Wow! I can't get over how nice everyone was in this restaurant. From the time of walking in until I was waking out of the door, everyone was so pleasant. That's what sticks out in my mind. The waiter even made suggestions and 'coached' me through how to eat my meal. And the meal was delicious. I had the ribeye and marinated pork. Very, very good. Multiple people would come by the table to make sure that the food was cooking efficiently. That was a plus. Also, most of the people there were in the private areas so there was any excess noise or lack of space out on the floor. I went to this restaurant a few months back with my homegirl and treated her for her birthday. This was her first time here, but it wasn't my first time dining here, and it was neither of our first times having Korean barbecue. We shared the Korean BBQ combo A, fried chicken gizzards, 2 sodas, extra rice, and extra eggs. It was a Thursday night; we got to the restaurant around 8:15, and they close at 9:00. There were maybe 3 or 4 tables inside at the time, including us. We ordered our food at 8:20, and we got it at 8:30. While we were getting prepared to cook our food, or as we started cooking, our server noticed that we were doing it wrong and decided to take over and cook all the meat for us. My homegirl and I looked at each other like, "What is she doing?" I thought we were supposed to cook this. I don't know if she did this because it was almost closing time or if she saw two black guests and felt like we didn't know what we were doing - that we were too incompetent. Long story short, we're the last two people in the restaurant, it was time to get the bill. The check was $154. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I don't leave card tips; I always bring cash with me. When my server brought me back my receipt, I crossed out the tip portion because I had cash on me to give her. She got so upset and started questioning me about a tip, to the point where she got the manager involved. I was just so baffled because, baby, I had $46 in my bag that I was about to give to you. The manager's involvement took it to another level. He told me about tip adequacy and mentioned that they get a lot of African Americans who come into the restaurant, and despite great hospitality, they don't leave a tip. This comment struck a chord with me. Not only did it come across as racist and prejudiced, but it also showed that the manager judges people based on appearances. Assuming I wouldn't leave a tip based on the color of my skin, simply because other customers of the same skin color had done so in the past, is kind of FUCKED up. Ever since that day, I've never gone back to this POS restaurant. And to top that off, having servers come up and question customers about tips says a lot about how they're not paid enough. It's clear that the restaurant's compensation structure for servers relies heavily on tips, which can lead to situations like this. As an owner or manager, or whatever your title was, to think that every customer who walks through your doors is going to leave a tip is unrealistic. Does that mean your performance and how you treat customers will change if they don't leave a tip? This was my homegirl's and my first time ever experiencing something like this. I still talk to her about it to this day. Low-key, I recommend Fish & BBQ Korean restaurant next door or Volcano Hot Pot & Korean BBQ. To my brothers and sisters, please don't come here! read more

Tracking down my new fav Korean soup Yakgaejong, yelped this place for a Saturday late lunch. Located in a strip with about 5 businesses (4 Asian as well) it was easy to find and had ample parking. Fairly busy, they have KBBQ tables in the center of the small restaurant, seating 4 and along side they have "semi private seating" (think booths, separated by a divider, and a curtain to block view) I was immediately seated in a private area. Lots of busy-ness I waved to grab the attention of the wait staff (I knew what I was there for and didn't need an inordinate amount of time to look at the menu) It's both a KBBQ (cook your own) and Hot Pot Option. But that's not what I wanted, so was happy they also offered a variety of menu items, to include my fav soup 5sides came out first, kimchi, a "kimchi-like flavored" noodle, some sort of apple mayo salad (I was not if fan, tasted borderline going bad), fish cake (she said it's pillow: cut into triangular pieces) and another mung (bean sprout) salad that was unique and tasty By the time I ate the 3.5 (only half the fish...became too fishy hahah), I knew I would be taking most of my soup home Soup came out in a timely fashion and was PIPING HOT!! I asked for extra Spicey and they did not disappoint! Flavorful and hot and spicey and all the vegetables I could want, along with a bowl of white sticky rice I was only able to eat about 1/4 of it (with spoonfuls of rice, then had to pack it up in a doggy-container! Where do I begin? I was meeting an old friend (brother from another mother) tonight after having not seen him in too long. He was rolling in "hot n' hungry" from a long drive on the road coming from Nashville, and was sorely in need of some R&R and good food. What's the perfect place for such a gathering you may ask? The answer, of course, is Kalim. My friend had never eaten here before, so I really wanted to surprise him with how comfortable, friendly and laid back this place was in addition to the always amazing food. Tonight, Kalim did not disappoint. To make things even better, our server, Hee, brought the experience up to another level. She offered recommendations on menu items and even helped prepare the cuts of meats and showed us the proper way to mix the noodles, meats and sauces to maximize the flavor profiles following traditional Korean practice. customer service was very poor. my friends and i came as a party of 4 this past saturday. we liked the private dining experience, however, the room was full of flies everywhere. the server initially tried upcharging us with the entrees and ever since we denied the service was extremely poor. we had to request water multiple times before we actually received it. then after recieving the water we had to hunt them down to get a straw. when it came to the actual bbq, the food was very meh. it didn't wow me and the service as we needed help while cooking the meat was extremely poor. they came in and didn't say a word to us but threw all of our meat on the burner to cook taking away the fun from actually cooking your own meat during kbbq. as we go to pay we notice the wrong check was given almost twice the size of our actually check. when we receive our actual check there is an automatic gratuity added, mind you, the automatic gratuity is listed on the menu for parties of 5 or more which my party was not and when we questioned them about it they said it was because we "weren't going to tip anyway" not sure if it's because we were black which i noticed another review commented on their experience being poor because they were black. overall rude servers, poor quality of service, and definitely poor quality of food. please go somewhere else if you want quality korean bbq and better staff. read more

So glad to get a recommendation to come to Kalim on a Friday night a few weeks ago. We made a reservation in advance and got a room to accommodate a group of about 10 people. In our large party we tried a Combo D for 5 people, and a few other people tried out individual meals or other grill combos. For the Combo D, we swapped out the large beef intestine for more thinly sliced brisket at our server's suggestion. She also helped us out with putting some of the brisket on the grill pad when she saw were going too slowly. There was so much food, definitely enough for 5 people, maybe even 6. All the meat was very flavorful, and a good combination of different cuts with different textures. Combo D came with a salad, steamed egg, doenjang jjigae, and rice. The salad and steamed egg were the highlights of the whole meal. The salad was a combo of green onions, romaine lettuce, gochugaru, and i don't know what else, but it was the perfect complement to go with the meat. That steamed egg was so flavorful but so light. I wish I'd had more room to eat more of it. This experience was so good I don't know if I want to try another Korean spot in the area. I'll definitely be back if I have the opportunity. read more

I go to the University of Alabama and a friend of mine from Montgomery had said Montgomery had good Korean food so I knew I eventually had to try a restaurant out! And with my experience here, this place is pretty good! I like this place because of their quick and nice service! We were seated right away and the food came out super fast. My sister was almost shocked by how fast the food came out. Most of the food also tasted pretty good! The dolsot bibimbap was good along with the pork bulgogi and galbi. There were also some things I thought they could improve on. For one, I think the hot stone plates that the pork bulgogi and galbi could be a lot hotter. Often at many Korean restaurants, the meats usually sizzle because of how hot the plate is but it didn't here. I also think they can somehow improve upon their tteokbokki. read more

Food: - Ox-tail Soup ($11): 3/5 I came here because I was craving gamjatang. It was unavailable so I ordered the ox-tail soup instead. Most places that I've gone to have clear noodles in the soup but this place didn't have it. There was no ox-tail either. The meat that was in there was some kind of brisket, which was actually the best part. The meat was very tender and flavorful but the soup overall was not great. Another thing to note: most of the banchan (side dishes) were not good. The kimchi and radish kimchi were well below average. Good radish kimchi should have a nice crunch to it; Kalim's radish kimchi was more chewy than crunchy. Price: - $11 before tip. After tip and tax, I didn't feel like the ox-tail soup was worth the price. Service: + I was seated promptly and service was quick and friendly. The waitress checked on me several times to refill my water and banchan. Ambiance: + Good lunch/dinner spot for friends or family. There are private rooms with curtains as well. Overall: - I was disappointed the gamjatang wasn't available but didn't let my disappointment cloud my tastebuds. The ox-tail soup at Kalim was not bad, not great. The banchan was not good. I can't confirm, but from other reviews and some friends, it sounds like the actual Korean bbq is much better. If I was from the area, I'd give Kalim's kbbq a try. Eh, this restaurant is pretty OK. I went 30 minutes before their lunch break started and was told that it was alright to order meat combos. We ended up ordering combo S from the menu. The side dishes weren't spectacular, but I had no complaints since they were complimentary. The meat quality wasn't bad for the price as well. The only downside is that no one came back to refill our side dishes nor our waters. When it came time to pay, we had to go up to the front desk. We decided to go here driving through Montgomery as it was close to the art museum we had left and we both like Korean food. We were very happy we decided to stop in! Our hostess/server was a really friendly woman and gave us great service. The food was wonderfully cooked (we wanted to try the BBQ, but we were only eating for two and that's more of a full table thing) so we got some of their marinated pork belly and kimchi stew. Delicious! I travel for work and am in Montgomery on multiple occasions and I've tried a few of the Korean restaurants in the area and this one is my go-to. Those that have never tried korean food, this is a place for newbies, the wait staff is very friendly. The first time I went I had the Kimchi Jigae soup for lunch. It was made with perfectly riped kimchi so it had the right amount of spicy and sour flavor. I loved the food so much I decided to get the Yook Gae Jang to go for dinner. Their radish kimchi is one of the best I've had and I asked the waitress if I could have that as my side for my order and she gave me an entire pint! This soup heats up very well so it was perfect a few hours later. The second time I went, I had the BBQ Combo A, the waitress allowed us to mix and match the meats rather than sticking with the predetermined meat selection. We had pork belly, short ribs, and beef bulgogi. The food was delicious, this place really does a good job with the "banchan" (side dishes) that accompany the meal. I think you can tell if a korean restaurant is good if the banchan selection they have is just as good, if not, better than the entrees. Having spent two years in Korea, I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome selection of Korean food in Montgomery AL. We've tried most of the places around town over the last two years, and Kalim is our favorite. I think it's the only place you can currently cook your own meat (of the strictly-korean restaurants), and there is no longer any buffet options in town. It's hard to find a good Korean restaurant here, because this is Montgomery and we are not in Koreatown anymore... Luckily, on our way to the Shakespeare theater we spotted a plaza with all Korean writing and decided to stop by. The place is painted light green and very cute inside. Each table is surrounded by walls and even a curtain over the doors, for privacy I guess. I got the LA Kalbi and my got the bibimbap. The food was delicious. The kalbi even came with a small bean paste soup. Good ban chan, good service, solid Korean food. And open on a Sunday. Truly a treasure in Montgomery. read more
