My partner and I do not come from families that understand investment, long-term financial planning, or even basic principles of how to make money work for and with you. We were interested in getting help sorting out our finances and helping us come up with plans that serve our long-term goals, but we were really nervous about using planners through financial institutions/banks (you hear horror stories about smarminess and competing contingencies, like kick-backs that make the planner not make decisions that are actually in your interest, but theirs). I found Ethan and his team through yelp; the reviews, as you can tell, were exceedingly glowing, so we decided to set up a meeting with Ethan to learn a little bit more about his services and see whether it might be a fit. Right away, Ethan distinguished himself (in actions and stance) from the fears we'd had about working with a financial planner. He illustrated genuine (not affected) interest in our experience, learning history around money, emotions around money (fears, anxieties, etc.), and goals. Throughout these initial discussions, it became clear that he was someone who was interested in helping us get what we wanted, not in imposing what he (or anybody else) could want for us. He also helped us clarify what we wanted, by providing sophisticated education to help clear the smog of fears and anxieties (based on our own ignorance) to help us get clarity on what actually mattered to us.
