Hmmm...Kabab King Diner. I've eaten here more times than I'd like to remember, and we've had them cater all the weddings and other special occasions for our family. This is authentic Pakistani food, but it's too greasy/bland for my liking (and as a Pakistani, that should mean a lot). They're just famous...their food isn't all that great but now they have a reputation so people flock here from all over because of that. If they sold hot water by the cup, people would be lining up to buy it just because it's Kabab King that's selling it. It should be known to all that eating in will mean interacting with rude, disrespectful waiters and poor service...please don't expect any better here. And if you order out, you'll likely be ogled by the pervy guys working behind the counter if you happen to be female. But hey, I guess it's part of the experience! Most importantly, nearly every single time that I've eaten their food, I've gotten sick shortly afterwards (other ppl that ate the same thing also had the same complaint). I've eaten here a couple times but the last time I went was just bad. The meats were dry and fell flat of real flavor, the samosa was mediocre and the mango lassi was the only thing I liked. Dinner : had chicken kabab , lamb chops , vegetable fried rice and Manchurian chicken .. Chicken kabab was pretty , the lamb chops were amazing one of the best I had ! But the Chinese part of the menu wasn't good at all !!! The waiter messed up our order waited one hour for our food !!! :( he should have let us know that he messed it the second half then we would have cancelled the second part ! It might be a muslim establishment but boy do they know how to feed a drunken lot. I know a drunken lot aren't usually the best source for good food (anything will do lot) but KK does a bang up job at keeping their food authentic and bomb flavorful. Don't believe me ask all the non drunken South Asian families tucking into their Biryanis (Rice Pilaf), Kababs, Haleems (Ground pulses w/ Meats) and Shoras (gravies). Their Naan is bomb .. soft on the outside and steamy when you tear it open. The kebabs have the right meat to fat ratio, just like a good burger needs the fat to keep the meat from drying up while being grilled on high heat, the same applies for Kebabs and Kebab Kings Kebab's are juicy and moist all the way through. Try the Bihari Kebab which is marinated in raw papaya (one of the best meat tenderizers because of the fruits natural ability to break down meat, if left for long it could turn brisket into pate) and coated with a mixture of spices and caramelized onions. Massaged onto a skewer and kissed by hot coals to give it that lovely char. The Haleem (think of it as an Indian Chilli) isn't as much an acquired taste as an acquired consistency. Since it is a slow cooked dish which mixes pulses, spices and meats till a point where everything blends into one uniform paste.. what you're eating to some could come across as porridge at best or snot at worst. That said I personally love it, not so much for its consistency but for it's transportive taste. It's salty, meaty and fatty and when you throw on the Barista Garnish (Julienned Ginger, Crispy fried onion) along with a healthy squeeze of lime you have this tangy, salty, moist, meaty porridge that sticks to the fresh naan and just sends you back to a Bombay Bazaar. read more

Alright guys. Let's just get this over with. What is Kabab King? Probably one of the longest running eateries serving South Asian/Indian/Desi/brownpeople food in Jackson Heights. What do they serve? Kababs. Okay they serve more stuff, like actual rice dishes, all sorts of curries, different meats. But apparently you're here for the kababs + 2 naan. Should I sit in? Probably not. If you're not brown, it might take a little long for people to serve you, unfortunately. It ain't right, but it is how things work. If you have a brown friend alongside you, I still wouldn't sit in and eat, for sanitary reasons. If you are brown, I mean you could sit in and pretend it feels like India/Pakistan/Bangladesh but you're probably better off eating in your car/at home. What's upstairs? It's a relatively new (well new for me anyways) seating area. Supposedly they do catering up there. Just don't bother. Should I even eat food from here? I personally don't think its a big deal healthwise, considering how places I've ate at overseas have less health and safety requirements, and I did pretty well there. I visited Kabab King after 10 long years. The reason for my absence was travels far and away from this truly magnificent purveyor of grilled meat. Still upon my return I will testify that they still are amongst the best Pakistani restaurants in the United States. Their Samosas were delicious, the Patties (puff pastry filled with minced meat) were spectacular, the Bihari kabab was tender, flavorfully marinated and succulent. For those willing to try something uniquely Pakistani I recommend the Chicken Chargah (marinated chicken slow roasted on a rotisserie). I even tried their tandoori fish which was tasty though in my books fish doesn't qualify as real meat. To complement all this meat you have to have the nan which was truly excellent. To top off a meal like this have the Kheer (rice pudding) and a cup of tea. Good old fashioned Pakistani and Indian food 24 hours a day and 7 days a week in the heart of the New York Indian community of Jackson heights. This place only warants a late night trip if you have a car and are working on a hangover, or if the friend you are staying with in NYC lives nearby (my case). Being that I was culinarily ignorant and had no idea what to order, I went up to the counter and asked for recommendations. The guy there happily suggested we head upstairs to the $7.99 buffet which had a wide selection of foods to try, and we obliged. We arrived a little early for the lunch rush and the buffet/dining room was almost completely empty, but they really do go for the King theme - the room was large and open, packed tightly with ornate tables and chairs. It was like we each had our own mini throne! I tried a little of just bout everything, filling my plate with small spoonfulls (spoons full?) of various meats and sauces. The only problem with this course of action was that I still don't know what I ate, because nothing was labeled. I can say that the naan was good. Tried this place on a early Saturday morning cause they were the only place open. Had halwa puri with chana and aloo, chicken biryani and chai. The chai was the only good part. Nothing special about the nan either-very bland-not the rich taste expected of a nan The place is chaotic. Very chaotic. People everywhere, yelling, screaming, no real sense of order. Which may be the case in Bombay or Karachi but seems a bit out of place in NYC. Going through many other Indian joints in Jackson Heights there is a sense of order regardless of how dingy or crowded the place is. People also constantly cutting in front-as they do in Bombay. So this certainly provides a more authentic experience-although frustrating. The tea is damn good. Hot, milky, and apparently complimentary. It is enough to come in for just the tea. The pricing structure is somewhat of an anomoly-prices listed on the menu-but when my order was totaled it came to a different amount. I think the prices listed on the menu are more of a 'rough guideline' than something adhered to. While KK is ok-there is certainly better out there in Jackson Heights. Go for Merit Kebab. I don't understand the raving reviews. Yes, it's cheap but as far as taste, it was okay. I've had better Pakistani food elsewhere, but of course I'm not Indian nor Bengali or Pakistani so I'm only speaking to my own taste preference. We ordered goat curry , tandoori fish , chicken korma and some laccha paratha and for drink mango lassi and coke. Kabab king is definitely OVERRATED, but it serves its purpose, and very cheaply at that. I have eaten here many times. I suggest sticking with kababs and bbq dishes, rather than going for the salaans/shorba dishes (curries). The bihari kabab is particularly well done, while the seekh and chapli kababs are good standards. The naan is usually served nice and hot. Every time we get our check, we are always surprised at how cheap the meal was. Service is typical desi style-- you need to be assertive and sometimes even go aggro on the waitstaff to get what you want. The cleanliness is questionable. The lighting makes you worry that load-shedding may occur at any moment. But that's all part of the "authentic" experience. If the food here were a little better, if they served pakola, and if there were a few stray cats running around the joint, you would really think you were in Pakistan. I do recommend this place, but mainly to take out of town visitors who have been indoctrinated with the "king, king, kabab king!" jingle, or maybe non-desi friends who would like to try out the desi food scene. A restaurant with authentic Pakistan food. Like what Jando S said, the cleanliness of the restaurant is questionable, mainly because the atmosphere is old (tables, chairs, walls, floors, etc). Don't expect to walk into a modern good looking place. If you can look past that, this restaurant isn't a bad place for some good food. I was here on a Friday around lunch time. They have a lot of business. When you first walk in, there's a counter for take out. You also have the option to dine in. My family ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan bread and a Chicken with spinach dish (sorry, forgot the name of it). The Chicken Tikka Masala and the spinach dish was very spicy; a little too overwhelming actually (I have a decent tolerance for spicy food, yet still felt overwhelmed). Both are very delicious and flavorful. The bowls they come in may look quite small, but they're quite generous with meat. Well worth the money. It was worth a visit.
