Two things that I found worth mentioning about this great little place. 1. They have a crunchy salmon roll that is above and beyond any roll we have had anywhere. 2. I think the sushi was good and the service was excellent with reasonable prices. The shrimp tempura roll as well as the California roll were very good. We had a spicy tuna roll that wasn't spicy, and it tasted a tiny bit fishy. We ordered the edamame and it was overflowing, although not salted. They were also stingy with the ginger and the wasabi. I think all of the above are likely just growing pains, and I look forward to trying them again. read more

It is takeout only. The sushi is fresh and tasted good, although a bit pricer compared to other sushi places nearby. We ordered black pearl maki, black dragon maki, snow roll, and tako su. Our favorite was black dragon maki. Snow roll was fresh but a bit shapeless. It was hard to pick it up using chopsticks without breaking it. My only complaint is that they put a table and a chair to block the front door so that no one can reach the front door. I guess I was supposed to wait on the side way until someone from inside to open the door for me..... anyway, it was so confusing that I in fact went in the Indian restaurant next door.... I understand that they probably don't want anyone to get into their restaurant maybe due to COVID. However, cannot they find an alternative way instead of blocking their front door?! read more

Gen Sushi is a very solid sushi option in Belmont. I've never actually eaten there, but I've ordered from them many time. If you do plan on dining in, Mae sure that they are open for seating by calling them, as recently, they haven't been. My family ordered their large platter, which was ready in about 40 minutes. The sushi itself was okay. Gen Sushi comes up with many creative options for rolls, and many of them are showcased on their large platter. The quality of the fish is good, but some of their roll combination had too much seasoning, to the point where it was completely overwhelming the taste of the fish. In the future, if I am ordering alone, I would probably get some of their simpler rolls. read more

WOW I am so impressed with this little sushi joint!! Ordered takeout- a sushi sashimi combo for $65 and a snow roll for $18. Amazing value for the amount of high quality food you get. All the fish was super fresh, well cut. The rice was well made. The rolls, particularly the snow roll, were all well made with delicious combinations. The nigiri was reallllly tasty, with different glazes and sauces for each kind of fish. Also came with miso soup. Will definitely return! This could have easily fed 3 people. read more

Sushi and the covid precautions taken were both exceptional, though the wait can be a bit long. My partner and I ordered various sushi rolls, and the staff were extremely accommodating with my requests (they made a shrimp tempura avocado roll for us despite it not being on the menu!). The fish was all so fresh and the toro left me wanting moreee. They are currently takeout only and when busy, can take a while to finish an order, so call well ahead of time. My order took 1 hour. Staff were all wearing masks, disinfecting pens between use. Will definitely be back! read more

Coming down to 3 stars. Waited 40 min in person after arriving on time 45 min post order. Sushi was solid, but rainbow roll was real fishy.

First, I'm Japanese and grew up in Japan for first 30 years of my life. My family did a take out tonight. First, miso soup was terrible. I passed it on to the rest of my family and they all said it's just a salty water. I can make better miso soup. I ordered my standard Chirashi Sushi. I order this for every new sushi shop. It was quite offensive in a few ways. First, sushi rice is not warm. It is a dead give away that this place is not run by trained sushi chef. Any real sushi chef knows that sushi is served best on body temp rice. Rice of my chirashi was cold. Not only rice is cold, they put flavoring on rice. That kills mild flavored fish taste. This is the 3rd strike already. Amount of rice to fish is also wrong. Most non-Japanese places do it wrong by providing too much rice but for mine, it was too little rice with too much flavoring. It is really killing rice flavor. Rice should be slightly warm, slightly sweet from sake and mirin. Fish were okay. Octopus was cooked right. Quality of fish isn't top notch but it's about average. Portion isn't generous however. It's better than supermarket sushi, but not by much. I would say this place is below average sushi. I don't understand why Yelp has such high marks for this place. Everything about food here is below average at best. I would not recommend here. Only reason I tried this place is because Toraya in Arlington had to close due to landlord of Toyara forced them out. read more

Want to get a light dinner before rock climbing. Only found this restaurant nearby, so I decided to have a try. Had sashimi dinner. It was mediocre - the fish tasted fresh, but the combination was weird. There's sriracha sauce on octopus, and pickled radish on white tuna. Looking for a good sushi spot, my friend and I somehow ended up at this sushi spot in Belmont. Yeah, the place is small. However, the flavors are out of this world. We started with the Yellowtail Jalapeño--an app with yellowtail, jalapeño without seeds on top, cover in a lime and soy sauce mix--and while simple, it was beautifully executed. After the app, we got five rolls. Each maki had such attention to detail and were super yummy. Special shoutout to the Unagi and Spicy Scallop rolls! Waitstaff was very attentive, and refilled the water a plentiful amount of times. Sushi in the Boston area as a whole is lower quality than that of other metro areas, but Gen Sushi definitely beats the curve. They have a sashimi combo - $30 for 18 pieces - pretty good. The fish tasted super fresh. It came with some really fatty, marbled toro. Some of the fish pieces were also so well-marinated. A few of the pieces were cut pretty small, so that's my only gripe. A few nights ago, my roommates and I went to Gen Sushi for my birthday dinner. It's a cute, unassuming neighborhood gem. We decided to get the platter which is meant for 2, but actually was enough for 3 of us. It comes with 2 miso soups, and we added a miso soup. Additionally we got the shumai for appetizers. While the miso soup didn't have much umami/depth to it, and shumai was just average, the sushi here is the real star. The cuts were perfect for the nigiri and I barely used any extra soy sauce or wasabi. The salmon and tuna were personal favorites. Yellowtail was also decent. For someone who doesn't eat sushi that often, this was a great find. For the dessert, we went with the mochi ice cream (one of each flavor). I couldn't tell if it was store bought, but it was nice refreshing end to our meal. The green tea flavor was probably my favorite. It was served with fresh mango and oranges. Definitely give it a shot if you're in the area. read more

Stopped by on a Friday night and there was no wait. The place is pretty small, two groups of tables and maybe 6 bar seats. After we placed our order, the server told us there will be a wait, I guess they have a lot of take out orders and only one sushi chef making everything. Ordered the sashimi dinner ($28) and it came with miso soup. Things went downhill from there: - Miso soup was super bland. Mix of old (soggy and brown) seaweed and green seaweed, which makes me think that brown piece of seaweed's been sitting there for awhile. - Sriracha on the surf clam, why? I'd be less upset if it was spicy mayo. - White fish with a mango soy sauce, not a fan - There was 1 piece of tuna and it was chewy/stringy - White fish sashimi (fluke?) was icy frozen, it was like eating a chunk of ice. Lol, yeah no thanks! When I ordered "sashimi dinner", I expected a plate of raw fish (no frills, no sauces, maybe some scallion or ginger toppings), NOT sriracha or mango soy sauce. It was a nice gesture to serve oranges and pineapple after the meal, but the pineapple looked straight up old. Service was ok, it got the job done I guess. For the prices charged, they can at least update the menus and tables. They were so worn. Things didn't add up for me and honestly wasn't worth the money. There were a lot of people doing take out, so there must be SOMETHING worth ordering here. Avoid the sashimi dinner. read more

While it all tasted okay and did satiate some cravings, the sushi, which looked amazing at first, was missing a few things. First of all, I couldn't identify my spicy tuna roll because the tuna was not red in color but a brownish-beige color. That was off putting. Then while the eel and avocado roll tasted yummy, it was missing eel sauce. Most sushi places will add eel sauce, which is basically teriyaki sauce, on top. However, Gen Sushi doesn't offer teriyaki entrees and doesn't have to prepare teriyaki sauce in advance. So, I'm thinking that's why they don't bother adding it to their eel and avocado roll. The nigiri pieces are huge, and my salmon tasted fresh, but the fish looked like sashimi pieces just laid on top of medium sized portions of sushi rice. So, the fish is not shaped onto the sushi rice and falls off when you try to pick it up with chopsticks. I enjoyed the miso soup, which came jumbo sized and had huge chunks of tofu. Gen Sushi is one of those places that will surprise you, in one way or another. First, it's located in Belmont in a location that doesn't have many other restaurants. It is on Concord, which is a very busy street, but parking is still really easy to find. When you walk into the restaurant, it's surprising how small it is. There are only two 4-person tables and one 2-person table. Then there is a sushi bar that can seat maybe 5-6 people. The lack of seating does explain why during our meal, there seemed to be many take-out orders being picked up. It's a very cozy environment and the staff is extremely friendly. It almost feels like you're eating in someone's dining room. I came here with my parents and my son, and despite their small space, they had a high-chair available for my son to sit in. The menu itself is fairly simple. It's a fairly simple menu so it's easy to make a choice. We ordered a Chirashi, the Sashimi Dinner, a couple rolls and a few appetizers. It was definitely some of the freshest sushi and sashimi that I've had in Boston. I was really impressed with the quality. The Chirashi came with Uni (sea urchin) also, which was awesome. I'd recently become a fan of uni, and it added a really nice touch to the entire Chirashi. The sashimi dinner had HUGE pieces of sashimi. I guess I must be used to restaurants skimping on what they give you in the name of cost cutting. But the pieces were not only big, but super tasty too. Speaking of price, that's probably the only thing that may be negative. They've definitely priced in the premium quality of the food here. As a point of comparison, we had a gigantic meal the night before at an izakaya place and the bill at Gen ended up being higher. I enjoyed the meal at Gen more though - so that take for what it is. Took almost an hour after that for the rest of the food to show up. Why couldn't the sushi chef prepare a roll and pass it to us in between making orders for someone that's not there I'm not really sure. It made me quite upset and kids started getting restless also. Food tasted ok but not worth the time. Took two hours to get through a meal that really should have taken about 45 minutes. I wanted to order more but didn't want to wait another hour. Brand new organic sushi spot. I generally dont do sushi so today I got a cooked lunch entree. The chicken teriyaki lunch is amazing. It came with rice, crab sushi, shumai, miso soup and green salad. It was a steal at $9. The teriyaki chicken is delicious and tender and highly recommended. The crab rolls were fresh. I also got an order of steamed meat gyoza which were........AWESOME. Have been looking for decent and reasonably priced traditional sushi (not maki) in the Boston area forever, and finally came across Gen Sushi! Ordered sushi dinner- every piece of fish was super fresh. Especially the O-Toro was one of the best I have had on the east coast, it melts in your mouth! Portion is generous, I can barely finish the plate that costs only $25. As some comments below mention, it's a husband and wife team with the husband doing the majority of sushi prep work- so be a little bit patient! The food is well worth the wait. The only thing, if anything, is that there's a bit too much rice in each piece of sushi in my opinion, but I guess that's more of a personal preference. Will be back! read more

I write this review with a very heavy heart. This is easily some of the best sushi I have ever tasted. The rolls are just the right ratio of rice to filling so that you truly taste the sushi. I have been going here for 2 years. It started where we were ordering or dining in one or sometimes, twice a week. Last year they had someone as support to help with the phone and the appetizers, but it only has been the two (chef, and order taker) since. I referred this place to everyone I knew as the best sushi, I mean the reviews are true, and speak to the quality... however I need to caution you... In the past year... I have been quoted a time of 30 mins to 45 mins and have had to wait an additional hour. The fish has been frozen. My order was wrong, despite ordering the same thing every week and their knowing my name. Dining in, I have had to wait because of take out orders to the point we have almost left. In complete disclosure, I have called and expressed my dissatisfaction on three separate occasions. I have been offered that if I turn around, or come back if I notice at home they can make me another roll. I don't have the luxury of time to do that. I am not looking for any sort of hand out, but it amazes me how little they care about repeat business. I have not been offered any sort of "free appetizer" or complimentary anything for our waiting. In fact, the most recent order was last week and called, and they said 45 mins. We timed it, and waited an additional half hour, once we got there our rolls were not done. When I mentioned what we did, they did not catch my sarcasm and said thank you for understanding. The rolls were sloppily made and fell apart. We are done. It may take some time, but I am confident I will be able to find another sushi restaurant that is worthy of the 10% of my paycheck that goes to sushi weekly. read more
