Fantastic Chinese food! This spot is located in a quiet corner of an older plaza. Mr. Chen's has a great market alongside the restaurant. You can go shopping right after you eat! I was very impressed by the authenticity of the food. I tried the Combination Pan Fried Noodles and Ginger and Onion Calamari on this visit. They were fantastic! The pan fried noodles were perfectly cooked. It came with heaping portions of delicious meats and vegetables. The fried calamari was so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Went there for lunch last Wednesday. Things started out ok. We were seated promptly as the place wasn't that crowded. We ordered fairly quickly, and our drinks were brought out soon after. The soup was then served and it was very hot and tasted pretty good. And then things went south. After waiting for over an hour to get our main dishes a "VIP" group walks in and 5 minutes later is immediately served. Finally, they brought the food for the other two members of our party and walked away. Ten minutes later, I stopped someone and asked, "Can I please get MY food?" We ordered salty crispy chicken and the eggplant w/ pork in a hot pot. I cannot visit Montgomery without eating here. It is THAT good (to me). The salty crispy chicken is reminiscent of Taiwanese fried chicken street food. The eggplant is so rich and kind of oily in a rare good way that to this day, I am still trying to google the recipe to make this. It warms me up to my soul. Also, the store carries brown sugar boba milk tea ice cream. Yes, you read that right, in the middle of the exotic land that is Montgomery, Alabama, you can find these rare and elusive popsicles here, in Mr. Chen's. So this time when we visited him in Montgomery, we went to Mr. Chen's together to check it out. This place is a Chinese market and restaurant in one. Mr. Chen's is located in the right corner of a large plaza. There's plenty of parking. Walking in, you'll see the small market. To the left, there's a sign directing you to the restaurant. The restaurant area is spacious, has about 4-5 large round tables and about 10 smaller tables. Their menu offers a TON of options. From soups, pork/beef/seafood/chicken entrees, noodles, veggies to hot pot meals and chef's special menu. We ordered two things this time: *Spicy Hot Pot ($59.99/4 people): The hot pot for 4 is VERY generous. I believe hot pot for 2 ($33.99) would have been enough for the 5 of us. There were slices of beef, lamb, tripe, shrimp balls, meatballs, noodles, 4-5 shrimp (with head), tofu, quail eggs, and veggies. The spicy broth with dry chili peppers in the pot was too spicy for me, but my dad (who loves spicy foods) really liked it. *Beef Chow Fun ($7.95): Very tasty! They have a great array of Asian grocery items in the store. But oh my goodness the God awful stench when you walk in it's almost too much to bear. It smells like something died and it's rotting in there. The huge selection of items to choose from almost makes up for how terrible the store smells but oh my goodness I tried to get out of there as soon as possible when I go! This is a Taiwanese restaurant in the Montgomery. The restaurant is a grocery store plus restaurant. It going to difficult for them to run out the material since they have the grocery store on the side. They have claim that they the biggest oriental market of the area. I can see not many people will be competing since there not much Chinese in the area. The restaurant side has great food. Tonight we have order the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, Beef Shank, and the Morning intestine. The intestine is cook with Szechuan spicy sauce, scallion, and soft tofu. The food is served over a hot pot. Be careful if you reach the food in the soup sauce. They are temperature hot all time. Please let it cool down before eating or it will burn your tongue. The beef shank is Ok due to it marinate sauce. I personally prefer it to sweet sauce over the sesame oil. The best dish is the spicy beef noodle soup. It came with braise beef serve with chop pickle veggie. Their beef is also close to shank area carry minor tendon. If you braise it correctly, it is very soft and it breaks easily with your tongue press the meat in your mouth. This is how good they are. I can come back to this restaurant to have this dish only. The restaurant is just across the Eastdale Mall. You will not miss it if you are travel at US 231. They have good traffic since some of the customer shop their grocery there and kill two birds in one stone with grocery and restaurant. read more

Mr. Chen's is one of the best Asian markets I've ever been to because they have everything that you may need from vegetables, fruits, meat, snacks, dishes and etc. Also, they have a restaurant which puts out a lot of great food. I've always ordered the salty crispy chicken because it reminded me of being back at home in California, I had looked at the menu some more that night and saw they had it in pork ribs. So I ordered that also with some egg fried rice. I must say I was impressed again, because every time I've come to the store and restaurant I was always impressed and felt the love. You have to walk through a grocery store that is also owned by the restaurant. It's a little awkward, and the bathrooms are located far away and not the cleanest. However, the food is very good. The service is hit or miss sometimes. They seem to change servers very often, and most seem to be students at local colleges. However, the owners are very nice and will help out the servers whenever necessary. My family is very careful about Chinese food as we have MSG sensitivities. When we found out that Mr. Chen's did not use MSG, we had to give it a try. We went for lunch on a Sunday. The menu states on the cover "no MSG used in food," so we were thankful and hopeful. We ordered Crab Rangoons, Chicken and Broccoli, Cashew Chicken, and General Tsos. The dishes came with fried rice or white rice and came with egg drop soup. We loved the Crab Rangoons. The General Tsos was very good with obvious chilies in the recipe. The Cashew Chicken had mushrooms, zucchini, cashews, and chicken. The flavor was good. The Chicken and Broccoli was basic, but also done well. Overall, we were very glad to go to a place that fixed real food without the additives. The service was also very good. The person who loves sweet and sour chicken and crab legs at a buffet is probably not going to be a fan of Mr. Chen's. That's okay, whatever mashes your taters. Mr. Chen's is more on the authentic side of Chinese food. I came here alone one day on a whim and decided to be unreasonable and order two huge entrees. I got the eggplant with pork and the tofu and intestines. Both were really good. I preferred the eggplant dish because I LOVE LOVE LOVE eggplants. The intestines dish was not as spectacular but still good. It had more tofu than intestines and is a Szechuan style dish and am not a huge fan of the spices but I plowed through and inhaled all the intestines quickly anyway. YUMMY intestines! The food was pretty good and the service was really good! Especially for a Chinese restaurant! Bravo for them. The owner (presumably) stood around looking at everyone like a proud father watching his children scarf down food. It was supposed to be 20 min, which was somewhat unusual because it was already 12:50, after the typical Sunday noon rush. Food took 38 min. Then evidently the lunch menu has changed because the price was $10 each for a relatively small lunch portion with rice and an egg roll. No soup doe take out.
