Getting to this location is convenient because it's close to the freeway. The parking lot can get a little packed at times but It's not too bad. There's usually a line when you get there which is okay because it gives you a little time to think about what you're gonna order. The workers are really nice and helpful. I've never had a bad experience with their customer service. I've tried most of the food here and everything is really good but my absolute favorite items are sisig and Bicol express. They give you so much food and it's decently priced. I always order a few things because I can't make up my mind. I just share or save my leftovers for later. The amount of food that you get is great for the price you pay! It's dangerous with the bakery being right there and the boba place in the same building! Kababayan is a Tagalog (the official language of the Filipinos) term, meaning fellow countrymen. They have been serving the Paradise & Spring Valleys for a little over a decade now and if one yearns for Filipino food, this is the closest joint to go to. We come here a lot for their "Bikol express". This is a prevalent Pinoy dish which was commercialized in Manila (capital city of the Philippines) but originally prepared the Bicolano style. Bikol is a region part of the Philippines, which is the southern part of the Luzon island. Bikol express is made out of coconut milk, shrimp paste or stockfish, onion, pork, garlic and long green peppers. They are also good for their sisig; a Kapampangan (from the Pampanga province) dish made from parts of pig head and chicken liver, usually seasoned with calamansi, onions and chili peppers. The kalamay (sticky sweet delicacy) and banana turon (a.k.a. banana lumpia with caramel) are great as snacks or desserts. Chitterlings on the stick (made from the small intestines of a pig or chicken) are available as well to munch on. Kababayan is a convenient place for the nearby community to visit because of its proximity and delicious Pinoy foods. The crews are friendly and are very generous with their portions. This is my go to place for lumpia! It's about time I finally write a review for this place. I have tried their Shanghai style of lumpia long ago when a friend brought them to a beach bbq. They were so good, I was hooked! I had to know where she got them. She said the name... Or tried to, and I was so confused! She literally had to repeat the name several times where to this day, I still can't pronounce the name correctly. Sad huh? It really doesn't matter if I can say the name or not... as long as I know how to find this place, I'm good! I've tried their chicken adobo and pancit, it was not bad, but the reason why I keep coming here is the lumpia! I live no where near here and it's far from me. Neyo, my pups' vet is around the corner so I get my fix of lumpia at least twice a year! :) I do randomly make the trip just to get them! Start off by saying I am a big fan of traditional Filipino food.. With that said it's very unique looking and tasting & may not be appealing to "traditional" style eaters. If your not into trying new places then this place probably isn't for you. If like trying strange new food like myself then you will be just fine. Some of the dishes that I have come to really enjoy such as chicken adobo and lumpia with all its glory can be found here. The pancit while good was a little different than what I'm used to at most Filipino places but still I enjoyed it. Filipino sausages are pretty amazing, and definitely recommend them here. I most certainly will be back from time to time to enjoy this high calorie high fat style of food. The place itself is in a small strip mall and is very popular with the Filipino community. I recommend ordering to go as the place is set up similarly to a Chinese fast food place with all the dishes to choose from right in front of you. Couple of times I've been there I noticed that they do not have sinigang baboy (favorite) but they have sinigang with chicken. :( The sisig and pancit is good and if you want shanghai lumpia minimum order is 25 pieces and it will be hot and fresh. I was told that the sisig was really good and I will agree with that statement. Even my non Filipino co workers loved it. Food was decent ordered pancit, chicken adobo and longanisa sausage. Pancit was cooked well had a faint flavor but squeezed lemon over and was so much better. Chicken adobo wasn't that good most of it was neck bone which had hardly any meat which was basically a waste of money. The best thing was the longanisa sausage!! This family owned bakery has kept the tradition of Filipino food alive with this bakery/ Resturant. It's definitely a far cry from the heavily populated Filipino community in national city, but they can hold there own with their sweet deserts and their standard Filipino main dishes. This place has perfected the art of cooking pork as well as beef for dishes like: Kare Kare, lechon Kawali, and beef stew. Those happen to also be the dishes my wife and I ate (our first time here) so it was only right to share that experience. Although this location is very convenient being right off the freeway it wasn't convenient though that we had to wait so long that we needed to flag someone down just to get our order in. It was also very odd and confusing that on the main menu where all the food options where, There was no prices available. Like they purposely left them off. So you seemingly had to wait for you're order to see what the price are. That's if someone didn't already give you attitude just for asking how much things were. So Once we got our food it was more than enough to satisfy my wife and I, including having leftovers. We got our two item combination meal with a side of lechon each for about $16. Not a bad price for all that food. Although, the meals had way to much salt in it, I still enjoyed it. Even though I had to pay for water, because the amount of sodium in the food left my mouth dry. But It still was a good meal. But ultimately the food is the only reason why you will come here so everything else can be ignored. Granted the only thing I have ever had here is the Shanghai lumpia it gets 5 stars from me! My coworker lives by here and at least 1x per month picks up lumpia for us all to share. A 50 piece order goes by in a flash so we have a lumpia fund people chip into to increase the piece count. I love that they are flexible on how quickly you can order. I called the day before mother's day to request a 100 piece order of lumpia and it was ready on time. The lumpia is best hot, but if it does go cold it is not super greasy and doesn't get limp. Delicious. Period. I got the one item plate with Pork adobo and pancit (noodles) and man, it was enough to feed myself and my boyfriend. Pork was tender and had various sections (fatty/lean). We also were able to try the steamed pork buns, which were also very tasty and unique. The shop atmosphere allows people to walk through the food counter and select from freshly cooked and pre-prepared entrees, buns, and desserts. I've been coming to this place for over 6 years and am never disappointed by the quality of their food or the service! I always order turon, pancit, and the 25 lumpia. They always say the lumpia will take 5-10 minutes to cook, but it often takes less :) The food's always nice and hot, and the woman behind the counter always leaves the top of the lumpia box open so they don't get soggy. Solid filipino food, all the basics, pancit, lechon kawali(fried pork) adobong pusit(calamari adobo flavored), igado(menudo with liver), filipino style menudo and dinuguan (pork w/secret sauce heehee). As others said, they have the fried dilis(anchovies), fried chicken skins, and chicharon bulaklak (fried pork intestines). My faves is the dinuguan and all there fried stuff. Keep in mind after eating here you might want to buy a bottle of fish oil, but the food is all good in this hood! Peeps need to also recognize, they just opened a halo halo (literally meaning, mix-mix, which usually consists with shaved ice, flan, ice cream, jello etc together with evaporated milk) corner. It is a very common filipino food that hits the spot for a sugar crave. They also got Taiwanese shaved ice that is sooooo delicious. Worth the visit itself and the only place I know that serves Taiwanese shaved ice in southeast san diego.
