Never had Indian food before trying this place but seeing so much of it on Food Network, I wanted to try. I'm so glad I did! So far, I've had Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Makhani, Veg and Meat samosas and a couple other appetizers. All have been delicious! If you like Thai curry, you'll like Tikka Masala and Makhani. The veg samosa filling was a bit like spices and stuff mixed with mashed potatoes but, if you've had Japanese vegetable croquette, the texture won't bother you. The crust is flaky and the filling on both veg and meat was very generous! The naan is so good and reheats WONDERFULLY in a toaster oven. Assorted Pakora is like tempura but with a different batter. My husband and I came in for dinner and the restaurant was about half full. We were seated immediately and given water but it took a little while for them to give us menus. I ordered the Chicken Makhani, Lamb Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, (all medium heat) Garlic Naan, and Paratha. The food took a while but was totally worth the wait. The Chicken Makhani was cooked perfectly and was so delicious!! The Lamb Tikka Masala was also good and had quite a bit of Lamb in it. The Aloo Gobi was ok. The Garlic Naan was very good. One of the best vegan options we've had on the Big Island. We've tried many all-vegan places and Kamana takes the cake, although not without flaws. We dined in and ordered the veggie samosa, aloo gobi, baigan bharta, and the daal soup. Each dish was tasty and not too oily. My favorite was the baigan bharta. Some downsides: each dish came with rice that tasted a bit funky, almost metallic, and the dining area was poorly lit with seat cushions falling apart. Maybe order takeout instead. My boyfriend had the chicken tiki marsala and I had the chicken makhini (buttered chicken) you can choose your spice level which we chose mild. Wish i got it hotter. Both curries came with rice and we ordered garlic naan on the side. The tiki marsala is a tomato and yogurt based sauce and the makhini tasted just like the other curry, but sweeter. Words cannot describe how happy I am that Hilo finally has a good Indian Restaurant. I am heads deep with infatuation, and I don't think there's any chance of saving me. For $12.95 I got the lamb curry special. The naan was heavenly and the extra sides were everything and more, especially the yellow dahl. My friend had the $11.95 chickan tikka masala. I will be honest-I am not very experienced or knowledgeable about Indian food-but as far as amazing food goes, this place offers something for everyone, I think! Their tandoori chicken is a dish that most people (who eat meat) would find easy to like. Yet, everything I have tried from this restaurant has been quality and you can taste the amount of time and care that was put into making the dish. So glad that this restaurant is here in Hilo. It was approximately $12.00 more than I expected to pay. Despite my initial disbelief I paid the amount and thought to myself their prices must have increased since I last been here. Stale and reheated food with rude servers. We ordered 4 curries, 4 naan breads and a fried appetizer, all of which he brought in just over 5 minutes, the first sign of reheated food. The naan felt like it was from their buffet earlier that afternoon. After notifying the server that the food was not fresh and the naan bread was cold, the servers not only rudely denied it by saying "If you don't appreciate fast service I can't do anything" but also crowded our table with three employees shouting we are wrong about food quality. Not exactly what you expect in a paid dining service. They responded to a complaint with denial and harassment. Underserving business selling bad food and service. The pakora was burned but doughy on the inside, the potatoes in the samosa were too mushy, and the palak paneer was gritty- the spinach had not been washed well enough. Despite being nearly empty, we had lethargic service, and there were cartoons playing on the TV on the wall the entire time (we visited in the mid-afternoon). There was no atmosphere whatsoever. We had the chicken tiki-masala, aloo paratha, and cheese naan. The tiki-masala was mediocre, and the chicken was average. The bread of the aloo paratha was a little lacking in flavor, and the potato and pea filling was a bit bland. The cheese naan was effectively a bad quesadilla you might make for yourself at 3:30am on the third day of a bender when all you have in your fridge are nearly dried out tortillas and some cheap cheddar cheese (yes, I'm nearly positive this was cheddar--it certainly wasn't paneer). They do offer Taj Mahal lager, but that's about it for Indian beers. read more
