One time, there was a family with several little goslings. We stopped on the path to the shelter and let them decide if they wanted to pass us in the other direction. The male gave me a stink eye as they walked by and started hissing at me after they got a little ways past. It was funny that he became more macho after getting a little distance. Anyway, I always enjoy the Ae'o, or Hawaiian Stilt. They wade through the shallow water with such long legs, in search of food. Their chirps warn others of our presence. There are benches in the small shelter, where you can sit in the shade and watch the birds do their bird things. There also is a gate on the back side of the pond, near the water treatment plant, that lets you in to the dirt roads that were used to access a series of WW2 storage bunkers. There are other ponds back there, too. It's a nice area to walk through.

It's a small park with limited amenities like picnic tables and "exercise stations," but boasts beautiful ocean views and brisk mountain breezes. I used to live in the neighborhood and used to bring my pups here a lot. Years later, I am happy that they finally put in a new playground for the little ones to enjoy (I recommend for older kids, 4 and up). They've also installed new equipment for visitors to do their exercises. Scan the QR code on the equipment for a video demo of exercises you can do at each station. These exercise areas, including the playground, is surrounded by astroturf which is nice and makes it more manageable. The park is now also ADA accessible as they've built a path down to the playground and through the lower part of the park. I like to bring my little one here because it's quiet, less frequented by people, and honestly the views are just amazing. We've enjoyed a picnic or two here and I can just sit for hours on end enjoying the ocean view

Early plans back in 2014 called for soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts but none of them have been built. Some might confuse this place with the nearby Central Maui Regional Sports Complex which is already in use as a multi-baseball field facility. The park is about 26 acres with restroom facilities and a small parking lot which is locked at night. It's a wide open swath of land graded into several levels. There are no benches, not even a tree to perch under. So what is this place good for? I say to let your two-legged, sugar-filled kids burn off their energy, or for your four-legged fur babies to run amok. But, please pick up their crap! OVERALL: If and when they develop the fields for sporting events, parking will be a big problem. I can picture vehicles illegally parking on the shoulders and center grassy median. Brian was just soo fun, and soo informative. He balanced all our interests absolutely wonderfully, it was just amazing. The kid was thrilled with the his dino costume (Oh my god! the costume, he wore it on the Entire trip except when jumping off the rocks ofcourse), the adult in the other group with all the geological tectonics knowledge that flowed like an uninterrupted volcano from his mouth...non stop, and me with all the native plant life info. The Hala tree amazed me and so did the big red flower- torch ginger, which actually looks like a vibrant staff fit for a king. I would never have learnt about them in detail if not for this trip. All this besides the actual trip to the waterfalls, the encouragement he gave to the other group was astounding (I don't swim myself unfortunately, or the fun would have tripled for me). He supported, guided, advised, and made them have the time of their life with the diving and the swimming. Three cheers to the B.Rex. Hike Maui site itself had useful info for the walk and I brought the water shoes after reading about it on their site, it really worked great out there. Pick up was right on time and the directions were pretty clear, but u could have mentioned near Kahului Park and Ride, I mistook the 8 min drive for 8 min walk, and walked up from my hotel ! Hike Maui arranged for backpacks and that was very useful too. To just it throw it on our shoulders and walk freely. The little snacks were good after the walk. The best part was the passion fruit which was handed out as a parting gift. It was my first time to eat that fruit too. Note: The waterfalls are accessible privately with rental car too. You could explore the area in your own sweet time. But I did notice there were not many signs with specific directions inside the forest. And no labels on the plants. Most places no mobile signals either. That said, you could do it on your own. I cannot say enough about this trip. It is for all ages and a great little Maui to explore comfortably. The caretaker (who took our admission price of $10 per non-resident) was super nice, explaining how there is an app that one can download and can then use without internet to hear audio commentary on many of the plants in the collection. There is a modern bathroom building in the same area, along with a place to refill your water bottles. One can probably walk through the entire garden in about an hour if going fast, 2 hours if taking one's time and reading/listening. There are plenty of shaded places to sit, and because it wasn't too crowded, we never felt hurried. My favorite places were where they had the agricultural plants like taro, sweet potato, banana, and sugar cane (many varieties). They also had a small grove of coconut trees, cordoned off to prevent unfortunate accidents from falling ripe coconuts. They did have some flowering plants, including a hibiscus. But you wouldn't come here for that; instead its to learn about the plants native to Hawaii and pick up a bit of history along the way.
