i went to kafe tourrettes yesterday for breakfast and it just blew me away.
all the tables are outdoors and the owner vinnie has his griddle outside. he cooks a heap of potatoes, 2 eggs, 2 slices of super thick bacon and 3 mini pancakes. that's the breakfast. it's delicious and all that is only $5. coffee (which is delicious as well) is $1 and .50 a refill. we stood around chatting with vinnie as he made our food. he told me that he has a special outfit he likes to cook in so i naturally insisted he put it on. he comes back in a moment in this leather cowboy hat with a rhinestone hat band, a leather vest, jeans, a dog collar with a big chain hanging from it. vinnie is a delightful nut and oakland native. not only is his food amazing but his stories about oakland and san francisco from back in the 60's helps make going to kafe tourrettes truly a food adventure.
unfortunately, this establishments is one of oakland's underground venues. i was asked not to include his address as part of my review, though i can tell you it's in one of the live work spaces that includes art galleries and work space for large scale art.
places like kafe tourrettes is a big reason i moved to oakland and i truly hope you're fortunate enough to find your way there as i have. read more
