Cali Pals Doodles and Service Dogs

This is a hard review to write because over the years I have grown to love Tricia. But I feel that…read morethis information may help another family. We have had three doodles from Cali Pals each with serious health issues. Our first dog Scout developed Juvenile Cellulitis as a puppy. This is a very, very painful disorder. I sat with Scout and cried with Scout as we nursed him back to health. And Scout would wail and whimper in pain. It was so hard, and I felt so helpless. My vet said that the disease came from the stud line. Tricia did not believe me until there was another litter from which a pup developed the same painful condition. To Tricia's defense, it is not a common disease. The illness is cited to create lasting personality changes as well. We had a difficult time with training after the illness. So, we hired Tricia to board and train Scout for two weeks. During this time, she was able to observe the behavior problems. And to Tricia's credit, she offered to replace Scout with a new puppy. Our second doodle, Shadow was amazing. All of the wonderful traits you read about with Cali Pals puppies. Just a lovely, lovely dog. So, it was especially heartbreaking with Shadow died before the age of two years because of congenital kidney failure. We cried and cried. And to Tricia's credit, she handled the situation with kindness and generosity. She gave us our third doodle, Coqui. Coqui, at two years, was diagnosed with epilepsy. This morning, I just held her for thirty minutes as she endured another seizure. This was about the twelfth seizure. I haven't been able to decide if we should start permanent, ongoing medications. But we probably will need to do so. Tricia hasn't responded to this latest situation. That's okay. We certainly do not want another Cali Pals dog. Is Tricia highly likable? Yes. Has she been responsive to our situations and heartbreaks? Yes. Are we an anomaly? I don't know. I thought it is time to go public with our story today with the desire to prevent other families from this type of heartache not to mention veterinarian expenses.

It all started with Prince who came to me as a started puppy from Cali Pals, he is now 4 years old, he is the best dog ever working with Alzheimer's and hospice patients. From getting Prince I recommended Cali Pals to many family, friends, colleagues and friends of friends who many actually got their puppies from Tricia at Cali Pals as well. Everyone has had the same experience as me and I continually get updates on how thankful they are I put them in touch with Tricia, the breeder. We now have a 1 1/2 year old boy Dodge and my Mum has a one year old Libby, all different personalities but all very healthy and with great dispositions, we live them all. I cannot say enough about the Breeder of Cali Pals Tricia, she is always very responsive, professional, answers questions very promptly and cares deeply about all the placements of her puppies. My Furry Best Friends have made such an impact on the lives of so many people and I know my boy Prince can reach the Alzheimer's patients where sometimes human contact cannot. If anyone ever has questions about Cali Pals breeding program as a consumer I am more than happy to give you my experience, and I might add, I have very high standards. Professionalism, quality dogs and a compassionate breeder, well done Cali Pals you are without doubt one of the best breeding programs around. To Tricia a huge thank you for the difference you have made in the lives of many. Breeding I can only imagine is very rewarding but at times hard, with heartaches Im sure, but I know you always do what's in the best interest of the breeding dogs, puppies and the consumer, for that I am grateful for your utmost professionalism. Message me if you would like any additional info at tracymedicalmassage@gmail.com as my dogs speak for themselves, they are amazing.

I'm so sorry to have to share my experience with my community. Rhonna was incredibly rude and…read moreborderline racist to myself and my dog. It sounds like a lot of people love this place. But if you're an Asian woman with a fluffy dog I recommend either bringing a body guard or finding something else to do. People are probably too scared to write a negative review because this owner is frightening. I will never come anywhere close to here again. After I parked my car at the pool, I opened my door. Before taking my seatbelt off, 2 dogs under Rhonna's care came running at me full speed off leash. Not a big deal, I just shut the car door because she seemed to be mildly freaking out about this. She frantically yelled at them to come back & they did. I opened the window & asked if they were friendly. She replied "yes, but they still shouldn't do that." I said "no worries fine by me". The dogs running over didn't phase me, they were off leash & excited. Context: this is in the rural part of Hollister with gravel back roads. There was absolutely no signage about where dogs should or should not pee & you are outside at a public location for dogs. To reiterate: gravel road in a gravel parking lot in a yard in the rural country. There were no other clients in sight. Just 1 staff member w/ 2 other black dogs for a total of 4 black dogs. After Rhonna got her dogs under control, my dog was understdably excited because 2 dogs off leash having the time of their life just came running at us. My dog & I stepped out of the car, he pees on a steel pole in the parking lot. Rhonna yelled at me at the TOP of her lungs DO NOT LET YOUR DOG PEE ON THAT!!!!! I was like woah, okay, I don't know why you have to YELL AT ME, I didn't raise my voice & was super cool & chill about your dogs doing their thing so that clearly felt super aggressive. I said "I'm so sorry - is there a hose? Can I clean it?" She ignored me & walked to an outdoor sink fuming like a child and NOT a business owner. I followed her to help but she was still visibly super grumpy which seemed super dramatic for the context & situation. I mean maybe she was just having a horrible morning, but I just drove OVER an hour for an 85$ half hour lesson so it made me extremely uncomfortable to get yelled at first thing because of a dog's natural behavior when I was super chill about your dog. I have never seen anyone yell at a dog for peeing OUTSIDE. On a POLE. In a parking lot! I have seen dogs pee in pet stores & not get yelled at like this. Like dude we are outside. What happened did not warrant her behavior. I said "no really, I'm happy to clean it." She exclaimed "no! there is a pee area over there please go pee there only!l To reiterate to anyone reading this post, there were NO SIGNS DESIGNATING WHERE TO PEE & NOT PEE. There are only signs saying "clean up after your dog." She could have walked to my car & told me the rules or told me politely at LEAST. not sure if what happened next was crazier than what already transpired... Rhonna comes over & the first thing she says was the most discriminatory & rude first question I have ever heard. "WHAT makes you think your dog will even swim?" As if her yelling at me for my dog peeing outside in a parking lot wasn't enough. I am half Asian & my dog is a Eurasier. Like, come on, there are at least 55 other nicer ways to initiate a conversation about whether this is the right fit for my pet. I said, "excuse me?" she said, "well THAT breed of dog doesn't like to swim." I said, "oh! you know this breed of dog?" She clearly had no idea what breed of dog I had (Eurasier) which I know b/c she evaded the question and deflected and then told me point blank halfway through the lesson that she didn't know what kind of dog he was. She said "well what I mean is fluffy dogs like yours don't ever swim well". I said I was there because I wanted to be follow the rules & book a 1 on 1 class (not cheap by the way, 85$ for half hour) so that he can come when his friends privately book the pool. I told her I'm happy to leave if she didn't want us there & she said no no let's do this. She ended up being nice from this point forward but this was the rudest welcome I have ever experienced & it ruined the entire experience. My dog ended up jumping off of the ramp several times & swimming like a pro. She even admitted she was wrong about him more than once. But wow! I have never experienced anything like this in a setting where I am paying top dollar for services and traveling at length. Upon booking there needs to be a breed question if this is really SUCH an issue for her. Just be aware that the owner has a scary temper & don't let your dog pee in the parking lot. I have never written a negative review like this. I only rate with 4 and 5 stars. But sharing aggressive behavior like Rhonna's is the right thing to do so we can all make the best choices for our families. It's time for behavior like this to stop.

Our older corso had been trained by Primal owner, Mike, so he was the first person we called when it was clear our new dog was traumatized and completely untrained. He hooked us up with Jess and I couldn't be more grateful and impressed. Jess was as patient with me as with our new dog, Ty. I typically feel like an idiot trying to get the training techniques down but she was patient and helped me and Ty build confidence training together. After 8 private lessons, a dog who for 2 months would not come inside and would not let me put a leash on him is now going for walks, can sit, lay down, and stay in place on command. With Jess' guidance, I am now crate training him and prepping him to join group classes. I love her calm yet confident demeanor and will never not be amazed at her ability to get my giant feral pup to learn things fast. He's now well on his way to being a well-behaved, affectionate member of our family, and just getting started on his training journey. Thank you so much Primal Canine and Jess!

Central Coast: Off Leash K9 Training - Training

Central Coast: Off Leash K9 Training

A few months ago, we hired OffLeash K9 through their "Board and Train" program, for our Cane Corso…read morepuppy. At that time, he was around 7 months old. At the time I signed the training services agreement, there was zero mention of the use of an electronic training collar as part of the program. Additionally, it is not clearly described or disclosed on the OffLeash K9 website that they utilize these collars as a part of the training-- they use vague language to refer to their practices, including the use of "safe and effective methods", but no concrete examples or definitions. I did not discover that they were planning to use an electronic (shock) collar until well after I paid the $2790 for the training program, I should add. Learning this information gave me pause, and I considered cancelling the training, as I had learned through my own professional experience that positive reinforcement training is more effective to achieve results for dogs than punishment-based training. Nonetheless, I was told and encouraged by the trainer (Izzy) that this method was safe, and would not cause injury. Upon return to me after the 2 weeks, my puppy had injuries around his neck which the trainer referred to as "hot spots". The trainer informed me that it was simply due to "irritation" from the collar. The trainer stated at the time of return that our dog was "stubborn", and "slow to learn". Being a Registered Veterinary Technician, I took him home, and I shaved and cleaned the wounds around his neck, in order to better visualize the area. It was immediately clear that he had painful, necrotic pressure wounds around his neck (see photos). I administered first aid, and consulted a veterinarian colleague for further instruction. I am relieved to report that his injuries healed without the need for more invasive treatment--however, those pressure wounds are not a "normal" result of the use of electronic collars. That occurs when the collar is left in place for too long, and is fitted too tightly. This was a direct result of the misuse of the training collar by the trainer. Subsequently, our dog was fearful of the collar, and, understandably, would refuse to allow us to place it on him. He demonstrated very little obedience as a result of his training, despite our attempts to follow up with his training as directed, and he appeared more anxious than he was prior to the program. Both personally and professionally, I was left disappointed and concerned by this program, and certainly would not recommend it to any of my friends or associates. I question its validity, if management is using and supporting dubious communications, and condoning harmful practices. I have extensive connections in the veterinary medical community of the Central Coast and Bay Area, after an almost 20-year career as a senior veterinary nurse, and I have been vehemently opposing and advocating against this he use of OffLeash K9. I have dissuaded clients from acquiring their services. Furthermore, I strongly suggest that trainer Izzy of Salinas be investigated for misconduct, and potentially animal neglect. My intention in sharing this feedback is to make the community of pet owners, whom I love and humbly serve, aware of the adverse effects of this training program.
