 5:30 pm on a Friday and the restaurant was fairly empty. We picked where we wanted to sit and were able to order quickly. I got the tempura brussel sprouts, which are supposed to be coated with truffle oil and the premium tonkotsu combo ramen. First, the tempura brussel sprouts came out. They looked nice and had a nice crunch, but there was absolutely no truffle flavor. I tried to just eat them as is but wanted to get some sauce. I guess asking was too much, however. When I asked one of the servers(with glasses), if it was possible to get some tempura sauce, she seemed very short tempered. She preceded to raise her voice and say it didn't come with sauce and that the oil was on it. I tried to ask if I could purchase some if necessary, but I never got the chance because she just kept talking over me. She finally asked "well what sauce do you want, spicy or what?" I just said spicy to get her to leave, and then she pointed to the pepper paste on the table , said there it was, and walked away. Now for the ramen. The broth was a mix of chicken and pork broth, and it was very flavorful with a slight smoky flavor. The chicken and pork chasu were both nice and thick. The noodles, however, were hard and not what I expected for ramen. This was strange since my girlfriend's noodles were different and much better. Without my experience with the server, I would have rated this place 4 stars for the unique broth flavor. Unfortunately, customer service is a big part of enjoying a restaurant. Maybe I will try this place again, but I doubt it will be soon.
We were in the area so came here on a whim and we were not disappointed! We each ordered a different spicy pork ramen and were both delicious (though not very spicy, so nothing to fear!) I particularly really liked my partner's ramen which had the ground porn in it - very beautifully seasoned! Additionally, it was also a very generous amount of noodles! We also ordered the tempura maki I believe it was... which was also delicious and does have a little bit of a kick to it (just enough, nothing too spicy). Of course, I paired all of this with a Saporro beer which was great! The staff was also very friendly and attentive. I would 100% come back here again and recommend to others for yet another great ramen spot!
Came here for dinner and it was completely empty on Tuesday evening at 6ish pm. I ordered the black tonkotsu and I was pleasantly surprised. The broth is so full of umami and garlic flavor and the chasu was melt in your mouth and buttery. I wish i ordered extra meat. They also have spicy chili paste and some type of garlic soy jalapeno sauce?? Anyways I added both of those to my broth and it just turned up the flavor to the next level. It was the bright and piquant peppery notes from the chili really elevated the dark garlic and umami notes from the broth and contrasted the rich creaminess. The flavor became so complex and addicting. The only downside is that the noodles they used were thin and I don't think they're very authentic or high quality ramen noodles. They were soft and one-dimensional and very pale white. Quality ramen noodles should be more of a bright yellow, and chewy and hardy. If this bowl had those type of noodles it would be easily a 10/10.
Food was good and full of flavor, and service was super quick. Convenient parking spaces right outside the restaurant. The mango and pineapple fruit freeze was delicious!
PAID $29.59 for 10pc crispy chicken and 2 drinks to get that ridiculous amount of sauce . Went back to ask for more sauce was asked to pay $3.10 from what I already paid. Then received back HALF of the moment of the small container. why are you guys so cheap? Cough up some more sauce it won't hurt you that's what makes your dish the SAUCE if not then it's not that good.
Had dinner here on 3/15/2025. Had the original ramen & squid balls. The ramen broth was lacking. It tasted watered down. Not flavor-infused at all. The egg in the ramen tasted ginger-infused which could be delicious to some but I did not like it. The ramen itself was bland. Something was lacking with their food. Service was efficient. Place was clean. Not raring to go back.
Kan Ya was cooking up some good Japanese food at a really affordable price. Visited the location during dinner time and got the standard char siu ramen bowl with karaage. The food was well-priced (below $10 USD per dish) and was delivering some serious flavor. The broth was very savory and rich (personally a little too salty for my taste). The karaage was standard and solid. The noodles had nice chew and bite. Overall, a good spot for ramen.
Today I had the Tokyo Ramen for lunch. All three pieces of Pork were completely fatty, absolutely no meat on them. I had to put them aside on a separate plate in order to eat my ramen. The waitress never asked how we were enjoying the food or anything related to the separated pieces. The rest of the ramen was nothing special and the broth was rather bland. Furthermore it took forever to get our food out and they weren't even that busy. 2 stars because the Brussels sprouts tempura was pretty good.
Came here for lunch on a Sunday and it wasn't busy which was really nice. We ordered an app and two ramen bowls. I will caution that the ramen bowls are MASSIVE and could easily be for two people. The staff was very friendly and attentive to the tables. The restaurant was clean and organized as well. The atmosphere was authentic and calming. The prices were great too! I would definitely recommend!
I came here in a pinch to grab something quick for lunch and it was average food. Quality- the garlic tonkatsu ramen broth was very light and tastes like hot water with just some ramen seasoning from a packet. There wasn't much special with it because it tasted cheap. The slices of meat were decent but the egg was a bit over cooked (not much yolk spilled out, and the noodles were normal). The pieces of chicken looks crispy but it really wasn't when I but into it. It was a bit mushy. The meat inside was also a bit dry. The vegetables were fresh but the sauce was too tangy for the mushy chicken. I would have preferred something savory to dip into. Quantity- it was on the pricier end. Spent about 30 bucks for both of these items. Not worth it. Atmosphere- nice interior. Service- pretty good.
I love love love coming here it's like 40 minutes from home but I don't care I love this place I usually come for the ramen , the veggie one is my favorite and the vibe are simple and cute inside Service can be a little slow sometimes but It's not a deal breaker for me
The restaurant looks clean, is comfortable and staff were welcoming and nice. I can't recommend the tonkotsu ramen. Broth flavor was bland and had an oily film. It didn't come hot but luke warm. The noodles couldn't have been house made, texture was heavy and starchy. The pork was mostly fat. While the staff was kind at greeting, the restaurant was essentially empty and I was never offered a water refill until the offer of my check.

We ate dinner here on a week night around 6pm. Luckily we beat the small rush of people arriving for dinner. Service was quick and the food was good. Their eggs were amazing and the pork was very tender. read more

Had high expectations for this place. Started off strong with the edamame and the fried pork gyoza- which were great. I liked the truffle ono myself, but it was heavy on the truffle so if you are not a fan, steer clear. The only roll I really enjoyed was the dream roll. I did not enjoy the golden yellow tail. The unagi and the four seasons were just ok. It's a shame because the staff is great and location is perfect read more

The food was beautiful and the presentation was great for the sushi rolls. The ramen was just okay in my opinion. Although we ordered 2 spicy ramen, neither was spicy and the broth could have used the spicy flavor. When asked if we could have more of the chili sauce to add to the broth, they directed me to the siracha that was on the table. I have never had a ramen restaurant not give me a separate sauce to add spice to my broth! The sushi was good, but the thick roll we order had too many flavors and was a bit too big to eat in one bite. read more

It is difficult to find a great ramen shop in the area. I have a few of my favorite miso ramen, shio ramen and soy ramen shops. But I have never met a good tonkotsu ramen bowl until today. Their black rich tonkotsu ramen tasted like a genuine tonkotsu ramen from Japan. I heard the chef learnt ramen cooking in Japan for only 4 years. The flavor is definitely there. I did like the soup flavor, cha siu pork and flavored eggs in the bowl. Will probably go back there when I feel like tonkotsu ramen from now on. My co workers tried umami miso ramen, I did not try it but they said it tasted good, too! If you are not good with spicy food, mild umami miso or black rich tonkotsu are less spicy than others. I rated for four stars, not 5 because of couple of reasons below. Temperature: some toppings are pretty cold for a freezing day out side. Also the room temperature is pretty cold too. We could not take off jackets while we were eating. Parking: there is no designated parking lot for the shop. You have to find a parking spot somewhere in the Elmhurst downtown and walk for a while. Price: our bowl is about $16 on the menu. Added tax and tips it will be about $20. It is a little pricey ramen bowl, and after we ate the whole bowl, we were not full either. So it was a little unsatisfying for a ramen hunt trip. read more

Definitely a great safety option for ramen! Me and my cousins came here last weekend. First we were not attended for 5 minutes so I had to get up and ask to at least get some waters in our table. We ordered 3 appetizers and did not get small plates for them. We ordered the mild ramen brother but barely tasted anything so next time we will order hot. If you like spicyness maybe hot is for you too but I have not tried it yet so I can't say if it's good or not. I also got the ginger soda and it was delicious. It's not the canned soda, but the one in the glass bottle with real bits of ginger in it! I definitely plan on coming back. My ramen was delicious and the portions are huge. You definitely cannot finish this $16 bowl in one sitting which I don't mind. It is overpriced so I do wish they offered a smaller option for bowl sizes. The staff is friendly they just need to be attentive with their tables. read more

I'm new to ramen, but I do know that my meal was delicious! I ordered a pork bun and the garlic lovers ramen. The egg was cooked perfectly and the pork - OH LORD, THE PORK- was super tender. Delicious... The pork bun was not how I pictured it looking, or tasting, but that doesn't mean it wasn't delicious. I love how tender the pork is and how the bun us so fluffy and melts in your mouth. I'm not sure what the sauce was, but it paired well with the cucumber and pork. I recommend giving it a try! I will definitely DoorDash them again next time I'm craving ramen. But next time I'll add lots more veggies to my ramen. read more

*pre covid review* My bf and I have been here a couple times now. The first time we came I really liked the broth and the toppings of the Tonkotsu Spicy Shoyu. I ate my whole bowl including all the broth. On my personal ramen ranking I thought it was similar to Furious Spoon and probably would have rated it at 4 stars. Unfortunately the last time we came, the same bowl of ramen didn't taste the same. The broth tasted different and was significantly less flavorful. The Chasu (even looking at the photos) is definitely different and was not nearly as good as the first time. Right now I am at 3 stars for Kan Ya but I may still try it one more time to see if it was just a fluke. read more

I came for a quick lunch and left feeling exactly in the middle with this place. I ordered the crispy chicken and the Tokyo Tonkotsu. Pros: The fried chicken was super crispy and is the reason why I would probably come back. I do wish they served it with a creamy sauce instead of a soy base, but that's just my personal preference. They also use dark meat instead of boring chicken breast so bonus points there. Also, the noodles in my ramen were perfectly chewy and the whole egg that came with it was the textbook soft boil egg that ramen so deserves. Cons: The restaurant itself was really dark. There wasn't much natural light or lamps in the place. My ramen was advertised to be for garlic lovers but the broth tasted pretty bland, and definitely didn't have any strong garlic taste. If anything, the raw onions and green onion overpowered the dish. It was also one of the more expensive ramens costing around $14 and the only special ingredient I can think of was that it came with a whole egg, rather than a half. I'm glad Elmhurst is stepping up their Asian cuisines so I will return because unfortunately this is the closest ramen shop near me. It's aight. read more

The ramen is amazing here! Absolutely no complaints on the quality or the service either. Food always comes out relatively quickly and tastes great! The atmosphere is pretty nice too, not too cramped or loud. However, unlike other ramen places I've been to, the ramen's are fairly basic in what else is included other than the broth, noodles, and protein. The add ons get pretty expensive which is not ideal. Other than that however, a very enjoyable experience. read more
Decent food, cozy restaurant setting in DT Elmhurst. Had the tonkotsu ramen, brussel sprouts, and karaage. Wish there were more menu options for bentos, ramen, sides. Looks like they used to serve sushi at one point but no longer do. read more
Solid 3 stars for AOK. While I didn't love Kan Ya, I didn't dislike it either. It might even be our new take-out spot for "Ok, but not ecstatic about ramen" nearby. There just aren't many very good ramen options within a 10 mile radius from me if I'm looking for convenience. I placed a take-out order for the following: Golden shrimp, Chicken fried rice and Tonkatsu Black Rich ramen. Shrimp was impressively cooked; plump and tender. Golden sauce is made with egg yolks, so it's a bit rich. While I enjoyed it, I felt it was missing some flavor. I really loved their fried rice; so light and fresh tasting with a good amount of chicken and vegetables...no msg detected. I wouldn't say the Tonkatsu lived up to the "black rich" description. Broth was tasty and mild but no real depth here. I appreciated the garlic oil & chips, well cooked egg, and tender pork chashu. Ingredients were great but the big downer for me were the noodles. They didn't taste or look like the ramen noodles I've had in the past. More thin and translucent; definitely missing that toothsome bite. You can't have great ramen, without great noodles.. Our to-go order was right on time and nicely packed with friendly service. If they switched up their noodles, it'd make a big difference.. They're more than just ramen, so give the menu a try.. You might really like it.. read more
Disappointed. The place is nice and clean, casual, nothing extravagant. The service was good. Very disappointed in the food. The ramen was so flavorless. I got the veggie and my husband got fish broth. Both were tasteless. I added so much chili to mine to feel something but yet nothing. The sushi was ok. Overpriced in my opinion. I'll stick to udon and sushi at sushi next around the corner. read more
