Friendly Crossways - Merry Christmas from Friendly Crossways!

    Friendly Crossways

    (30 reviews)

(This is on behalf of members of the retreat planning team of Moishe Kavod House)…read more We had our annual retreat at Friendly Crossways. It was a wonderful place for our community to come together, be out of the city, and relax! Mary Helan was SOO very very helpful in for months in advance of the retreat, during the retreat and post retreat. She was wonderful to work with and extremely patient. The facility was beautiful and allowed for a variety of activities, including a huge outdoor field! Overall, it was a wonderful weekend, and we really enjoyed the space.

I recently attended a wedding at the Friendly Crossways and although I had a great weekend with…read morefamily and friends, I think my perspective is different than most of the previous reviewers. As others mentioned there were no other options close by in the Harvard area to stay, so we decided to stay on site (even though I tried to find alternative arrangements). We arrived on Friday and found our room, which had only twin beds (the same for almost all rooms) but were yet to receive our linens (sheets/towels/pillow cases). We did get those later and as another reviewer mentioned they were very worn. You could also not bring in your own pillows or linens (as I had brought) and the party would be fined if they saw you doing so. The bathroom/showers which I saw were pretty outdated and dingy (except the ones near the front door which appear to be newer). They weren't unclean, but were just in desperate need of some TLC. We were also informed of a strict 5 minute shower policy which there are signs posted for in the bathroom. As most have said, it is very much a DIY venue, even so far as to washing your own dishes throughout the weekend. We did help out with a lot throughout the weekend which was fun helping our friends set up their wedding and be a part of it, but many times we would need to ask Mary or Keith (the owners of the property) for assistance or direction with a given task. Most of the time they were very friendly and helpful, but not all the time. I certainly understand they have a job to do, and tasks the Bride/Groom set up for them, and that helping me wasn't on their priority list, but at least be a little bit pleasant because we are paying you to be there. I would have to agree that the food they provided was excellent, and they were able to meet the needs of many dietary issues in our group. If I was reviewing only their food it would be 5 stars, no question. They used fresh ingredients and were very passionate about what came out of the kitchen. The other issue was the firewood. We were lectured that it was to be a "camp fire" and not a "bonfire". We were only provided with about 6 tiny pieces of wood to keep the fire going for our allotted 2 hours...and NO wood was to be put on after 11pm as the fire had to be completely out by midnight... It was nice to be able to just walk back to my room after the wedding/reception. The ceremony was beautiful set back under the trees on the lawn. If you are looking for a DIY wedding where you have to do just about everything for set up and break down then this is probably your place.

Last night I had the steakhouse burger (partner had the same) with sweet potato fries and a glass of their house red. All very good, I would gladly come back for these items. My partner was also happy with his meals both times. The service was wonderful! It was a crowded Friday night, and the bar was full, but we were able to order our wine right away thanks to the attentive bartenders. Our table came up sooner than estimated, and our waiter was attentive and friendly. Our food came out quickly. We'll be back!

There is also a cool vibe like an upscale sports bar. Unfortunately, the food in Littleton was terrible and the service a bit unfriendly. My favorite salmon bowl had overcooked dry salmon, barely any avocado (like only a few tiny cubes) and the sauce was just dumped on it. It was marginally edible. The usually friendly service was not. I tried to get the attention of one waitress from the adjacent table to all ask a simple question. She walked by me twice without stopping. And, on the third time, she told me "I can't help you I'm not your server." The restaurant management needs to come here and up the game.

My husband and I are both vegetarian and good food obsessed, so when we first started planning our wedding, we knew good food was a top priority. It was important to us to have a vegetarian wedding that was delicious and vegetable-focused (and not just boring pastas or tofu steaks). We also knew that lots of our guests were meat-eaters and we wanted to make sure everyone walked away excited about the food. Well, Saltbox completely pulled it off. They worked patiently with us at every step. We gave them the adjective "Ottolenghi-esque" at the beginning and a few other notes about our taste, and they ran with it from there, delivering a draft menu that was amazing and then revising it according to our feedback. Throughout, they were easy to work with and extremely professional, and they pulled off of the details on the day beautifully, with everyone leaving happily stuffed and thrilled. (They even accommodated our gluten-free and dairy-free guests with delicious alternatives.) The waitstaff was also fantastic and helped ensure that my husband and I got enough to eat amidst all the busy-ness and dancing. Now, just a few weeks later, we are constantly hearing from friends and family about how great the food was (the best they've ever had by some accounts), asking for Saltbox's name, and remarking about how they completely forgot that they were eating vegetarian for the night because every dish was so delicious. I have been to lots of weddings and frankly, most of the food is not memorable. Saltbox's food absolutely was.

The Venue & Team: Having grown up in the next town over, Gibbet Hill has always held a special place in my heart. It's where my husband and I went on early dates and celebrated anniversaries, so when we got engaged, I dreamed of a beautiful winter wedding at The Barn. I honestly assumed it would be outside of our budget, but after touring multiple venues, I quickly realized that Gibbet Hill was right on par in price--and incredibly willing to work with any budget. Nothing else compared. Nothing checked all the boxes the way The Barn did. Shoutout Bree--our coordinator, planner, event manager, director of sales, and overall wedding miracle worker. She is FANTASTIC, and I cannot speak highly enough of her. From our very first phone call, she walked me through every option, every detail, every add‑on--with endless patience. I had quite a bit of anxiety around planning, especially since we didn't start until about seven months before the big day, but she made the entire experience seamless. With 300+ weddings under her belt, she knew exactly how to guide us. She helped us design our menu, advised us on where to splurge or save, coordinated the timeline with all our vendors, and even bustled my dress. She made sure we had a quiet 15‑minute moment together after the ceremony--just us, taking it all in with appetizers. She went above and beyond in every single way to make our day easy, special, and absolutely stress‑free. We LOVED working with her. The Space: The barn itself is stunning--warm, elegant, and adaptable. It's spacious enough for a 200‑person celebration yet intimate enough for smaller weddings. We had 75 guests, and the way they set up and decorated the room made it feel breathtakingly beautiful. The Food: OUT. FREAKING. STANDING. Our guests are still talking about it six months later. We chose family‑style dining, and it was such a fun, interactive experience--everyone loved getting to try everything rather than choosing just one entrée. The steak, the fish, the mushroom cream tortellini (incredible!), the broccolini, the mashed potatoes--everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. I would recommend the family‑style option a thousand times over. The Staff: Every single person--from the waitstaff to the bartenders to the behind‑the‑scenes team--was phenomenal. A special shoutout to Shannon, our dedicated server for the night. She kept our drinks topped off, reminded me to switch into comfortable shoes, and made sure we were having the best day of our lives. If you're considering getting married at The Barn at Gibbet Hill--do it. Planning with their team is smooth, easy, and completely stress‑free. It was everything we dreamed of and more. I can't recommend it highly enough!

So the time comes and we're pulling up and I ask the boy where we're going. He says "there" and points to a really cute looking historic home. I swear I must have let out a sigh of relief at that point. The place was really quaint with old wallpaper and furniture. It's like visiting your great grandparents house, that sort of feel. We had the whole place to ourselves, but spent the time downstairs where there was a full kitchen, dining room area and living room. The perfect space for the number of guests that came. Upstairs is a big room that's all cleared out with a little stage. I hear they teach ballroom dancing to kids here once a week, which I think is fantastic. Overall I was impressed with the place and was happy my family had picked someplace a little more unique for the day. Now if only I can convince the boy to someday move back to Acton so the future offspring can take dance lessons here!
