I was in town visiting some family, and apparently this is The place to go to for a nice dinner. We drove to downtown New Ulm, checked out the evening cuckoo clock show, and got seated right at reservation time. They served 1919 Root Beer, which was all I needed, so while I downed about three mugs of that, I had my meal. The main thing I got was the.. Kaiserhoff German Sampler (Kaiserhoff Ribs, Landjaeger, Bratwurst, red cabbage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and bread). Dear lord, these ribs. Fall off the bone, and surrounded in some sort of sauce-based crust that had some amazing crunch around those moist, succulent ribs. The two sausages were also good. If you like sausages, you'll get a kick out of these two very different flavors and textures. Good stuff. And the potato salad, very different from anything I've ever had before, ooey and gooey, no texture really, but acidic, which was nice compared to the meaty ribs and sausages. I also got to try the Wiener Schnitzel (Breaded veal complimented with red cabbage) (Served with spaetzles with gravy and coleslaw). Oooh I loved this. Breaded perfectly, very crunchy. Cooked perfectly, not dry at all. And spaetzle is like my favorite side dish. Slathered with grazy, like schnitzel and dumplings. What a meal. Overall, this was a lovely meal in a lovely little town. I would come back and hope I do one day.

I do not get the bad reviews of Kaiserhoff, we really liked our dinner here! This restaurant is totally old school; we were in town from the Cities for Shell's Oktoberfest, and we all wanted German food for dinner afterwards. Despite being super busy, we got in pretty quickly. Service was a tad bit slow, but that was to be expected because of how packed the restaurant was. The food was pretty dang good! I got a jaeger schnitzel and my wife got the ribs. The schnitzel was tasty (but could have used a bit more sauce) and the ribs were TO DIE FOR amazing, I would definitely get them next time. The German soup was also really good. Our daughter had a side of spaetzle, which she really liked. Kaiserhoff is definitely family-friendly and accomodating of children, and the inside is very old-world cozy. We love it here and will definitely be back. There is one negative thing I do have to report: the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. It looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks and needed almost a complete remodel to bring it up to standard. I was shocked by this as the rest of the restaurant is so pleasant. All in all, aside from the bathroom, a must visit in New Ulm!

We decided to take a quick day trip and head to New Ulm for some German food and beer. This place was recommended as a must stop for their German fare so we decided to stop in while on the main drag. This place definately gives off 1970's supper club vibes. Not much has changed since then but that is not always a bad thing. It all depends if the food is good. We decided to try a few different things and ordered the German Sampler and Schnitzel al a Holstein. I have to tell you, this was some great Midwest German food. The suggestions were spot on. The red cabbage and sauerkraut were both great and they went well with all of the meats and sausages that we ordered. Their ribs, which they are famous for, were tender and fall off the bone moist. The BBQ sauce that was served with them was something entirely different and unique which amplified the experience. Even the addition of breadsticks and salad with homemade dressing brought home the supper club feel. We left stuffed and satisfied. My only gripe about this place was that the staff had a real "chicken with its head cut off" vibe. Lots of running around aimessly. Our table was forgotten after we were seated and we had to flag a waitress down to get service after waiting over 15 minutes. Easy mistake and the food was good so it was forgivable. Definitely worth a stop in.

I was here before under other ownership and wasn't impressed. But the new owners have definitely improved this restaurant. We love stopping here on a day trip. Good German food. The German potato salad is delicious and so is the red cabbage. The bratwurst is great.

We were drawn in by the exterior & the promise of the best German food in [a very German] town. This place hasn't been updated any time recently, & that's not a complaint, it's a compliment. The barkeep greeted us on entry & we liked her right off the bat. There was also an energetic server buzzing around, cheerfully & frequently addressing her tables, greeting regulars & introducing herself to visitors. Unfortunately, we didn't have her. Our server was working the main dining room & her only table in the bar area was ours. She wasn't neglectful & went through the motions. Still, I found myself envious of the other guests, which were being given tips [ie: that syrup carafe is actually our famous rib sauce, which goes great on our also famous kraut balls!], while we got "everything still ok?" Ok sums it up well. While they had fabulously tangy red cabbage & a lovely kraut soup, the rest was just ok. The kraut was mild & I'm gonna expect at least 3 varieties of mustard to choose from for sausage. The price wasn't horrible but is wasn't a great deal either. I've had better for less. In anerage was an average experience - 3 stars

As I walked to the back of the restaurant and sat at the bar, I noticed the beautiful outside patio. With a waterfall feature, I noticed there was a group of older folks there and found out it was their monthly German club! The ambiance is definitely German. Lots of deep oak woodwork, a beautiful bar with gorgeous stain glass windows at the back of the bar by the register. The lights glistened off of the giant hanging glass pitchers and beer steins. The bartender and waitress that both helped me were dolls. Had great suggestions on the menu, attentive, and talkative. I started with a potato pancake. It was delicious. Served with sour cream and applesauce like God intended. It was 5.50 for 1. Initially I thought that was pricey BUT it was worth it and I'd shell out the $9 for 3 next time. Then I had the sausage sampler. It came with two pieces of warm rye bread (tasted homemade), 3 different sausage links; chicken curry, bratwurst, and polish kielbasa...made in house. Lastly a small scoop of warm German potato salad. It was all good! I'll be back. No ranch used here so no rating.

Very authentic interior design; the bar area looked like many of the pubs we'd recently been to in German and Austria. The bartender came over quickly and got my glass of halbtrocken (half-sweet) Riesling. If you're only familiar with the American-style syrup they market as Riesling, you need to check out some German wines. "Trocken" is dry, "halbtrocken" is half-sweet, "FineHerb" (a relatively new designation) means off-dry and "süß" or suss, is sweet. On to the potato pancake appetizer. It arrived quickly, nice and hot, and served with both applesauce and sour cream. However, it wasn't the coarsely shredded potatoes I am used to getting in Germany; more of a fine shred, which gave it a different mouth-feel. From there, on to the beef rouladen. It takes a little longer but also came out hot, with sides of red cabbage, a roll, and a ton of spaetzle. Tasty, though the gravy was a little saltier than I'd have preferred. And if I'd eaten all that starch, I'd still be sleeping it off in one of their booths. Their menu also includes sausage samplers and other traditional items. Why only a three? Service and food were both good but not great. I thought the food was a little pricey: $26 for ONE rouladen with sides, and $6 for a single potato pancake. Three-and-a-half stars would be more fair but Yelp! doesn't give half stars. Finally (and I'm not really deducting points for this), no one on the staff that I encountered spoke ANY German. Even my basic, "Guten tag!" when sidling up to the bar was met with a blank stare. So... authentic? The atmosphere: definitely. The food: mostly. Final verdict: OK, leaning toward good.

We were the only ones there at 4 on a weekday and it took 30 minutes to get our first drinks. We grabbed a pretzel and Mediterranean plate for the table. The pretzel was solid. Huge, warm, and really soft but definitely not Bavarian style if that's what you're after. More the kind you get at New Bohemia with less crust or chew. The Mediterranean platter was pretty disappointing for $14 but that's on me. What did I expect from a German sausage bar? Beckett's in uptown and Meteor Bar in Northeast are great examples of bars, both with food, that consistently go later no matter what. granted they are both in Minneapolis, so different customer base. come here, support this local establishment! they are good, just not great though they could be!! p.s. yes i am writing this from the bar, and just an update: my bill confirmed their happy hour is NOT running tonight. :/ granted the bartender never said there was happy hour and those menus weren't out, so i suspected as much. but i came for the happy hour, including food, and got neither. first world problems for sure!
