There are cheese, shops everywhere, and they are all begging for you to step inside of their doors and enjoy a variety of locally made cheese. The Amsterdam cheese company is one of my favorite cheese shops. The staff is super helpful and they will go out of their way without being pushy, to help you with your cheese selection. Let me just put this out there right now... You will want all of the cheese. Every sample we had was delicious. If I could have purchased the entire shop, I absolutely would have. So instead of purchasing the entire shop I definitely purchased enough to keep us all happy for a while. The garlic cheese, the spicy cheese, the aged cheese,... The list goes on and on, and you will literally need to pull yourself out of the shop to go explore the rest of the area. This is a chain and they are everywhere in the central area. There are other cheese shops here also. If you go over to the floating market area, you will run into at least half a dozen cheese shops. But we ended up here and were given samples to try. If there was a flavor you don't see for sampling, just ask and they will cut it up for you. We didn't have any issues passing customs as these were vacuum sealed. They also provided us with wax paper to wrap our cheeses once we open them. read more

I enjoyed stopping in here to look around and sample a few cheeses. There was little customer service as my assumption was that most people just came in for the free samples. We purchased a small gouda cheese to take back to our hotel and snack on it with some delicious bread from a nearby bakery. There were lots of cheeses to choose from as they were stacked from counter height to the ceiling. Well enough to spend an additional 15min having our cheese swabbed in airport security. Yes, I took back an entire tote bag filled with a variety of cheeses (13 kinds) & yes, I took it as carry-on luggage. Yes, you CAN do that, though you may want to allow extra time for additional screening, as a bag full of cheese looks suspicious on the scanner. (Let them know ahead of time, so they flag it as odd contents and things go more smoothly) Tasting cheeses are readily available and you can taste literally EVERYTHING before you buy. At first glance I thought, what a gimmicky store, definitely designed to trap tourists. After walking in and checking the place out, I was amazed. The quality of this cheese is superb. How would I know just by looking? That's where it got goooood; free samples of literally any cheese in there. Some samples were put out with pairing jellies, some on their own. If no samples were present, just ask the super friendly and helpful staff and they gladly will slice you a nice little piece! All prices are clearly posted and I think a great deal compared to what you'd pay in the states. The flavors and consistencies are just delectable. You're able to try a variety of flavours here (and in every other cheese store in Amsterdam) before buying. This place is akin to a lot of tourist trap brands, a store with a tight branding that sells a particular novelty food (jerky, jams, spreads) aimed primarily at tourists. It's an easy find, easy out, with a clean selection of decently tasting cheese. Though sometimes I wonder if the locals actually buy from these stores. I'd hazard a guess at not typically, since they probably know where all the really good stuffs hiding, yea? Regardless, I saw several of these just walking around Amsterdam, so they're easy for some quick souvenirs or something to nibble on. They offer a nice sampling of cheese of different ages. Staff sometimes gives tastings to tourists as well. They also sell a small range of mustard (honey, dijon, balsamic). Pros: Really clean and easy selection of cheese to take with you. Has samplings of cheese at varied maturities. (really awesome) Tourist friendly. Cons: Might be overpriced in comparison to some places with better options. Tourist friendly. If I had the time, it would have been fun to scope out the other cheese shops hiding in the nooks and crannies of Amsterdam, but I'd say ACC is a fun bet for quick and tasty cheese. read more

Amsterdam is a huge exporter of cheese; in fact, more than 50% of the world's Gouda is made here. So if you like cheese, walk into any of the cheese shops in town for tastings and possibly bringing home some goodies. We didn't plan well enough and bought ours at the start of our trip, which meant by the time we were to head home we weren't so sure about what we had anymore. (Yeah, we couldn't wait till we got home and had to open the package and eat some of it while we were traipsing around Europe.) This particular shop was right around the corner from our apartment. YES! For all my fellow cheese lovers out there, please check this place out. They offer tastings which I didn't do or inquire about but that's only because I was on a mission for some aged Gouda. If I didn't know what I wanted and was open to suggestions, I probably would've sought some help and done a tasting but my visit was pretty straight forward. By the way, if you've had imported aged Dutch Gouda, I can guarantee, it's still not as good as the 24 month aged Gouda you can get here. The smoked Gouda is also mouth watering and puts all other smoked cheeses to shame, full stop. For the size of the shop, their selection of cheeses was astonishing and the flavors were endless. It's also a great place to get gifts for your loved ones, just be careful of the weight of your suitcase cause cheese can get heavy. read more

So the cheese ohhh the cheese it's amazing pesto cheese sun dried tomato cheese and the dipping sauces I love how you're allowed to pair the cheese's and jelly's and mustards and sample them before you purchase ... You had me at wheels of wall-to-wall cheese as I gazed with bright eyes and a rumbly stomach from the window. This place is exactly what you expect from a cute little cheese shop in the Netherlands. Nestled in a bustling area in the heart of Amsterdam, if you're out enjoying the night, drinking, or taking in the beautiful canals, make an effort to stop here. I brought three wheels of cheese home and man, it wasn't enough! They have a nice selection of young goudas, old goudas, paprika goudas, pesto goudas, and more and more and more! My favorite was their aged gouda - slightly harder and with more 'tang' than the less-aged cheeses; I had many on my trip in the Netherlands and this one was right at the top. As an FYI, in case you're traveling and wondering, cheese IS okay to travel home to America with, as long as it's in wax or vacuum sealed, which theirs is. Here they have a decent selection, though a bit uniform, of Dutch cheese, and if you haven't tried Dutch cheese before, or feel a bit apprehensive about it, like me, then it's a reasonable place to start. Here you can try out many different variations with different maturity. That said, be aware, this is a tourist trap. A nice tourist trap with lots of samples, but still a very expensive one. Cheeses here are about at least double the price of similar cheese in other shops. Try one of the markets or Marqt instead. Here you'll get a better selection for less than half the price. read more

Dear Tourists, To think you will get a true dutch experience when you walk into a store that says "Amsterdam Cheese Company" is truly sad. There is nothing dutch about "Cheese", because cheese is called kaas in this country. You singlehandedly walked into a tourist trap. The cheese is ridiculously overpriced, and if you only ask the staff about their origin you will discover that not a single person that works there is actually dutch. Its all fake, and those beautiful round cheeses that lured you in? they're made from plastic. Really, just reach up and tap them. No one will stop you. No one will stop you from being an ignorant tourist, wasting your precious money and time on buying pre-vacuum-sealed-cheese (for flight purposes only). The saddest part is that there actually are real cheese stores, with real cheese, that rarely get visited by any of you. The saddest part is that you all think that you know what "dutch" is, but you don't. Tulips are turkish, wooden shoes... really wooden shoes? I don't know. If you happen to ever stumble across a dutch person in Amsterdam, which during tourist season is rare, just ask. Don't google, just ask us. Ask us how you can support small local businesses, instead of tourist traps, ask us where you can find real cheese, real people, real experience, and we'll be happy to help.
