After a day of driving in upcountry we stopped at the small park. So peaceful. We were the only ones there..

What a nice impromptu visit here at Sun Yat Sen Park, after leaving Kula, thank you to my other for making a stop here. I didn't know this small roadside park existed. If you drive too fast after Kula you will miss the left turn, which happened to us, so my other half had to turn around again which was a little hard to do, due to not having enough space and the slightly curvy road. Sun Yat Sen Park is in Keokea between mile markers 18 and 19. It is worth the stop just to check out Sun Yat Sen Park. It is great to have a memorial park in honor of Sun Yat Sen. Ulupalakua Ranch donated the land for the park in 1989. I remember during small kid time, my dad made me and my siblings go to Chinese School, I remember learning about Sun Yat Sen and we have the very same statue of Sun Yat Sen at Oahu's Chinatown but I like it I here better. Who was Sun Yat Sen? Dr. Sun Yat Sen was a revolutionary in China and a political leader who was often referred to as the father of modern China. Dr. Sun Yat Sen served as the first provisional president when the Republic of China was founded in 1912, after the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty a year before. During my short visit, I enjoyed seeing the spectacular scenic views, bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, few other statues, different plants, trees and I was lucky to see a few cherry blossom in bloom. I walked around and explored for a bit, took a few pics before we left. There are picnic table and bench, perfect for bringing your take out lunch here to enjoy. I read that is is a great place to catch the sunsets, If lucky enough, to be at this location late in the day, you could get a color show unlike anything you have seen. Overall, this is such a great memorial park, so worth it for quick stop with great photo opts. I am so happy, that the other half turned back, here just for me! Next time I visit Maui again, I want to come back for the sunsets!

Driving from MauiWine we stopped here at this small history park to check it out. It was quiet, the Hawaiian Roosters were lonely and maybe hungry - I didnt have bread or crackers with me. Walked around and took photos. Very peaceful and beautiful views. I really enjoyed reading about the statue of the man. Great legacy in Maui.

A small park that you can walk on the paved walkway on top for a little bit. Then you have to walk down the grassy area on a slight hill. There's a bench table that you can sit on and watch the sunset around 7:08pm. There were s lot of clouds tonight so the sunset wasn't that great. Another night, perhaps. The park has a dozen statues scattered around and a lot of different trees. The name should be Sun-Yet (not Sun Yat), etc.

Driving upcountry and recalling so many other past times in Kula, we stopped to catch the sunset. There was only one other local there. Very enjoyable to listen to some music, catch the sunset and my guy captured some beautiful drone footage of the sunset too! We didn't ask through the park this time but have in the past and will do so again. We are sure to return

Driving along in Upcountry we made a short stop at this tiny county park in Kula - Sun Yat Sen Park. It's got 2 lions in front of the entrance with Chinese characters on the side. One post had Hawaiian words & English: May Peace Prevail On Earth. There's also a plaque on the sister city relationship between Maui County & Pingtung County, Taiwan, China commemorated 2/2/09. There's a giant statue of Sun Yat Sen, who was the First President & Founding father of the Republic of China, with Chinese characters & some English words. More things to read about SYS too. Worth a short break for pictures.

The playground was a dream: tons of activities to choose from and only 1-2 other families. My review is mainly about the playground but the park was gorgeous, tons of space to run and play, covered picnic areas, and tons of parking. (There is a porta potty which was really the only dim spot for me.) The Kalakupua Playground is really well-taken care of by the neighborhood. Hardly any grafitti, only one tiny area is broken (but it's taped off), and it's very safe - as the entire ground is covered in cut up pieces of tires. There are swing sets on both sides of the playground - and safe toddler swing sets, too. Climbing choices galore, many slides to choose from, a great parkour for kids area, and even a tiered sitting area for parents to wait while their children roam free in the safe, fence-surrounded playground. Truly, truly a gem if you are looking for a playground for your kids. I can't believe we stumbled on it. But we all left so happy: as parents it was nice to let them roam free, my 1-year old daughter knocked out for her nap, and our 6-year old yelled as we were leaving, "Mom, that's a 5-star playground!" I totally agree.

I come here because it's close to my mom's house. So I take a stroll every now and then here…read more Big grassy area. They have pavilions for parties here. They have a nice jungle gym for the keiki for all ages. It's nice for them to play on. They have swings and bucket swings for the younger ones. Just a nicer park overall.
