We did takeout of the Goan Shrimp Curry, Sweet Potato Masala, Meat Samosa & plain Naan. All were still warm by the time we ate them at home. Naan was soft and samosas still a bit crispy. The shrimp curry had lots of shrimp, and the sauce as well was tasty with a shrimp-infused flavor. The disappointment was the Sweet Potato Masala. I love sweet potatoes, but the ones in the masala were tough and dry. We eventually picked them out and enjoyed just the sauce over the naan and rice. I tried to send the feedback via the website. I'd say compared to back home basic at best . I think if you live here and crave Indian your options are limited and this is as good as it gets locally for Indian . 3.5 stars is where it would land for me but gave them a 4 since that wasn't an option . The management at this place sucks. I called to make reservations for valentine day for 2 ppl. They told me "no need to reserve just come in we will have a table for you". Comes valentine day and I find out they not even open!!! Totally screwed me up on a big day like that. Didn't even offer anything to resolve this. Completely incompetent. We were half way through our trip and as an Indian were craving for Indian food badly. Surprised to see this restaurant on yelp, we didn't think it would be that authentic. But let me tell you they offer the best taste of India! We were so full and we visited again while leaving Hilo. Highlt recommend it. The lunch thalis are just delicious. This is by far the best Indian restaurant I have ever eaten at! The food is authentic and each dish has its own unique flavor...I have been to Indian restaurants where everything tastes the same, but that is definitely not the case here! The majority of restaurants in Hilo are either Japanese/Chinese or some kind of Asian fusion, but Kamana Kitchen is a nice change from those other Asian restaurants. The restaurant is spacious and the staff are all extremely friendly. I have been there a few times and it was never overly crowded and I've always been seated immediately. I did go once for some holiday with my family and it was a little crowded, but our food still came out very quickly. I love this place and can't wait for my next meal there! Edit: business is starting to pick up, so each subsequent visit, there have been more and more people. If you're trying to go on a weekend, you might want to call and make a reservation just in case. I've moved to Oahu from a location that had very good Indian Food. I've tried so many places on Oahu and decided to try an Indian restaurant on Big Island. This restaurant is the one of the best restaurant on Big Island, and the BEST Indian restaurant in all of Hawaii! Tikka Masala was spot on and the naan was amazing. Their spice levels are mild, medium, hot and super hot so I got the medium chicken curry (which was VERY spicy, will prob get mild next time). So far, I've had Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Makhani, Veg and Meat samosas and a couple other appetizers. All have been delicious! If you like Thai curry, you'll like Tikka Masala and Makhani. The veg samosa filling was a bit like spices and stuff mixed with mashed potatoes but, if you've had Japanese vegetable croquette, the texture won't bother you. The crust is flaky and the filling on both veg and meat was very generous! The naan is so good and reheats WONDERFULLY in a toaster oven. Assorted Pakora is like tempura but with a different batter. One of the best vegan options we've had on the Big Island. We've tried many all-vegan places and Kamana takes the cake, although not without flaws. We dined in and ordered the veggie samosa, aloo gobi, baigan bharta, and the daal soup. Each dish was tasty and not too oily. My favorite was the baigan bharta. Some downsides: each dish came with rice that tasted a bit funky, almost metallic, and the dining area was poorly lit with seat cushions falling apart. Maybe order takeout instead.
