The adventurous part of the trail is currently closed due to Covid. Very easy, shady, flat area for a stroll. Not very busy at all (went in Feb on a Friday). We got there pretty early in the morning, 2 people were leaving when we arrived and no one else was on the trail, until we were heading back. Nice wide path, no real inclines (for the part that was open). The section of the trail that's closed has switchbacks - any hiker knows that means incline- that leads to a small rocky area. I believe you can continue another way but we stopped at the "springs" area. Our dog loved the entire path. We loved that is was so quiet and shady!

Wide trails are at the beginning of this forest trail that's secluded and lower in temp than Kihei. Took about an hour to slowly do the loop and part of the trail to the spring. Forest was relaxing and peaceful.

I call this more walking than hiking but it's really a nice place to take a walk it's about a two and a half mile stroll it's an excellent place to do barefoot walking there's lots of pine needles that you cushion your bare feet there are dogs so you do need to be careful while barefoot walking lots of good trees unique area for Maui I would check it out again and again and again

Eerily quiet is how I would describe this trail. We hiked for about an hour and a half on a mostly flat trail and there was the sound of birds every now and then. We passed by a few people on the trail but not many. The day that we went was cloudy and drizzled at times. It's a pine forest in the middle of the island. There were a few places where branches were made into a make shift tent. One of the sites said that there is a waterfall but we didn't walk that far. There is a portapotty along the trail (just fyi) in case you need to go. Make sure to put all valuables away in your car. There signs warning of car break-ins.

DO NOT DO THE LOOP TRAIL...BORING! Just make a B-line to the Waihou Springs/Caves! Lots of fallen trees! This forest is dead! We did the entire loop trail and not a single sound!! No birds, no leaves falling, no noise...dead silence. Occasionally a slight sound of wind. No mosquitos either! This forest is spooky! We did notice birds and other noises going down to the caves. The caves are quite interesting!

Super easy and family friendly hike. I would recommend coming early because parking is limited.

Really nice trail located upcountry in Olinda. Parking was good for us but I could see it being a problem on busier days as the spots are limited. The drive up is stunning. So many trees and awesome vegetation. As soon as we got through the gates, it felt like we were in another world. So quiet, so pretty and so cold! Don't forget: it's upcountry and it gets chilly. It was only 52* for us which isn't anything to whine about, except when you're a big baby like me. I had to put on pants and a long sleeved shirt. The walk down was pretty and really easy. Any age and ability can hike this hike. It goes in a loop and heads back--or--you can head to the right and go down to the springs. (Which I recommend doing.) The trail down is pretty easy--but caution should be used-it can be slick in spots. I'd recommend keeping an eye on the weather as it could be very unsafe due to the dirt turning to mud if it starts to rain. Once down the zig-zag-y trail, it's a beautiful place filled with green nature. Enjoy the quiet and just soak in this lovely place. Dogs are welcome with a leash.

We love this trail! We live in Kihei and love to get Upcountry for a bit cooler weather, and this trail is gorgeous. Peace and quiet, cooler temps, pine trees, fall colors... It seems like a different world! The loop trail is very easy- great for families and/or pets. If you're looking to make this trail a little more interesting, take the detour down to the spring. It is relatively steep switchbacks down and back up, so be sure you're ready for that! If you have the endurance I would highly recommend it, it's quiet interesting down there!

Quick and peaceful hike. Was a bit slippery going down to the caves in December but definitely worth it. Beginning is experimental coniferous forest. Limited parking at trailhead but wasn't busy.

We drove an hour to get here and it was closed for some reason that wasn't super clear. Bummed as it looked beautiful and cooler weather!

As soon as we began our trek, we were met with lush vegetation, beautiful plants and flowers native to the island, and the sound of birds chirping in the air. The Falls were raging when we arrived and we couldn't help ourselves- we jumped right into the water! Such an awesome experience for my kids! Afterwards, we stopped at a concession stand for some delicious treats and fresh coconut water!

When we arrived at the trailhead, I was a little wary to hike given all the broken car window glass on the ground in the roadside parking, so we were sure to move everything out of sight and in the trunk. I really enjoyed the hike and the challenge of figuring out the best way to cross the stream. I often looked for the wet footprints from others to see where the trail would go. I tried to count the 13 crossings but quickly figured out it's hard to remember to count. The trail wasn't crowded at all, and when we got to the waterfall, we had it to ourselves. It started to rain on the way out, which made it hard to follow the footprints, and everything was much more slippery. If you're staying on the dry Lahaina side, it's nice to take a hike through the lush forest. And thankfully, no break in for us. Pro tip: Don't even bother trying to keep your shoes dry because you'll end up getting them wet swimming or wading at the falls.

The hike itself was amazing - easily my favorite thing I did on my Maui trip. We hit three hikes throughout the day and I can't say enough about Steven's guidance. He was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so so much about the landscape, nature, history, cultural tidbits, and other stories of the area/what we were seeing. I was super grateful for that because it felt like a thoughtful experience, rather than a generic overdone tour. He was also very good about managing everyone's different hiking skill levels/paces so that folks were comfortable and could go at whatever pace they wanted. It wasn't strict or boring at all. Oh also Steven was so kind in taking pics for people/stopping when there was a good shot. If you're wondering about whether to do this one, definitely go for it! I had an incredible time and while the landscape was absolutely surreal, it wouldn't have been the same experience without this tour. Thanks so much, Steven!!

Not only did we get to ride in comfort with all our stuff, but we also customized every stop. We could easily say "yes" or "no" to any stop on the Road to Hana. Our tour guide Chris was excellent, informative, and fun to hang out with for the entire day. Chris had great recommendations for us and the food stops were amazing and delicious and tailored to what we were feeling or not feeling. We had a general idea of the stops we wanted to hit based on our research, but Chris went above and beyond to show us unique stops and views and scenic views. We made great memories and got to experience the road to Hana in a way that far exceeded our expectations. All though it was not the most affordable way to experience the road to Hana, we still felt it was worth the cost. It will be a great memory for us for years to come. I can now say I swam in a waterfall....a very cold one, but definitely worth it. Chris knows these roads and all the stops you might want to see, and he customized it to our level of adventure, including hikes and swims along the way. You can definitely find cheaper alternatives, but I would suggest speaking with Awapuhi Adventures to see if they can meet your needs. The pros of going private is that you are in the drivers seat (figuratively) for where and when to stop, and can skip anything that seems generic or not to your liking. The con is that it will cost some $$$. In our experience, it was worth it! Thanks again, Chris!
