Booked a lesson for my kids and paid for the video package. After the lesson the instructor told me that the clips for the camera on both boards were broken and I should ask for a refund because that shouldn't have happened. I contacted the company and received no response. So I paid for the video package and got maybe 3 short clips of my son, none of my daughter and a few pictures. The instructor was just fine but I probably would not use this company again. Also, maybe it's the case with all surf lesson places, but the boards looked very worn and fairly crappy. read more

I cannot say enough about Paulo, he was phenomenal! My husband loves to surf, I am afraid of waves, so Paulo had his work cut out for him trying to teach me to surf........he did it!!! I caught and stood up in at least 7 waves with him after a few falls, he remained calm and gave clear instructions. I highly recommend anyone looking to take lessons book with Paulo. My daughters and I were out with our boards this morning. We accidentally steered our board incorrectly. Immediately, Mike with Kahu Surf School started yelling and telling us to learn how to learn how to surf and yelled "go home!" My girls both started crying and freaked out. He kept yelling at us and turning around and saying - go home! My daughters both didn't want to surf any more and got so scared that a grown man was yelling at us. I said sorry to him over 4 times, but he wouldn't stop. I would never entrust children with Mike. I will be checking to see if he even has a license to teach surfing. read more

My partner and I had a surf lesson with Paulo during our recent trip to Hawaii. He was effective in getting us to ride the waves by the end of the hour, but he was quite rude. He was yelling at us for small things, and he seemed quite impatient overall. He didn't show any sympathy for me when I fell and scraped my hand. Had one last day and our turtle excursion got cancelled so I scheduled a a private lesson with Paulo! I will say I am in my 50's so I knew it would be tough to say the least! But he was so patient and had very simple 3 step instructions to get you up! After a couple of wipeouts I finally got my footing and boy was it fun! I will definitely feel it in the morning lol. I had set up a lesson for my friend and a few minutes prior to the lesson I received a very professional call from the instructor Kyle to confirm we knew where to find him. Kyle did an outstanding job going over the many things to understand regarding the safety while out in the ocean and finished off with a detailed land demo. Ka'āina was absolutely AMAZING with my daughter! We are from St. Louis, MO USA... she's 12yrs old and had never even thought about surfing. After about 7mins of instruction on the beach, they were off! She got up on her very first wave! It was so much fun to watch. We booked a 2nd lesson for her, spur of the moment, because she was absolutely hooked! The waters looked calm at first, but Ka'āina was able to get her in the right spot to catch a few great waves on our last day here. We met Paulo on Waikiki beach this morning and he asked if we wanted to learn to surf. I said we had to leave in one hour and he said we could get started right away. My wife and I had taken lessons before on Maui, but weren't able to get up. My kids had never surfed. Paulo got us going fast. After some instructions on the beach we were in the water. One of my kids got up right away, the other two were up soon after. Even I got up. He kept close watch on us and made sure we avoided hazards. Really nice guy too, recommend giving him a call for surfing lessons. read more

This was our first time surfing, and we couldn't have had a better instructor. Ka'aina was TREMENDOUS!!!! He was knowledgeable, patient and encouraging. He had all 3 of us up on our boards in no time. He also didn't spend a ton of time on the land and got us in the water as quick as possible. My only complaint was the amount of people in the water who didn't seem to think that they should move out the way, but that's just Waikiki! I was apprehensive, but Paulo and his son (also Paulo) made this so fun and both of us were up on our boards numerous times during our one-hour lesson. I don't understand what others are talking about. I don't think "criticizing" is right word to describe Paulos approach. This was my first time surfing and I was throwing my arms around because thats what I do when I'm unbalanced and I kept falling. Paulo let me know what my mistakes were and by my 3rd run I was riding waves almost back to shore! I never felt pressured by Paulo to commit and rested as needed. My girlfriend took lessons with us at the same time and she has nothing but good remarks as well. We would definitely surf Paulo again! 10/10. :) read more

Most disappointing experience in Hawaii. The instructor couldn't wait to end our lesson, which was only a little over half of the time we paid for. The location they picked for the lesson was the most crowded beach on Oahu, which means you get bumped into by others all the time. It is very easy to get hurt because the water is shallow and the ocean bottom is full of sharp rocks. read more

I wish I could say it was a good experience, but unfortunately my husband and daughter felt like the instructor was very rough in his approach. My daughter and husband are super beginners and were very nervous, not naturals AT ALL. He seemed to get frustrated very quickly with my husband and made comments in front of my daughter. When my husband tried to bring the surf board back on shore, he thought my husband was stealing it. Why on earth would my husband steal his board when my daughter was still out in the water and my son and I were standing right there? That was extremely uncomfortable. I'm only giving 3 stars because my daughter had fun and caught her first waves. I really wish I could give higher review, but that was so humiliating and inappropriate. read more

We wanted to find a great instructor for our teenage daughter. We wanted someone fun, safe, and knowledgeable and did we ever find what we wanted in Paulo. He is a fantastic instructor, in that he shows his student what to do but then makes sure the student is doing it right before they even hit the water. He gives constant feedback to the student throughout the whole lesson. Our daughter had the time of her life and can't wait to go surfing with Paulo again in the summer. I would give them zero stars if possible. Paulo called us the morning of our surf lesson for my son (1 hour prior; we were in the car leaving) canceling due to "the instructor is injured". They instantly refunded our money with out asking us how we wanted to proceed. I then made Paulo aware that we booked this a month ago and that my son was REALLY looking forward to this lesson; is there any way we can reschedule for later during out stay? His response was, "people book these lessons months in advance, we can't just give you a lesson." We were totally aware of that since that is exactly WHAT WE HAD DONE. We were expecting Paulo to make it right. He them gave me the number of another person that I could text not call and "see if they have anything". This other person who said there was nothing that could be done; the money had already been refunded. After texting that they were terrible and ruined my son's vacation AND that I was going to light them up on Yelp, I was told to pick a time and they would get him in. We chose Tuesday 8/17/21 at 0900. We thought we were set. I texted on 8/16/2021 to make sure we were still on for the next day only to receive a curt text re: someone else's information and an oops that was for someone else. They confirmed we were good for a 8/17/2021 at 0900. My wife and I decided we were not comfortable w/ the way things were being run and didn't want to put my son in the water w/ this company after the disorganization we witnessed. Didn't matter, they texted, not called, and cancelled the next AM because the waves were too big at 4-6 feet. My Son had got a surfing lesson at rockpiles after the first cancellation on waves... wait for it, 4-6 ft w/ a very experienced recommended instructor. Bottom Line: unprofessional, they do not practice their business in good faith of the customer. Do NOT use Kahu Surf School. You deserve better. read more

I had the pleasure of being in Hawaii last month and took a a one-on-one lesson with Paulo! It was worth every dime. Paulo was super patient with me while doing the dryland before we got in the water. I got up on 99% of the waves with him. He is extremely experienced and you can tell he knew exactly what he was doing. I would definitely recommend a private lesson. My daughter and I are beginners. The instructor was very inappropriate. He kept criticizing my surf form instead of properly guiding. I didn't understand why he was acting so demeaning towards me today. He said " Why are you so difficult to work with!? How hard is it to do this!?" I was so glad when I finished my last wave. He told me to swim to shore which I did. And as I landed to shore, I tried to return the board where we picked them up and then he started to yell "Hey! Get back to the water!" Multiple times. I shook my head and waved no. I was extremely overwhelmed with surfing by that moment. Afterwards, my daughter mentioned to me that he thought I was going to steal his surf board and was name calling me "deaf." I can't believe how much he humiliated me at the beach in front of my family. I'll never recommend anyone this program to learn how to surf. I highly recommend my previous surf learning experience, the Ohana Surf Project. They were very positive and professional. read more
