I wish we hadn't stopped at Restaurant Bar Familiar Kahlua. On the plus side, it's a central location on the main drag. There's peppy music (Heard Haddaway's "What is Love?" twice during our meal--remember that old Will Farrell movie "Night at the Roxbury"?) blaring and at least four disco balls to go with the black and white checked dance floor and mirrored pillars, plus plenty of flashing strands of colored lights.
Unfortunately, the festive atmosphere seems to be prioritized over flavor. The mango margarita was the worst drink out of the at least 30 that I've had in Mexico during this trip. It was a disaster from the start--the rim had apparently been dusted with flavored salt, but it the glass was so overflowing that the salt had mostly run down the sides of the glass and the server had to mop up the sides and bottom of the glass after he set it down. It had a horrible medicine taste. It was obviously a fake fruit flavoring, but it seemed to actually be artificial peach instead of artificial mango, even though they're probably both equally disgusting. My friend's caipirinha also missed the mark.
The menu seems extensive, like the twenty forms of coffee drinks advertised on a banner hanging on the wall. But the lime soup I ordered is probably the same thing as the tortilla and chicken soups listed on the menu. The table had a slope to it, so I tried to cut a soggy tortilla floating in the soup in half and got a lap full of hot liquid. Other than that, the soup was okay and had decent flavor with bell peppers, chicken, slices of lime and tortilla chunks.
The guacamole was passable. The fish tacos were considered all right by my fiend. Two flour tortillas instead of one encased good amounts of seafood but meh with the flavor.
We felt abandoned by our server and had to wait awhile to order, and waited even longer for our drinks, and yet again with a borderline ridiculous wait for our food, then an unfortunate game of trying to find him to ask for the check.
Save your time and money for one of the other options on the main strip--unless you're only getting beers and have plenty of time to waste, steer clear of Kahlua. read more
