I'm not sure how or why a canoe club ended up here but it is what it is! THE PARK: Hoaloha Park is about two acres in size, with a sandy beach and very protected waters as it sits in a bay shielded by Kahului Harbor and a manmade peninsula. Grassy areas are expansive and stretch from the Maui Seaside Hotel border on the west end to the former Chart House and Hideaway Restaurant (still vacant building) to the east. While there are facilities such as restrooms, it's not available to the public as they're inside of the canoe club's buildings. Being literally next to Kahului Harbor, I wouldn't suggest swimming here as the amount of ship traffic simply pollutes the waters. Come canoe season, they sometimes hold regatta races here and the area gets infested with people and cars. There are however, some positives to this beach especially on the west end near the hotels where you can perch with a great view of the cruise ships coming in and out of port on certain days. And, because the beach isn't "beach-worthy" especially in the eyes of tourists, it's always empty! There aren't any sunset or neighbor island views, but that's the trade-off. I've been known to crack open a few and participate in the ship-watching activity myself, lol. It's a quiet place too as the highways are set back a nice distance. While there are nicer beaches on Maui, how often can you have one all to yourself? OVERALL: You're not missing out on much. Find another park. LOL.

When we have a few extra minutes in Kahului, we like to stop off at Kanaha Pond to enjoy the birds…read more There were mostly ducks and stilts today but we have seen Nenes, or Hawaiian Geese (the state bird). One time, there was a family with several little goslings. We stopped on the path to the shelter and let them decide if they wanted to pass us in the other direction. The male gave me a stink eye as they walked by and started hissing at me after they got a little ways past. It was funny that he became more macho after getting a little distance. Anyway, I always enjoy the Ae'o, or Hawaiian Stilt. They wade through the shallow water with such long legs, in search of food. Their chirps warn others of our presence. There are benches in the small shelter, where you can sit in the shade and watch the birds do their bird things. There also is a gate on the back side of the pond, near the water treatment plant, that lets you in to the dirt roads that were used to access a series of WW2 storage bunkers. There are other ponds back there, too. It's a nice area to walk through.

It's a small park with limited amenities like picnic tables and "exercise stations," but boasts beautiful ocean views and brisk mountain breezes. I used to live in the neighborhood and used to bring my pups here a lot. Years later, I am happy that they finally put in a new playground for the little ones to enjoy (I recommend for older kids, 4 and up). They've also installed new equipment for visitors to do their exercises. Scan the QR code on the equipment for a video demo of exercises you can do at each station. These exercise areas, including the playground, is surrounded by astroturf which is nice and makes it more manageable. The park is now also ADA accessible as they've built a path down to the playground and through the lower part of the park. I like to bring my little one here because it's quiet, less frequented by people, and honestly the views are just amazing. We've enjoyed a picnic or two here and I can just sit for hours on end enjoying the ocean view

Early plans back in 2014 called for soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts but none of them have been built. Some might confuse this place with the nearby Central Maui Regional Sports Complex which is already in use as a multi-baseball field facility. The park is about 26 acres with restroom facilities and a small parking lot which is locked at night. It's a wide open swath of land graded into several levels. There are no benches, not even a tree to perch under. So what is this place good for? I say to let your two-legged, sugar-filled kids burn off their energy, or for your four-legged fur babies to run amok. But, please pick up their crap! OVERALL: If and when they develop the fields for sporting events, parking will be a big problem. I can picture vehicles illegally parking on the shoulders and center grassy median. Maybe it should be left as is.

We have taken three of their "Morning Walks" with our grandkids and it's a perfect introduction to hiking. Honestly we've had three different ...wonderful.. experiences. It's not strenuous and you're taken back to some private land that you'd not have access to if you just drove up and parked (if you found a parking spot) and hiked back in. We were lucky to have the lovely, fun, and knowledgeable guide named Randolyn ..aka Ran. She was the perfect blend of kind, patient and engaging with the grandkids, and very helpful with us old folks! On the drive on the way home she advised a few newbies to the island where some great places to eat were... they greatly appreciated her ideas! This morning Keopuolani Park had a fun run for Pono Viela so there were a lot of people when we arrived so we rerouted. The streetlight at Kaahumanu and Papa was out so we rerouted again. Finally we ended up here at KCC and the little playground was pilau. It was full of graffiti and it's clearly old but at least it's gated in. We didn't stay here as long as we usually stay at Keopuolani but it did the trick. We could use more nice playgrounds here in Central Maui or upgrade ones like these. I think next time Keopuolani is packed, we will just go to Wailuku Heights park even though it's pretty windy sometimes up there or the one by Wailuku Elementary even though there's usually ball games going at that one.

SO many good memories here at KCC over the years. Even better were rainy days where body boards took the place of cardboard boxes and if we walked away unscathed with little to no bruises, we considered ourselves one of the lucky ones. I remember a number of field trips to the swimming pool, hanging on to the walls for dear life, but still having so much fun. Aah, those were the days. The park has changed very little since then & that's all part of it's charm. With it's soccer fields, swimming pool, community center, tennis courts, walking trails, etc. Kahului Community Center Park has always been a gathering place for families, friends, & generations of local Mauians. Although the facilities are quite a bit older, everything has been well maintained for the most part. The community center remains popular for all types of parties and events. Frequent games are hosted on the soccer fields. Tennis courts are well lit once the sun bids us adieu. And the playgrounds are enclosed for our littles to enjoy. The park is centrally located so I still come here to take my son out to play every now and then. The playground is geared more towards older children, but there's still enough for my 3 1/2 year old to enjoy. He might also just like being outside in general so there's that... hehe. All in all, great park!

Dedicated to native Hawaiian costal and dry forest plants, the Maui Nui Botantical Gardens is…read morewithin (long) walking distance (under 2 miles) from the Kahului Cruise Port. It's collection started in the 1970s and once was a site for a zoo (which closed in 1997). Our party of four spent an early afternoon here, taking an Uber (got unlucky and hit surge pricing of $35) from a takeout lunch spot. The caretaker (who took our admission price of $10 per non-resident) was super nice, explaining how there is an app that one can download and can then use without internet to hear audio commentary on many of the plants in the collection. There is a modern bathroom building in the same area, along with a place to refill your water bottles. One can probably walk through the entire garden in about an hour if going fast, 2 hours if taking one's time and reading/listening. There are plenty of shaded places to sit, and because it wasn't too crowded, we never felt hurried. My favorite places were where they had the agricultural plants like taro, sweet potato, banana, and sugar cane (many varieties). They also had a small grove of coconut trees, cordoned off to prevent unfortunate accidents from falling ripe coconuts. They did have some flowering plants, including a hibiscus. But you wouldn't come here for that; instead its to learn about the plants native to Hawaii and pick up a bit of history along the way.
