Wow! I can't get over how nice everyone was in this restaurant. From the time of walking in until I…read morewas waking out of the door, everyone was so pleasant. That's what sticks out in my mind. The waiter even made suggestions and 'coached' me through how to eat my meal. And the meal was delicious. I had the ribeye and marinated pork. Very, very good. Multiple people would come by the table to make sure that the food was cooking efficiently. That was a plus. Also, most of the people there were in the private areas so there was any excess noise or lack of space out on the floor. I even watched time and time again how affectionately they would greet their guests. It was apparent that most of their patrons were regulars. Well, count me in that bunch as well. I'll be going here often. You should, too.

I went to this restaurant a few months back with my homegirl and treated her for her birthday. This…read morewas her first time here, but it wasn't my first time dining here, and it was neither of our first times having Korean barbecue. We shared the Korean BBQ combo A, fried chicken gizzards, 2 sodas, extra rice, and extra eggs. It was a Thursday night; we got to the restaurant around 8:15, and they close at 9:00. There were maybe 3 or 4 tables inside at the time, including us. We ordered our food at 8:20, and we got it at 8:30. While we were getting prepared to cook our food, or as we started cooking, our server noticed that we were doing it wrong and decided to take over and cook all the meat for us. My homegirl and I looked at each other like, "What is she doing?" I thought we were supposed to cook this. I don't know if she did this because it was almost closing time or if she saw two black guests and felt like we didn't know what we were doing - that we were too incompetent. Long story short, we're the last two people in the restaurant, it was time to get the bill. The check was $154. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I don't leave card tips; I always bring cash with me. When my server brought me back my receipt, I crossed out the tip portion because I had cash on me to give her. She got so upset and started questioning me about a tip, to the point where she got the manager involved. I was just so baffled because, baby, I had $46 in my bag that I was about to give to you. The manager's involvement took it to another level. He told me about tip adequacy and mentioned that they get a lot of African Americans who come into the restaurant, and despite great hospitality, they don't leave a tip. This comment struck a chord with me. Not only did it come across as racist and prejudiced, but it also showed that the manager judges people based on appearances. Assuming I wouldn't leave a tip based on the color of my skin, simply because other customers of the same skin color had done so in the past, is kind of FUCKED up. Ever since that day, I've never gone back to this POS restaurant. And to top that off, having servers come up and question customers about tips says a lot about how they're not paid enough. It's clear that the restaurant's compensation structure for servers relies heavily on tips, which can lead to situations like this. As an owner or manager, or whatever your title was, to think that every customer who walks through your doors is going to leave a tip is unrealistic. Does that mean your performance and how you treat customers will change if they don't leave a tip? This was my homegirl's and my first time ever experiencing something like this. I still talk to her about it to this day. Low-key, I recommend Fish & BBQ Korean restaurant next door or Volcano Hot Pot & Korean BBQ. To my brothers and sisters, please don't come here!

The service here was a little slow, but it looked like one man was doing everything with one woman helping with bringing out food and cleaning plates. The man was very attentive and brought everything we needed and got every order perfect, there were just really long wait times between appearances. We ordered sweet and spicy rice cakes as an appetizer, dumpling soup (for the kids), kimchi soup for me, and soybean paste soup for my husband. The banchan came out first. I'm used to all cold dishes, but the fish cakes and one other one came out warm. They were all good, but the cucumbers were a hit for me and my husband, the broccoli/apple/carrot salad was my girls' favorite. We had never tried the rice cakes before, but super glad we did because I'm pretty sure they were our actual favorite item of the evening. The soups all came out still bubbling. The kimchi soup was exactly what I wanted, and exactly what you'd expect for a steaming hot juicy bowl of kimchi soup. So good! I didn't care for my husband's soy bean paste soup, but he ate it over steamed rice and ate the rice cakes on the side and loved it. Both girls liked the dumplings and rice cakes in the dumpling soup, but they liked the broth the most. They didn't care for the egg noodles very much though. The kids did get a kick out of the curtains on the booth. It was a little more expensive than I expected, but we ordered three dishes that I'm pretty sure could have been shared by 2 people each, and we all have leftover for tomorrow now.

You can order at the counter or request table service. We sat down and looked over the menu. They do a good job of accurately describing everything in there so there were few questions. We ordered fountain drinks which were attentively refilled. The fried dumplings were delicious, crispy and fresh. The chicken had the most uniquely delicate crust, and both of our selections were tasty and nicely presented. The interior is modern and comfortable and immaculate. Do not hesitate!

The fried rice was good, but I think it could have used a little more spice, but then again it's possible I needed to cleanse my palate from the wings. The service was friendly though it did take a bit for someone to come to the counter. Inside was nice and had a good amount of seating if you wanted to eat in with a group, and ample parking in the lot outside as it's within a shopping plaza. I'm not in Alabama too often, but I save this place to my maps listing as it's well worth another visit.

I came in with an open mind but left unimpressed. From the outside, SHILLA could use some work. It looks kind of old and dingy. The inside is a bit of an improvement, but it was poorly lit. There was not a very welcoming feel when we entered. Service wise, they seemed short staffed for a weekend. Everyone was cordial however the service was kind of lacking. No one checked on us after the food arrived. We wanted to order some more food and we didn't see anyone from our seats so we pushed the button which yielded no response until the 4th try. I understand there was a party in the other room, but other than that group--there was no one else in the restaurant except us... Food: Off the bat, I was disappointed because I tried to order sushi and was told it was not offered on the weekends--this is not stated anywhere on the menu. Here are some of the items we ordered: *Soontofu/Tofu Soup ($8.95) *Japchae ($12.95) *Haemulpajun/Seafood pancake ($12.95) *Bulgogi ($14.95) *LA Galbi ($18.95) Food-wise, the wait was super long and the food was MEH. The tofu soup didn't arrive sizzling hot like I'm used to and lacked in taste. The LA Galbi was relatively the best out of everything we ordered, although it had quite a bit of fat the first time around. So we ended up ordering two more orders of galbi. Second time around was much better (less fat and much hotter in temperature when it arrived). Overall, SHILLA is not bad if you're nearby. But for me, I'd check out what other Korean restaurants in Montgomery has to offer before coming back.
