All aboard the cheese train!
If you're in Amsterdam and you love cheese, run, don't walk to Kaasbar. It's a cheese lover's dream! I'm so grateful that I was able to visit on my trip (thank you Daisy and Helene for putting Kaasbar on my radar).
I had dinner at Kaasbar after visiting the Heineken Brewery (it's a block away). I made a reservation in advance which is recommended. I don't recall how many seats are at the bar, but if I had to guess, I would say 15-20 max. If you want to partake in the cheese train, be sure to reserve bar seating.
I don't remember my server's name, but she was nice. She was from Oklahoma which was a pleasant surprise!
I had Pinot Grigio Rosé which paired nicely with the cheese. They do have a full bar if you prefer a beer or cocktail.
The cheeses are numbered and they are listed from mild to strong. If you don't see a cheese that you want to try on the train, you can request it from the server. You will receive a plate of crackers to eat with your cheese.
I tried three cheeses: Remeker Ryp (19), Farmers' Forgotten Cheese (23), and Beer Cheese (16). I liked the Remeker and Beer Cheese, however I did not care for the Farmers'. I don't know how often the menu changes, but I dined in May 2024 and the menu has already been updated (July 2024).
I was dining solo so I wasn't able to sample as much cheese as I would have liked. The cheese slices are very filling. I was full after eating two slices. Each slice of cheese is around €8-8,50.
In addition to the cheese train, they have fondue (Sunday to Thursday) and charcuterie boards so there are lots of options!
