Chicken Thali and Momos were winnazs! Thanks to the great Yelp reviews that led us to this place! Located on the fringe of the old town section of Hilo, right next to the farmer's market area! A nice restaurant with great food and service! The chicken thali plate and an order of momos were enough to fill up my wife and I, and everything tasted great! Ok, so we're always game for different and we've experienced eating Indian cuisine. As you walk towards the Resturant outside, the aromatics of cooking spices draws you in... We ordered lamb kabobs, lamb valou and a paneer dish and can't forget the garlic naan! All the flavors and taste were absolutely on point! The service was fantastic and I'd say portion is great too! The ambiance and atmosphere is really casual and very impressed to see island people as well eating here. It's definitely a recommend if you're in the Hilo area! read more

Food is good, but the bathrooms are absolutely filthy and in disrepair. Vanity falling apart, toilets had no lids on tanks, no paper towels. And there was a note saying do not flush toilet paper down toilet, but put it in trash can. No trash cans in the stalls, so I guess carry your used toilet paper out to the sink area?? GROSS! Just arrived in Hilo starving. Pulled up yelp and one of the first restaurants I see is Indian! Yes!! I'm a basic b so I had some chicken tikka masala and veg somosas. I've had better chicken tikka masala but it was still very good. I thought the addition of veg was surprising. And the sauce, while perfectly spicy, had a bit of sweetness I didn't really enjoy. We ordered the garlic naan bread, cheese naan bread, mixed grill platter (chicken, lamb, and shrimp), shrimp biryani, and the lamb tikka masala. My personal favorites (and what I would order again) were the naan breads, shrimp biryani (especially with that yummy yogurt sauce), and the lamb tikka masala. I usually don't like lamb because it's gamey, but this lamb was so tender and not really gamey at all. And the tikka masala sauce was flavored really well! I ordered the lamb korma, medium spice, which also came with the side of basmati rice. It came in a nice little bowl and hit nice chunks of lamb in a creamy sauce. I ordered it medium hot and for me it was perfect. The lamb was tender and had no bones. I thought the combination of spices and heat were very good. My favorite non-Hawaiian meal in Hilo!!! The flavors are intense and spicy if you order your thali medium hot. The side dish of spicy pickled veg is so salty and spicy and bitter-I LOVE it. I usually order the Vegetarian Thali when I eat at the restaurant because you can not order it to go. The new waitress has a kind vibe. Check that they are open before you go because I think they are closed from 3-5(?) but not sure. I'm going off island next week so I had to get these decadent flavors on my pallet. Delicious! We came here solely on the recommendation of Tom Sharky (who runs a cacao/coffee/vanilla farm in town - check him out! He also grows curry leaves!) We ordered the garlic-cheese naan from a recommendation from a bartender at Ola Brew across the street. We ordered Veggie Samosas, chicken curry, and chicken tikka masala because we are creatures of habit. All in all - very good food! I did feel my chicken - while cooked perfectly - didn't quite absorb the flavor of the tikka masala, but the naan absorbed all the flavor of it. It's good Indian in Hilo. During Covid they stopped serving the reasonably priced, wonderful lunch specials where you got main and several sides. Unfortunately they haven't brought it back so it stopped being my go-to lunch stop. But it was still my 'special' place. My birthday was this week and there was no question about what I wanted. We got the vegetable samosas, chicken tikka masala (medium heat), vegetable biryani (medium heat) & naan. Nothing tasted like it used to and not in a good way. The samosa dough was different, it really soaked up the oil. Which wouldn't be a big thing if the filling was still as good. Unfortunately the filling had changed too, it had virtually no flavor. It was basically some bland mashed potato in an oily dough. The mint cilantro chutney for dipping was either WAY old or, most likely, from a jar. It was oxidized brown and didn't taste like mint or cilantro. I know chicken tikka isn't necessarily heavy on the spices but any hint of them were covered by heat. Same with the biryani, good amount of heat and sadly lacking spice. We didn't have to pick out a single cardamom pod, clove or bit of cinnamon stick. Honestly, everything lacked of flavor. The thing I love most about Indian food is the spices and they weren't found in anything. Hate to say it but after this meal Kamana Kitchen is no longer my go-to for a 'special' meal. read more

So lucky to have found the place! Usually if a city has only one Indian restaurant, I usually run but luckily our Airbnb owner mentioned that it was a Nepali restaurant so I had to check it out. Although the restaurant seems to be owned by some nepali folks, the food served is primarily Indian. Yes this means there are no momos! (But maybe by popular demand it could come!!) We ordered the butter chicken curry, with some rice and naan to the side along with some Pakodas. Everything was spiced so perfectly! The chicken curry was creamy and jus te right amount of spice. The pakodas were crispy and not too doughy like some other places. Apparently kamana's kitchen is a small chain, so if you don't get a chance to go on the Hilo side, make sure to check it out in Kona or the other islands! read more

Kamana Kitchen was one of my favorite restaurants that I ate at while in Hilo. We came on a Sunday at around 5PM, and it was empty inside. I had the Mango Lassi and Vegetarian Thali. I'm not super familiar with Indian food, but everything that was included with the Vegetarian Thali was delicious! The worker was super knowledgeable about the food. The platter came with: Veg Samosa: fried triangle pastry with savory potato filling Pakora: fried vegetable fritters Naan: bread Aloo Matar: potatoes and peas in spicy tomato sauce Palak Paneer: made from spinach Dal Fry: made with lentils and spices Papad: seasoned flatbread Achar: pickles Salad and Rice Pudding My favorites were the palak paneer, naan, and pakora.
