I had no idea this little gem was here! After a long day at work, I did not want to cook, so I started looking for nearby restaurants and found this place. The gyro platter immediately caught my eye, so I called in an order. They said 15 minutes, but it was already ready when I arrived 10 minutes later. I was actually the first person to order the gyro platter since they had just added it to the menu the day before, which was pretty cool. They even gave me a mango milkshake-type drink on the house, and it was absolutely delicious. The hospitality was amazing, and the food was even better. We've had a great experience every time we've visited Kabul Darbar. If you're looking for authentic Afghan food, this is the place to go. They recently added breakfast to the menu, and it's absolutely delicious--it tastes just like a homemade meal. I highly recommend the Breakfast Karahi and the shir chai. I was genuinely excited to come here and try Afghani food, but honestly the experience degraded so quickly and I was left feeling unwelcome and would not return. Overall, the food was tasty. Otherwise, the service and general dining experience was so poor it isn't worth coming back for the food. To start, we weren't served any water or drinks (outside of the one mango lassi we ordered). I think our server struggled to take our order (unclear if it was a language barrier or something else), as we corrected what we requested multiple times and still got the wrong meal. We were not told that one of our orders would take 40+ minutes to arrive, so we sat there as we watched all the other tables get their food/leave during our time. When I asked, they would repeat 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and eventually I requested that when the food is ready, to have it via takeout (twice!) and they refused to do that. They are capable of packing items as to go (they offer it), so we were pretty frustrated that they weren't respecting our ask. This one isn't their fault, but I could hear other tables laughing about our request to take out in another language, which further made it feel like we weren't welcome / othered in the space. Eventually when food arrived, as mentioned, one of our orders was completely wrong. Rather than send it back (and risk waiting even longer), we told them what had happened but that it's fine and we'll accept it, and they didn't seem to care at all that we were served the wrong food. To their credit, they comped the saffron rice (which we had to ask for, since the meal we actually ordered included saffron rice and what we got did not), but they didn't really acknowledge the fact that we received the wrong food after that very extended, uncomfortable wait. I did not expect anything free, but it would have been nice if they just say "hey, sorry for giving you the wrong food, thank you for understanding, we have comped the rice" etc instead of making it seem like we were causing problems. To be clear, throughout all of this, we did not make demands or cause a scene, we literally just asked twice "hey could we just get our food as take out" and "hey is this the XYZ we ordered? Oh we actually ordered something else, but its ok, we'll accept it." The music they played was also uncomfortably loud, my guest and I were shouting over the music to talk to each other while we waited. I think there was a special event or a birthday, but I do wish it wasn't kept at that loud volume for so long. Not sure if there is just a cultural mismatch here, which I'm open to. That being said, I felt very uncomfortable and unwelcomed and would not feel comfortable returning. read more

I was pretty excited to try this place once o convinced my husband about it. We did takeout. Mantu was delicious. We ordered the chicken kabobs and were surprised at how spicy it was. The chicken itself wasn't spicy and was good, but the side salad and yogurt sauce were too spicy. Both my husband and I enjoy spicy, but it was a bit much. Pretty sure there were serano chili peppers in it. I thought Afghan food wasn't supposed to be spicy like that. More than likely won't be a returning customer. read more

What a disappointment! We went there with lots of exciting to support a newly opened business. However, we were disappointed big time. They apparently were shooting a video. We waiting more than 35 mins for one single bolani. They kept brining lots of food out for the shoot and we were not served. I bet they were shooting the video for publicly and yet didn't care about in house customer. We left after 40 mins of wait. I do understand they are new but,,, the first thing we encountered entering was the cigarettes smoke. Then the person who was by the register was confused why we were there. Their biggest competitor , Kunduz Kebob is only 6 min away where we ended up going. They need to step up! We will never go there again read more

I ordered the kabul burger the other day....very disappointed....if this is your impression of food from our home country thats embarrassing honestly. Poor customer service as well. Long wait times. The kabul burger had hot dogs in it it wasn't even sausage and old lettuce a slice or 2 of eggs and soft cold fries inside all soggy. Just for that it was like $12. This business will not last as it's dishonest, lacks knowledge of Afghan food and is lazy. We went here for a recent Fatyah gathering. The things that stood out were the prepackaged lettuce that was used with ranch dressing on the side. It tasted old and gross. You can tell a lot about a business when it serves you old, prepackaged salad, especially at an Afghan gathering. Afghan salad, when done right, makes the whole meal come together. Then the kabuli barely had any meat and was super greasy. It was one of the most tasteless rice dishes I've had. The halwa was greasy and had WHOLE cardamom pieces in it that needed to be fished out?! It was idiotic. No one likes to bite into a whole cardamom piece. This same halwa was served in RAW tortilla dough a few hours earlier during the Jinaza! I also learned that they are very expensive for afghan gatherings ($45/person) and then omit dishes that they say they'll include (they charge full and do not make all the dishes you talked about). Bottom line: their food is not authentic, they are lazy and take shortcuts, and they are dishonest. If you do business with them, get everything in writing and expect disappointment. read more

The worst service I've experienced dining out in the past 20 years. We felt so unwelcome. We just wanted to support a local business by dining out, but it felt like they were doing us a huge favor. We had to wait for menus and water. The attitude of the server was absolutely the worst. Dude, if you don't like serving people, do something else with your life.
