Mr. Chen's is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Montgomery and one of the best that I've ever dined in. The food is amazing and there flavors and spices are beyond the level of other area restaurants. Their staff is friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is a clean and welcoming environment. They have a connected market that is packed with fresh food, produce, and frozen items. Due to the market, their ingredients are extremely fresh. They have an extensive dinner menu. read more

Fantastic Chinese food! This spot is located in a quiet corner of an older plaza. Mr. Chen's has a great market alongside the restaurant. You can go shopping right after you eat! I was very impressed by the authenticity of the food. I tried the Combination Pan Fried Noodles and Ginger and Onion Calamari on this visit. They were fantastic! The pan fried noodles were perfectly cooked. It came with heaping portions of delicious meats and vegetables. The fried calamari was so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I am glad Montgomery has such a delicious, authentic spot in town! I will definitely be back in the future to try the rest of their vast menu. read more

First, customer service was friendly. Now, the problem, the shrimps in the Shrimp Fried Rice was tough. The shrimp with Lobster sauce didn't look like the type of dish I've eaten and seen at any other places. It just didn't look pleased. The sauce looked dirty, I guess from those big chops of mushrooms. The taste of it didn't have that thickness of the sauce to give it more flavor and give more flavor that was needed all around. The shrimp wasn't tender. Whatever that was, I guess the eggs, it was too shredded up too much. For Sweet and Sour Chicken, it was okay, not bad. For all those high prices cost of their food, I would expect the wow factor, and if it was real good, I would have came back, and to see if it was worth it, no matter the price, but NO, it's not worth the 2nd try. So it's a NO for me. read more

The food here is good. You just have to be careful. What you order , make sure you ask questions in Regards to what you're ordering.

Excellent food, genuine Chinese cooking and ingredients. Doesn't look like much from outside but well worth it

Excellent Asian market, food is authentic but can be hit or miss. Sad to say no orange beef for which I compare to other restaurants. Very good fast and friendly service. Ambiance is ok nothing special read more

We ordered about 12 entrees and shared. Everything was excellent! Chicken with black bean sauce was my favorite.

We stop here a good bit, because they have authentic dishes you can't get in most places. Hubby likes the real deal. Here is my Mr. -Chen's take. They do have some of the typical Americanized dishes. If that is your jam, this may not be it. Normally it is really good. Today my sesame chicken and egg roll were not as good as the other 10 or so stops we have made. They have a well-priced lunch menu. The octopus dish that hubs got was unique and spicy. The fried dumplings were great. read more

地道的很！Super authentic Chinese restaurant/ Asian grocery. I lived in central China for several years and this is one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants I've been to stateside! We had boiled dumplings, roast duck, stir fried water spinach, fish flavor eggplant, hot and sour potato strips, salt fried chicken, and cumin beef- all were spot-on and delicious. Do yourself a favor and venture away from the egg rolls and sweet and sour and you'll be rewarded with some of the best homestyle Chinese food you'll find anywhere. And if you're versed in Chinese cuisine there's a variety of odd-menu dishes available, just ask! 5/5, well worth the two hour drive. read more

Mr Chen's restaurant far exceeded my expectations. I wasn't expecting to find any authentic Chinese around here, but it was solid and good. I love sichuan food, and I was hoping for a bit more peppercorn in my food, but it was still very tasty and hit the spot. We ordered SF 21, boiled fish fillet in hot pot. It was huge, two of us ate it and barely finished it. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for something authentic. read more

This is a go-to Chinese spot for groceries and Chinese food! You'll need to walk into the grocery store and the restaurant will be on the left. - Hot Tea: Way too strong and undrinkable. - Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, slight American twist but it was tasty and the chicken was surprisingly tender. I wish there was more cabbage - Eggplant with Pork in a Hot Pot: It was good with a second dish but did not make me want to keep eating Bathrooms are clean and off of the grocery store side. If you want to stock up on Asian groceries, this is the place. The rice is a little expensive but they have a decent selection. Frozen foods, ice cream, seafood, dishes, brooms, produce, bouillon and Vietnamese stuff too. I could survive with this store. read more

YOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Okay. I owe Mr. Chen's an apology, or at least an update. Since my last review, we've given Mr. Chen's a shot, but we went for the dinner options this time. We ordered salty crispy chicken and the eggplant w/ pork in a hot pot. I cannot visit Montgomery without eating here. It is THAT good (to me). The salty crispy chicken is reminiscent of Taiwanese fried chicken street food. The eggplant is so rich and kind of oily in a rare good way that to this day, I am still trying to google the recipe to make this. It warms me up to my soul. Also, the store carries brown sugar boba milk tea ice cream. Yes, you read that right, in the middle of the exotic land that is Montgomery, Alabama, you can find these rare and elusive popsicles here, in Mr. Chen's. I'm probably ruining my mom's secret stash in telling you all this (we keep 4 boxes in the fridge at any given time), but it's SO good. Grab some brown sugar boba milk tea ice cream or Melona pops on the way out, and you've got yourself a very happy day. read more

Mr. Chen's is my grandpa's go-to Chinese restaurant for a couple years now. We've always heard great things about it from my grandpa. So this time when we visited him in Montgomery, we went to Mr. Chen's together to check it out. This place is a Chinese market and restaurant in one. Mr. Chen's is located in the right corner of a large plaza. There's plenty of parking. Walking in, you'll see the small market. To the left, there's a sign directing you to the restaurant. The restaurant area is spacious, has about 4-5 large round tables and about 10 smaller tables. Their menu offers a TON of options. From soups, pork/beef/seafood/chicken entrees, noodles, veggies to hot pot meals and chef's special menu. We ordered two things this time: *Spicy Hot Pot ($59.99/4 people): The hot pot for 4 is VERY generous. I believe hot pot for 2 ($33.99) would have been enough for the 5 of us. There were slices of beef, lamb, tripe, shrimp balls, meatballs, noodles, 4-5 shrimp (with head), tofu, quail eggs, and veggies. The spicy broth with dry chili peppers in the pot was too spicy for me, but my dad (who loves spicy foods) really liked it. *Beef Chow Fun ($7.95): Very tasty! The beef is tender and the noodles were delicious. Definitely, try this if you're a fan of noodles! Service is good. Food arrived promptly and the staff was attentive and nice. Overall, Mr. Chen's a great place to go for authentic Asian food--something that's difficult to find in Montgomery. read more

Went there for lunch last Wednesday. Things started out ok. We were seated promptly as the place wasn't that crowded. We ordered fairly quickly, and our drinks were brought out soon after. The soup was then served and it was very hot and tasted pretty good. And then things went south. After waiting for over an hour to get our main dishes a "VIP" group walks in and 5 minutes later is immediately served. Finally, they brought the food for the other two members of our party and walked away. Ten minutes later, I stopped someone and asked, "Can I please get MY food?" He went to the kitchen and came straight back with my plate of cashew chicken. (It was okay, but a little too sweet.) We had to gobble our food to get back to the office before a meeting. No apology for the long wait. Nothing. I have been coming here for years and have NEVER had this experience. But I am not taking a chance again. Sayanora, Mr. Chen! read more

Very professional, very good food and prompt on getting it to you. Very enjoyable place to eat.

They have a great array of Asian grocery items in the store. But oh my goodness the God awful stench when you walk in it's almost too much to bear. It smells like something died and it's rotting in there. The huge selection of items to choose from almost makes up for how terrible the store smells but oh my goodness I tried to get out of there as soon as possible when I go! I cannot even imagine eating in the restaurant part of the store. read more

This is a Taiwanese restaurant in the Montgomery. The restaurant is a grocery store plus restaurant. It going to difficult for them to run out the material since they have the grocery store on the side. They have claim that they the biggest oriental market of the area. I can see not many people will be competing since there not much Chinese in the area. The restaurant side has great food. Tonight we have order the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, Beef Shank, and the Morning intestine. The intestine is cook with Szechuan spicy sauce, scallion, and soft tofu. The food is served over a hot pot. Be careful if you reach the food in the soup sauce. They are temperature hot all time. Please let it cool down before eating or it will burn your tongue. The beef shank is Ok due to it marinate sauce. I personally prefer it to sweet sauce over the sesame oil. The best dish is the spicy beef noodle soup. It came with braise beef serve with chop pickle veggie. Their beef is also close to shank area carry minor tendon. If you braise it correctly, it is very soft and it breaks easily with your tongue press the meat in your mouth. This is how good they are. I can come back to this restaurant to have this dish only. The restaurant is just across the Eastdale Mall. You will not miss it if you are travel at US 231. They have good traffic since some of the customer shop their grocery there and kill two birds in one stone with grocery and restaurant. read more

I love it there. The service is great and the food to me is amazing 10/10. It's also very clean there.

Mr. Chen's is one of the best Asian markets I've ever been to because they have everything that you may need from vegetables, fruits, meat, snacks, dishes and etc. Also, they have a restaurant which puts out a lot of great food. I've always ordered the salty crispy chicken because it reminded me of being back at home in California, I had looked at the menu some more that night and saw they had it in pork ribs. So I ordered that also with some egg fried rice. I must say I was impressed again, because every time I've come to the store and restaurant I was always impressed and felt the love. This is a great establishment and I will always go to them for all of my Asian needs. read more

This is one of the better Chinese restaurants in Montgomery in terms of food. The entrance is not your typical restaurant entrance. You have to walk through a grocery store that is also owned by the restaurant. It's a little awkward, and the bathrooms are located far away and not the cleanest. However, the food is very good. The service is hit or miss sometimes. They seem to change servers very often, and most seem to be students at local colleges. However, the owners are very nice and will help out the servers whenever necessary. Overall, I like the food and bubble teas that they offer and will continue to visit whenever I am in town. read more

Mr Chens is a great restaurant for takeout. I have probably done takeout from here over 100 times in the past few years and I've never been the least dissatisfied with any oder. Taste, quality, serving size, service, or price. When I do order a sit down meal, I usually follow up with shopping in the market side of the business from fruit to frozen meats to herbs. read more

My family is very careful about Chinese food as we have MSG sensitivities. When we found out that Mr. Chen's did not use MSG, we had to give it a try. We went for lunch on a Sunday. The menu states on the cover "no MSG used in food," so we were thankful and hopeful. We ordered Crab Rangoons, Chicken and Broccoli, Cashew Chicken, and General Tsos. The dishes came with fried rice or white rice and came with egg drop soup. We loved the Crab Rangoons. The General Tsos was very good with obvious chilies in the recipe. The Cashew Chicken had mushrooms, zucchini, cashews, and chicken. The flavor was good. The Chicken and Broccoli was basic, but also done well. Overall, we were very glad to go to a place that fixed real food without the additives. The service was also very good. I would recommend this place to others wanting good Chinese food without the MSG. read more

Truly excellent and authentic Chinese food. They have all the traditional Chinese-American favorites, but if you are willing to dig a little dealer in the menu, you can get something great. The person who loves sweet and sour chicken and crab legs at a buffet is probably not going to be a fan of Mr. Chen's. That's okay, whatever mashes your taters. Mr. Chen's is more on the authentic side of Chinese food. I came here alone one day on a whim and decided to be unreasonable and order two huge entrees. I got the eggplant with pork and the tofu and intestines. Both were really good. I preferred the eggplant dish because I LOVE LOVE LOVE eggplants. The intestines dish was not as spectacular but still good. It had more tofu than intestines and is a Szechuan style dish and am not a huge fan of the spices but I plowed through and inhaled all the intestines quickly anyway. YUMMY intestines! The food was pretty good and the service was really good! Especially for a Chinese restaurant! Bravo for them. The owner (presumably) stood around looking at everyone like a proud father watching his children scarf down food. It was slightly unnerving but I was too busy eating to really be bothered. read more

We ordered roasted duck and braised pork. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever been served. What was supposed to be duck was all bone and skin. The pork was all fat. NO MEAT at all!! When I tried to question what we had been served, she just said this is how "we" eat. I don't care how "you" eat, you don't serve your customers bone and charge 50$!! I will never eat there again. read more
