My husband and I are both vegetarian and good food obsessed, so when we first started planning our wedding, we knew good food was a top priority. It was important to us to have a vegetarian wedding that was delicious and vegetable-focused (and not just boring pastas or tofu steaks). We also knew that lots of our guests were meat-eaters and we wanted to make sure everyone walked away excited about the food. Well, Saltbox completely pulled it off. They worked patiently with us at every step. We gave them the adjective "Ottolenghi-esque" at the beginning and a few other notes about our taste, and they ran with it from there, delivering a draft menu that was amazing and then revising it according to our feedback. Throughout, they were easy to work with and extremely professional, and they pulled off of the details on the day beautifully, with everyone leaving happily stuffed and thrilled. (They even accommodated our gluten-free and dairy-free guests with delicious alternatives.) The waitstaff was also fantastic and helped ensure that my husband and I got enough to eat amidst all the busy-ness and dancing. Now, just a few weeks later, we are constantly hearing from friends and family about how great the food was (the best they've ever had by some accounts), asking for Saltbox's name, and remarking about how they completely forgot that they were eating vegetarian for the night because every dish was so delicious. I have been to lots of weddings and frankly, most of the food is not memorable. Saltbox's food absolutely was.

They had way better sculptures - large, landscape scale ones - in the entry area. More interactive. Minus the slanted house, everything acquired since Covid is pretty terrible, some even very cheap looking. Example, photographs... outdoors?! Attached to wood posts like cheap yard signs. Trellis with hanging fabric with cheap-looking patterns that looked like samples from Joanne's Fabrics... attached to structure that looked like playground set... not really developed. This idea of walking between hanging things has been done by countless others way better. A couple other sculptures were interesting themselves, but supports were so not thought through or developed. Looked like an afterthought, and attracted more attention or equal to the work. The "crystal" one was more interesting, but seems too precious to be outdoors. It's more of an indoor piece. Older works by Dan Graham, Jaume Plesna, Jim Dine, Joseph Wheelwright, Marianna Pineda are great. Smallest Kenneth Snelson I have ever seen... I counted 10 interesting works. 10. And indoor museum is closed for renovation. $14 entry, out of way location. Not coming back unless they dramatically improve curation. Look at New Orleans Museum of Art's sculpture garden for some inspiration. Storm King might be out of this league, but NOMA should be comparable.

The house and the grounds are gorgeous and allowed for the perfect flow of guests around and through the house, porch, lawn, pond and tent area. The couple opted to have their cocktail hour first. Guests mingled outside (they lucked out and had a warm sunny late afternoon) while appetizers were passed. There was an open bar set up on the porch. It was delightful. An hour later, the guests were asked to walk down to the pond where chairs had been set up for the outdoor ceremony. After this we walked back up to the tent where dinner was served. Everything worked seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly...although it's clear a lot of thought and effort went into the planning. My only issue is that the parking area is very small and tight. If there is overflow parking, I don't know where that is. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this venue to anyone looking to host a wedding or any other event.

Codman Estate is part of Historic New England. I have only been inside the house once for an abbreviated self guided tour a few years ago during a free admission day that Historic New England hosts (I think the start of June on a Saturday is when they host this usually- the year I went was in 2023). You can go for a paid tour of the house for a cost... tours happens select weekends for a certain part of the year (I think June to October?)

With our events, we tend to have people complain that we're so far from Boston (and getting to the Conference Center isn't so either either), but the venue is cheaper than hosting a conference in Boston. Unfortunately, your only nearby dinner choices are places like Bertuccis and Naked Fish. The breakfast/snacks/lunch and the amenities (like plugs in every seat) are better than anything you'll find in the city and overall it's worth hosting a conference here over the city especially if your guests have no preference for location.
