Kaiserhoff is where one's referred to for German food in New Ulm, although by their banners and advertisements, they'd rather be known for their barbecue ribs. The place is full of paintings and murals depicting scenes of Germany. The menu has a German section, so that's what we ordered from. We were their only customers mid afternoon on a weekday, so service was attentive. The first item on their menu is wiener schnitzel, and we both made it our choice, with a salad as the side. The salad was pretty plain - some lettuce with a cucumber slice and cherry tomato with oil and vinegar on the side. Dark rye bread also was brought, and this was the best part of the meal. There must be a bakery nearby that knows how to bake, as it was the freshest and most tasty rye bread I've ever had. The wiener schnitzel was the real deal - as you cut into it, the juices ran out. The red cabbage was not too vinegary like a lot of others cook it; their's was mellow. I didn't like their style of spätzle though; too dumpling based. If anything, just being here for the decor will make you feel a little like in Germany. read more

Choosing the stars is difficult. The food was very good home cooking ... 5 stars there! The server we had was nice and good ... 4 stars there. The hostess/manager was too busy to talk to me when I had a request, said she would get a server and then came back without a word with the drink that I had requested ... 2 stars there. I would go back. I loved the German food, and the dark old fashioned atmosphere was relaxed and felt like my grandparents rec. room. The sauerkraut is made with chicken (?) With apologies to my mother, who said "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".... In this case, I have to do a review. Our entire group of 18 grew up in the area and knew for this occasion this was the place to go. The German experience and food was the draw. The food is why it is unlikely we will ever return for a meal. (They still have an epic style bar you know, so there is that draw. Schell's and Grain Belt are brewed in New Ulm and is served here.) Perhaps they prepare fresh for the Thur - Saturday crowd. The Potato salad had no sliced potatoes structure, they were mashed potato consistency, the sauerkraut was not crisp, it was soft and mushy, the beet salad disappointing as well. The ribs. I love pork spareribs. Everywhere. These were overcooked and dry. Chewy and not meaty. Some said way too fatty, vs meaty. Everyone can have a bad day. This had to be it. Not one of the 18 meals had a good review from any of us. It was consistent across the board from sampler to Schnitzel.... Our German cousins invited us to Milwaukee for some real German cuisine.....Ouch. On the positive side, the service was good. Nice, if spartan decor. Real memories for our family. Our party of 6 settled in for a traditional German dining experience during a lovely Octoberfest weekend. After a round of expertly prepared cocktails (I personally enjoyed a house Brandy on the rocks), we decided to begin the culinary journey with the Famous Sauerkraut Balls (FSB). The FSB are heralded a "a must for sauerkraut lovers"; we didn't find them to be that exactly. The fried morsels were crispy and golden brown on the outside with a filling akin to a moist crab cake - perhaps reaching the maximum level of moistness possible. This starter was served a small tub of tangy (and impressively orange) Ray's Sauce for dipping. Another round of cocktails was presented by our experienced and jovial server. This round was local Schell's Octoberfest beer. Ja vohl! We placed our orders next and received strong recommendations for ribs. Our server convincingly detailed their preparation and most of the table bought what our server was selling! The loin cut was a clear draw as was the homemade BBQ sauce our server raved about. Entrees are served with a salad and side dish. The available side dishes include the standard potato options but showcased German potato salad and spätzle - and it was a mix between the two around the table. When asked for recommendations on salad, our server definitively said that Ray's Salad was the only way to go here. Seeing as she hadn't steered us wrong all evening - we all agreed the upcharge was well worth it. For those who haven't yet sampled Ray's unique lettuce treat, I'll break it down. First, let's talk Baco's - if you are one of the people that thought Baco's went away with the Reagan administration - you'd be wrong. The Ray's Salad consists of finely chopped iceberg, a generous scoop or two of the imitation bacon treat, and is finished with the now ubiquitous Ray's Sauce. What was most impressive was the fact that each individual piece of lettuce was completely covered in the orange dressing. That's the attention to detail this place is known for. *Bonus #1: Ray's Salads are hand prepared by your server! *Bonus #2: Ray's Salads are served with a hot hot breadstick! With table talk growing in intensity about the culinary experience unfolding in front of our eyes, our sextet graduated to beverage spread of house red wine, scotch, and more ice cold lagers. We certainly were becoming the focal point amongst that evening's diners. Entree time! Ribs, ribs, and more ribs. As the meat was wheeled out; you literally had to pick our party's jaws off the table. The mutual amazement began with the familiar scent of Ray's Sauce (referred to as BBQ Sauce when applied to ribs) and deepened with the sight of the ribs themselves; none of us had considered that ribs can take on a hue reminiscent of a vibrant autumn sunset. If you want to try ribs slathered with salad dressing and flame grilled until tender - this is your place. The meat had a tenderness only reachable through vigilant basting with Ray's bittersweet creation. I will admit to not being too impressed with the potato salad. The generous portion of dumplings was suspended in a solution of simple syrup and vinegar (presumably). I didn't try the potato salad with Ray's Sauce (rookie mistake); however, I could have - we were presented with a breakfast syrup crock filled to the brim with Ray's Sauce. We didn't leave room for dessert. We risked it anyway with the potential crowd and they definitely didn't disappoint!! Wonderful food, great, friendly service, and a cool atmosphere. It is heart wrenching to write this review. This place used to be wonderful. After the past 3 visits it's a no go now. Ribs are made in Advance, days in advance taste old, like they had been stored in open containers in refrigerator. Dumpling was undercooked and was a strange gray goo. Asked for one cooked they returned with same thing. It was scary, not even the right color. They charged us .75 cents for a second piece of bread. When paying 15.00 for a meal and you get the butt of the loaf of bread you think they could include a second piece of bread. We were told it's because it's from bakery. (Lol) how sad... to top it off we both felt sick after eating what we did eat. It was terrible. read more

My friend and I were referred to this restaurant after visiting Schell's and requesting a good German restaurant. I honestly have never had authentic German food, so please note that I do not have any experience with the authenticity of my meal. I am writing this based on the edibility of the food, so take it for what it is worth. I didn't have a problem with this place as the food went down, stayed down, and didn't taste bad at all. The drinks also came to me faster than any other place I have ever visited. I ordered the weiner schnitzel with the initial side choice of German potato salad. Due to the fact that I am a black woman, I cannot honestly comment on the taste or quality of the potato salad as it was not anywhere near what I was expecting (yes, I have always know it was served hot, but I was expecting a hot version of what I am used to). Suffice it to say, I asked for spaetzle instead. That was also very interesting. It came with a side of brown gravy which did add a lot of flavor to the otherwise German version of a noodle. My friend ordered the German sampler platter with Ray's salad. The bratwurst in my opinion was PHENOMENAL. The sauerkraut was also very good, and unfortunately, I cannot remember what the other sausage was called, but it was also pleasant. I walked away from this restaurant with the conclusion that German meat is very well-seasoned and those who make it obviously know that sauerkraut is awesome with bratwurst. Now, people keep talking about the decor and I say don't let that deter you from going here. It is not dilapidated, but full of woodwork and, well, wood. As long as the restaurant isn't reminiscent of a haunted house (by ghosts, insects/pests, or otherwise), I will try it out. Long story short, I think it is at least worth checking out if you are going to be in New Ulm for longer than two days. First I want to say I'm super empathetic to the fact that restaurants are struggling right now trying to find workers. They are completely overwhelmed and I absolutely show grace when presented a situation like this while eating out. However all that doesn't constitute being downright rude and disengaging. We stopped here for lunch on Saturday the 1st and as soon as we walked in the bartender who was ten feet away didn't acknowledge us even though he looked at us. There was a wait to be seated sign so we just stood there as people lined up behind us out the door. We stood there for ten minutes without a "hey we will be right with ya, or sorry guys we are running behind it's just a short wait"! but nothing. Two waitresses (one who was very rude in her mannerisms) like we were in her way walked right by us without saying a word. The people behind us left. The bartender just went about his business chatting with the 4 people who were at the bar. Finally my husband approached him very nicely and said "Hey just wondering do we seat ourselves? Because we haven't even been acknowledged yet?" and he bartender said "No, you need to wait, we only have twowaitresses on staff and we are busy." no apology or nothing. Again, I am empathetic to the fact they were probably understaffed but they need to work on at least acknowledging people who walk through the door. We left like the folks behind us but a bummer because I was excited to treat my family to a New Ulm German experience. read more

It's been quite a few years since our last visit to the Kaiserhoff. It's exactly as I remember it. We had very friendly service, food came out fast, and everything tasted very nice. The ribs are exceptional, and I can't leave without having a Ray salad. But it wouldn't be complete without having an ice cold Schells Deer Brand Beer. read more

The $20 German Sampler was disgusting. This was a pathetic attempt at German food. The place smelled. The bread was cheap soft sliced pumpernickel you could get at a grocery store. The special sauce is like thousand island dressing and check out the pic of the authentic German mustard. Seriously, this place could be a joke but it's not funny. Please remember that Kaiserhoff is an Americanized German restaurant .The dishes will not be like you find in Dusseldorff or Berlin. The ribs never disappoint. The Rays salad is always good. I was surprised the last time I ate there by the German potato salad. It was overly sweet and not as tart and zingy as I remember it was in past visits. Welcome to New Ulm, the only city where someone ever asked if the Taco fast food restaurant had German tacos. Kraut Tacos... maybe she had something there. At any rate, they have some here and lots of it. The interior is cozy and very warm (old people dine here and therefore determine the temperature setting clearly). The first dining room to your left as you walk in has working old school jukeboxes in mint condition. It felt like a German restaurant that hadn't changed since 1955 and you know what? I'm cool with that. As long as it wasn't 1945. The first time I came here I was served by a model tall very gracious waitress delivering my Schell and landjaeger before I jetted out of town for the week. The 'jaeg' as she referred to it (I thought that only went with the shots?) was great (see picture). It was a little more expensive than I would've guessed but hey that's what expense accounts are for. The next time I went with some coworkers and we shared the sampler and then some, stuffing ourselves with all sorts of things I swore off months ago. No red meat or high carbs? That went out the door like a Frenchman off the battlefield... At any rate the highly touted ribs were decent though their sauce that makes them famous is an interesting one you may or may not agree with. I'm still not so sure, preferring to stick to my Kansas City bold tomato based sauces. The Kraut balls dip well in to it, however and that is my recommended appetizers. Salads come in two kinds, 'lettuce salad' and their specialty. Lettuce is plain (we should've guessed) and comes with peas on it or the specialty which is another interesting sauce this one of which my group warned me about ahead of time. Haven't experienced many German restaurants, I came to the conclusion on my own that this was at best an OK dining experience. By the way, if you visit New Ulm on a Sunday, many of the shops are closed. Go Saturday instead! And try Lola's Larkspur across the street and down a block. It looked like a unique and comfortable place to hang out and the menu in the window looked tempting. It too, closed on Sunday. First, I have to say that the service here was friendly, helpful and attentive. They'd easily get four stars for service. The interior is what you would expect when visiting a German restaurant. Decorated with dark wood, an interior that hadn't been updated for some 30 or 40 years. The seasonal Schell Oktoberfest brew-perfect. The rye bread and butter from the local co-op also very tasty. Homemade chicken spatzel soup, warmed me up on that breezy fall afternoon. I liked the red cabbage, the perfect amount of tangy-ness. My dining experience had peaked at this point, had this been where I stopped, all would have been well. On the downside, the famous Sauerkraut Balls were determined to be undercooked. The first thing that came to mind was, State Fair food! They could put these on a stick, properly cook them and I think they'd be a hit. The combination of flavors were good, think sauerkraut and German sausage meets hush puppy. Wiener Schnitzel had a strange after taste, the best I can tell is it was something with the oil it was fried in. The Apple Strudel was microwaved to a warm, rubbery and hard to cut with a fork texture. They prior occupant of the table could have been locking fingers etc. Strike 4: No butter brought with baked potatoes. Strike 5: Two thirds through salad and entree arrives. I use to live in New Ulm and can remember eating at then Kaiserhoff. It was as delicious as I remembered. I started with Ray's salad and of course had the ribs with the famous Kaiserhoff sauce for my entree. I washed it all down with a Premium Grain Belt beer. If you are in Minnesota, anywhere in Minnesota, you need to drive to New Ulm and try the baby back ribs at the Kaiserhoff! As a bonus, you can buy the famous Kaiserhoff sauce by the bottle. I highly recommend getting the Lewie Bensen special - a half rack of ribs and a Ray's salad, with a breadstick. The prices are excellent. The staff is always welcoming and attentive. If you want a truly authentic German atmosphere this side of the pond, its hard to find more authentic than New Ulm, MN. As a result its hard to find better German food than Kaiserhoff. If I hadn't been hired by and subsequently gone to train for a company in Minnesota, I would never have known this place existed. And if not for some knowledgeable Twin Cities residents, I never would've made the drive to this distant Minnesota town. Well thank you all for sending me here. I cherish it to this day. I actually tried this place back in 2004 when I lived in MN, but just went back a week ago during my business trip. It hasn't changed. And thats a good thing. For my money, it doesn't get any better than the German Sampler. Two kinds of sausage, boiled ribs, german potatoes, and cabbage. It'll fill you up, it takes amazing, and it goes down beautifully with a good german style beer. And whatdayaknow, there just happen's to be a local german inspired brewery named Schell. The winter blend was a perfect pairing with the sampler platter. The ambience of the place is as authentic German as you'd expect. The owner greets you cheerfully as you come in and gleefully wishes you well as you leave. The wait staff looks the part and is extremely friendly. You feel every bit of that warm small town hospitality from start to finish. This place is perfect for small groups, and people drive over from towns miles away to join in. They also have a bar area which is pretty busy after work and stocked full of Schell's brews on tap among many others. I really could spend hours just hanging out here (and some do). I may not be able to convince most of you to make the trip to MN anytime soon, but if you should ever find yourself there. Grab a map, take about an hour drive southwest of the Twin Cities and stop by New Ulm for a couple hours and take in the authentic german atmosphere. Loved our visit to New Ulm. Looked forward to a good solid German meal and was referred to the Kaiserhoff. Walking in, I couldn't smell anything resembling the German food I grew up eating. The place, as large as it is, was empty at dinner time and we should have followed our instincts and left. Well, we were committed now, each of the four of us ordering something different to share, with no one really pleased. Their "famous" salad was a disaster, limp greens overdressed in a heavy creamy dressing. The sauerkraut was cloyingly sweet and the wurst just so so. We have been only once but were disappointed. When you order the most well known German dish, Weiner schnitzel, you expect it to be good in a "German restaurant". It was strange. The meat was chewy and the coating was falling off the meat. The red cabbage was overdone and had an overpowering taste of vinegar. The German potato salad was goopy and too sweet. "Amazing Authentic German Food." We were in town visiting family and it just happened to be Oktoberfest weekend. We went late, nearly 8pm and were seated pretty fast considering how packed it was. The atmosphere was awesome, exposed beams, awesome old pictures. The waitstaff and servers we saw were all very friendly and gave excellent service. Several stopped to make sure we were doing ok. The food was beyond amazing! They were low on some menu items but given that it was Oktoberfest and late in the day that was understandable. They gladly substituted the item for us. We ordered Sauerkraut balls as an appetizer and they were wonderful. Sauerkraut and Braised ribs and a special with sausage/brat, hot german potato salad, and Sauerkraut. Warm rolls to go with it. I wish I could give half stars so I could go 3.5. My meal was awesome. I had the Brat and hot German potato salad that came with kraut and rye bread and an appetizer breadstick. Best potato salad ever, and I've never liked a hot German potato salad before. Ever. My brat was delicious and the rye bread went perfectly with the potato salad. Now for the negatives: First, this is a German town with a brewery in town. You darn tootin' better have some draft beer on tap. Oops. They were out today. There are two very good reasons to go to Veigel's Kaiserhoff. One is the ribs. The other, believe it or not, is the fried chicken. The ribs are always fantastic; they are nicely trimmed, the meat is tender, and the sauce is unique and delicious. For the record, it is NOT a "Thousand Island" dressing as some people have assumed. It's more closely related to a Russian dressing - think Miracle Whip, Frank's Hot Sauce, garlic powder. The ribs are boiled in a highly flavored broth and then slathered with sauce and grilled. The fried chicken is like nothing you get anyplace else. It's not Broaster chicken. It has a shatteringly crispy, perfectly seasoned crust, and the meat inside is tender and juicy. Wonderful. We prefer to sit in the bar when we eat at the Kaiserhoff. The black vinyl booths, mirrored bar back, big mural, and of course the jukebox, give the place a wonderful vintage vibe. Plus you're that much closer to the Schell's beer that's on tap! Schell's is so much better on tap than it is out of the bottle, and as an accompaniment to the ribs and chicken, it can't be beat. Frankly, the only thing holding me back from giving the Kaiserhoff a full five stars is the side dishes. The last time we were there (about a week ago as of this writing), we had ribs and chicken, both of which were perfection, but the German potato salad was rubbery and just kind of meh, and the spaetzle and gravy was actually a bit of a let-down. In the past it's been good, but this time the spaetzle was bland and doughy, almost like they were out of eggs and nutmeg and just boiled up a plain dough in water. They weren't fried, either, so they just had a lumpy blahness that wasn't helped at all by the gravy, which was also lumpy. The coleslaw was good - at the Kaiserhoff it's finely shredded white cabbage in a vinegar and sugar sauce. Add lots of black pepper at the table and it's quite delicious! My husband and I have been going to the Kaiserhoff since the late 90s, and in that time not a lot has changed, which is just how we like it. The one area that could use a full update (not just a coat of ugly paint) would be the restrooms. Years ago they were vintage-cool, with killer wallpaper, but sometime over the years the wallpaper has disappeared, and now all you notice is that they are kind of stinky. A full refresh of the loos would be a massive improvement. As for the rest of the interior, we think it's perfect just the way it is! read more

I wondered if I should ask them if the kitchen is Ready to prepare the meal from the full menu but I thought no, of course they would prepare the meal properly We had traveled about 120 miles and we're looking forward to a nice German meal we both ordered veal schnitzel. What a mistake. The spätzle had the congealed look of old oatmeal rather a large clump of it was put on the plate likewise the sauce have the consistency of really thick wallpaper paste I only wish I was not kidding You would think of course perhaps a red cabbage would be good wrong again Way over cooked and watery Yet it did have a nice flavor. My husband and I visited your restaurant just yesterday actually. We are an older couple, about 70, and we were seated in the bar area. The bar was full of very, very loud people who were quite inebriated. The volume of noise was so loud my husband and I had to shout to each other across the table to be heard. It's not like the dining room was empty they had plenty of tables in there but they chose just seat us in the very loud drunk bar. Our food was disappointing to say the least. I had Jager schnitzel that was overcooked and hard on the edges. My husband schnitzel was also overcooked. We are also quite disappointed that a German restaurant would not have authentic German beer. We are very disappointed in our experience at your restaurant as this was a very important dinner date for us and we experienced less than satisfactory food and noise so loud that when I left I had a migraine. We came from out of town and unfortunately we don't get away very often and we probably won't be coming back to your restaurant because of our experience. read more

My favorites were the red cabbage and the ribs. I could have sat thier all day and stuffed myself on them. Thier barbeque is not a traditional barbeque sauce but still out of this world. Met extended family here for an early lunch. I ordered the Reuben sandwich. It did not have much taste to it. I have had better. Daughter ordered the Clubhouse Sandwich with bacon. She said it was tasty. Both our orders included fries. The fries were good. Waitress was attentive to our table at first, but as the restaurant became busier, she quit checking on our table. Ambiance was heavy as expected with an older eating establishment. Also, very noisy as we had other large groups near our table. Conversation was difficult as we had to almost yell at one another at one point. Growing up with a grandmother who immigrated from Germany, food here paled in comparison to what she would prepare for our family. Overall, we were not that impressed and will most likely not return. What can I say. 5 stars for the friendly and attentive staff, and especially for the food. I am German and this experience was just amazing. I'm craving good German food ever since I moved to Minnesota but every single German place I went to was a big disappointment. Not Kaiserhoff. This is authentic German home cooking. I had the German sampler and I felt like I'm home at my parent's and my mom was cooking. The brat - mysteriously they call it Landjaeger which is actually a beefstick and what they call Bratwurst is a beer brat that doesn't exist in Germany;) - sauerkraut, potatoe salad, everything was so tasty. Ok, the ribs are not a German thing either but were delicious too. One last word: Every German place I go to has German chocolate cake. Never heard of this before :) read more

Love this place! Got German sampler first visit, landjaeger today. Kraut and potato salad very tasty. Pleasant, attentive service. Very clean and welcoming throughout. The murals are great fun and give the feel of being in the old country. read more
